A composite hybrid gear assembly includes a gear hub formed from a composite material and a gear head assembly. The gear hub includes a shaft region having an axially symmetrical external profile and a hub web region having a flared profile extending from the shaft region. The gear head assembly includes a head web region and a teeth region where the gear head assembly is fixed to the gear hub. Additionally, the composite hybrid gear assembly includes a first sleeve fixed to an external surface of the shaft region. An associated method of making a composite hybrid gear assembly is also provided.

Composite gear assembly and method of making same

A rocket motor has a nozzle that is reconfigurable by erosion or ablation of the material around the throat of the nozzle. The nozzle throat has layers of materials with different erosion characteristics, with the erosion occurring so as to achieve the desired nozzle characteristics (configurations) during different parts of the fuel burn. The nozzle throat includes relatively-high-erosion material layers and relatively-low-erosion material layers, with some layers of the throat resisting erosion, while other of the layers erode or ablate relatively quickly. The relatively-low-erosion material layers may act as thermal barriers to fix the throat at relatively stable geometry for long periods of time, such as during most of the burn of different fuel segments, with the relatively-high-erosion material layers allowing rapid transition of the throat from one geometry to the next. The layers may be made by resin transfer molding (RTM).

A rocket throat insert including an annular body having a radially inner annular wall portion and a radially outer annular portion. The inner wall portion has a contoured radially inner surface defining a nozzle throat. The outer portion includes an annular buttressing structure supporting the inner wall portion and defining one or more insulation gaps arranged annularly around the inner wall portion. The insulation gaps restrict the radial flow of heat through the annular body.

A system and method for forming a conductive pattern. In the illustrative embodiment, the system includes an applicator for applying a conductive substance onto a surface of a structure and a mechanism for precisely moving the applicator such that the conductive substance is applied in a desired pattern. In an illustrative embodiment, the mechanism includes a robotic arm driven by commands from a computer, and the conductive pattern is designed to manipulate the electromagnetic properties of the structure. The system can be used to apply a conductive pattern directly onto an electromagnetic component, such as a radome, IR dome, multi-mode dome, or flat plate EM window, or to apply a conductive pattern onto a component mold during the component fabrication process. In the latter case, the conductive pattern is an integrated part of the component.

System for forming a frequency selective pattern

According to one embodiment of the present invention a method of creating a composite with an object having a central axis is provided which comprises wrapping a first fabric layer around the object in one of a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction around the central axis of the object. A second fabric layer is wrapped over the first fabric layer. The second fabric layer is wrapped around the object in the other of the clockwise or the counterclockwise direction around the central axis. The object is placed in a mold and resin is injected into the mold to form the composite.

Method and apparatus for preform consistency

According to one embodiment of the invention, an apparatus comprises a passive cooling system and a portion of an air vehicle which receives thermal energy. The passive cooling system is disposed adjacent the portion of the air vehicle and comprises a fluid transfer chamber. A fluid transfer element and a coolant are disposed within the fluid transfer chamber. The fluid transfer element wicks a portion of the coolant towards the portion of the air vehicle. The portion of the coolant wicked towards the portion of the air vehicle absorb at least a portion of the thermal energy in a boiling heat transfer.

System and method for internal passive cooling of composite structures

The disclosed compositions and methods for producing composite materials that are suitably adapted for use in elevated temperature environments generally include the use of oxyarylbisorthodinitrile matrix resins in conjunction with aromatic amines to produce an improved phthalonitrile-based composite. Various features and specifications may be controlled, adapted or otherwise optionally modified to improve the temperature-rated performance of the disclosed composite materials. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention generally provide composite materials that offer improved strength at temperatures in excess of 600&#xb0; F.

An obturator is provided for a projectile launched from a gun barrel. The obturator includes an annular ring that is fabricated from a high-temperature resistant composite material. The annular ring has an inner surface that is in contact with the projectile. In addition, when the projectile is fired from the gun barrel, an outer surface of the annular ring contacts an inner surface of a bore of the gun barrel. When the projectile is fired from the gun barrel, the radial distance between the inner surface and the outer surface of the annular ring substantially equals or exceeds the radial distance between an outer surface of the projectile and the inner surface of the bore of the gun barrel at at least one point. This configuration restricts a flow of charge gases from an aft end of the projectile to a forward end of the projectile as the projectile is fired from the gun barrel.

High-temperature obturator for a gun-launched projectile

A method of creating or fabricating a composite preform wherein a mixture of a catalyst and a first epoxy resin is applied to at least one layer of fibers, preferably in the form of a fabric, mat or unidirectional tape. A plurality of stacked layers is formed from layers of fibers with applied mixture thereon, preferably in a mold. The layers are pressurized and/or heated to reduce the viscosity, such as but not limited to melting, of the first epoxy resin and catalyst and then allowed to fuse together to form a preform. The preform in the closed mold is impregnated with a mixture of a second epoxy resin and a polycyanate to cause cross-linking, the cross-linking including the first epoxy resin. The first and second epoxy resins may be the same.

Tackifier application for resin transfer molding

An absorber for a microwave module and method of fabrication thereof wherein an ink is provided from a mixture of powdered iron and a resin. The ink is then screen printed or mask printed onto the interior surface of the lid of the microwave module in a predetermined pattern to lower the Q of the cavities within the module. The lowered Q suppresses the electromagnetic resonance and thereby minimizes the EMI problems. Furthermore, the absorber material reduces EMI between sections of the module at frequencies where no cavity resonances occur.
