This invention describes a reductive amination process whereby perfluorinated ketones or ketals are combined with &#x3b1;-aminoesters under basic conditions to form metal carboxylates. Diastereoselective reductions of the metal carboxylates enable access to two diastereomers, depending on the reducing conditions.
