A non-polymer thickening medium, and the inclusion of such a non-polymer thickening medium in a cleaning composition. In some embodiments, the non-polymer thickening medium includes a sparingly water soluble surfactant, and an organic solvent including an OH group, an ether group, or both an OH group and an ether group. At lease some of the two components of the thickening medium interact with each other thicken a composition to which they are added. In some embodiments, the thickening medium components are included within a cleaning composition which further includes a source of alkalinity, and a polar carrier. Some other embodiments relate to methods of making, and methods of using such thickening medium and cleaning compositions.

Non-polymer thickening agent and cleaning composition

Compositions of the invention include: (a) a solvent at least partially immiscible in water; and (b) a solubilizing agent having a formula:where R is (C&#x2013;C)alkyl, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkyl, (C&#x2013;C)alkoxy, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkoxy, (C&#x2013;C)alkenyl, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkenyl, aryl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl or heterocycly; and R' and R&#x2033; is independently selected from hydrogen, (C&#x2013;C)alkyl, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkyl, (C&#x2013;C)alkoxy, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkoxy, (C&#x2013;C)alkenyl, or substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkenyl. Further compositions include: (a) a solvent at least partially immiscible in water; and (b) a solubilizing agent having a formula:R&#x2014;R&#x2014;OHwhere R is (C&#x2013;C)alkyl, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkyl, (C&#x2013;C)alkoxy, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkoxy, (C&#x2013;C)alkenyl, substituted (C&#x2013;C)alkenyl, aryl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl or heterocycyl and Ris a nitrogen containing heterocycyl or a nitrogen containing hetroaryl. The compositions are useful in providing stable single phase aqueous solutions when combined with water.

Non-surfactant solubilizing agent

Compositions of the invention include: (a) a solvent having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value of 5 to 7; and (b) a solubilizing agent having the formula:where R is aryl, cycloaryl, heteroaryl or hetercyclyl; Ris a bond, (C-C)alkyl, substituted (C-C)alkyl, (C-C)alkoxy, substituted (C-C)alkoxy, (C-C)alkenyl or substituted (C-C)alkenyl; and Zis hydrogen, Na, K, NR'where R&#x2032; is defined herein. Further compositions include: (a) a solvent having a (HLB) value of 5 to 7; and (b) a solubilizing agent having the formula:where Ris a bond, (C-C)alkyl, substituted (C-C)alkyl, (C-C)alkoxy, substituted (C-C)alkoxy, (C-C)alkenyl or substituted (C-C)alkenyl; and Zis hydrogen, Na, K, NR&#x2032;where R&#x2032; is defined herein. The compositions are useful in providing stable single phase aqueous solutions when combined with water.

Methods include, providing a liquid composition having a first viscosity that includes a polymeric thickener, a non-aqueous solvent, and water. The non-aqueous solvent and water may form a theta solvent. A solvent with a second viscosity is provided. A portion of the liquid composition is diluted with the solvent forming a use solution with a third predetermined viscosity; where the third predetermined viscosity is greater than the second viscosity.

Rheology modifier concentrate

Methods of the invention include: (a) providing a solid composition that includes; a rheology modifier, a solidifying agent, and a surfactant; (b) providing a solvent with a first viscosity; and dissolving a portion of the solid composition with the solvent forming a use solution with a second predetermined viscosity, wherein the second predetermined viscosity is greater than the first viscosity.

Compositions of the invention include: a surfactant having an HLB value from 1 to 10; and a compound of formula (I):where; x is an integer from 2 to 6, y is an integer from 0 to 5, R is a bond or (C-C)alkylene, Ris a hydrogen, halo, aryl, (C-C)alkyl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl, or heterocycyl, Ris independently selected from hydrogen, halo, (C-C)alkyl, (C-C)alkoxy, (C-C) alkenylene. Methods forming stable aqueous and non-aqueous solutions of the same are also provided.

Cleaning concentrate

Compositions of the invention include: (a) a terpene compound; (b) a surfactant; and (c) an ethoxylated aryl alcohol.
