The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods involving a power converter and various control schemes in which the power converter is able to monitor and intelligently manage various operational scenarios such as startup and shutdown of a fuel cell, load sharing among two or more available power sources, and exporting excess power from one available power source to a different power source, as well as transient step up and step down load situations requiring an immediate increase or decrease in the power being provided to a load. Various hierarchical power converter control schemes are also disclosed for addressing different types of operational scenarios, which enable the power converter to centrally manage some or all of the available power sources to optimally use all of the power supplying resources available to it to best meet the requirements of the load.

System and method for intelligent power converter control of fuel cells and other auxiliary power sources

The present disclosure relates to a power supply management system adapted for use with at least one utility proxy power source, to control powering first and second loads when an AC mains power source is not available to provide power to the loads. The system uses an internal DC bus of a power converter to receive power from a utility proxy, and a DC/DC converter/charger of the power converter to receive power from a short term supplemental battery subsystem. The DC/DC converter/charger is used to supply a first AC output signal to power the first load. An AC/DC rectifier of the power converter uses the DC power from the utility proxy, supplied onto the internal bus, to generate a second AC output signal which is applied independently to the second load to power the second load fully independently of the first load.

Power supply management system and method for use with one or multiple different utility proxies

The present disclosure relates to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for monitoring and prioritizing use of available power. The UPS has an electronic controller with a memory and a software control module. The UPS also has a battery, a rectifier for rectifying available AC power from a primary external AC power source to produce DC power, an inverter in communication with the rectifier for generating AC power from the DC power provided by the rectifier, and a DC/DC converter in communication with the rectifier for producing a DC charging current for use in charging the battery. The electronic controller and the software control module are configured to dynamically prioritize the use of available power from at least one of the primary AC power source and from the battery, to maintain adequate power to a load being supported by the UPS, as well as to charge the battery of the UPS when predetermined operating conditions are met.

System and method for using a UPS to dynamically control the amount of AC power received from a utility power source

The present disclosure relates to a power supply management system adapted for use with at least one utility proxy power source, to help control powering a load when an AC mains power source is not available to provide power to the load. The system has a power converter forming an uninterruptible power supply, and includes a controller configured to control operation of the power converter. A supplemental battery subsystem is included which is in communication with the power converter for supplying DC power to the power converter. The controller monitors the application of power from the utility proxy to the load and uses the DC power supplied by the supplemental battery subsystem, when needed, to supplement the generation of power by the power converter, to thus assist the power converter in powering the load along with the power being provided by the utility proxy.

The present disclosure relates to method for use with a system having first and second uninterruptible power supplies (UPS 1 and UPS 2), and where the two UPSs are connected across a DC+ and a DC&#x2212; terminal of a common battery, and where a neutral imbalance between neutral lines of the two UPSs has been corrected, giving rise to a current flow from a DC&#x2212; bus of one of the UPSs to a DC&#x2212; bus of the other one of the UPSs. The method corrects for a nominal DC reference voltage for one of the UPSs to eliminate the current flow to the DC&#x2212; bus of the other UPS.

System and method for detecting and correcting DC bus imbalances between parallel coupled UPS systems sharing a common battery

A static transfer switch is used for switching an output load from a first power source to a second power source. A first switching unit has a first pair of silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR). A second switching unit has a second pair of SCRs arranged in an anti-parallel configuration. The control circuit determines whether at least one of the SCRs is activated in accordance with the voltage between the gate and the cathode of the at least one SCR. If the voltage between the gate in the cathode is at least 150 mV, the control circuit indicates that the at least one of the SCR is activated.

Static transfer switch

A UPS system may be operated selectively in either a high efficiency mode or a low efficiency mode. An inductor is connected in series between the transfer switch and a secondary power source. The transfer switch includes thyristors arranged in a reverse connected configuration. A controller synchronizes gate commands to the thyristors in order to synchronize reserve voltage introduced by the inverter. If the load currents are not in phase with a fundamental voltage of the secondary power source, the controller waits up to a first time period in order to estimate when current through the switches will reach zero. If the out of phase current will reach zero by the end of a second time period, the inverter is switched on at the end of the second time period.
