An article and a method of manufacturing the article is disclosed. The method includes providing the article including a substrate and a coating at least partially disposed on the substrate. The coating includes an outer surface. The coating further includes platinum and chromium. The method further includes applying cold work to the outer surface of the coating to produce a cold-worked layer extending from the outer surface of the coating to a cold work depth. The cold-worked layer includes approximately 45% cold work. The cold work depth is between about 30 microns to about 150 microns from the outer surface of the coating.

Article and method of manufacturing the same

A method for the manufacture of a component comprises the following steps, in sequence using an additive layer manufacturing process to build a three-dimensional net shape of the component; performing a first abrasive blasting operation on a region of a surface of the component; and performing a second abrasive blasting operation on the region. The angle of incidence of the abrasive on the surface in the first abrasive blasting operation is less than the angle of incidence of the abrasive on the surface in the second abrasive blasting operation.

A method of determining the service life of a gas turbine engine component comprises providing, within a gas turbine engine, a component having an air washed surface, the component comprises a metal, wherein the air washed surface receives a supply of cooling air from a chamber within the gas turbine engine. The method also comprises mounting a metallic test sample within the chamber so as to be located in the supply of air which is delivered to the air washed surface. The metallic test sample is constructed of the same metal as the component. The method further comprises removing the metallic test sample and determining the degree of corrosion of the metallic test sample.

A gas turbine engine component made of a nickel-based superalloy, the gas turbine engine component comprising a protective coating. The protective coating includes an inner diffusion barrier layer including any one or any combination of elements selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, tantalum, tungsten, hafnium and iridium, and an outer layer of hard material formed of hard particles embedded in a matrix.

The novel nickel-base superalloy useful in an additive manufacturing process or a powder-based manufacturing process includes the following composition in wt %: Cr 8.0-8.5; Co 9.0-9.5; Mo 0.4-0.6; W 9.3-9.7; Ta 2.9-3.6; Al 4.9-5.6; Ti 0.2-1.0; Hf 0-0.05; C 0.005-0.03; B 0.005-0.02; Zr 0.005-0.1; Nb 0.2-1; Mn 0-0.6; and S 0-0.002 (&#x2264;20 ppm); the balance nickel and incidental elements and unavoidable impurities.

Nickel-base superalloy and use thereof

A method of fatigue testing a component comprising the steps of machining a channel of predetermined depth and predetermined width in a surface of a component, applying a salt solution into the channel in the surface of the component and heating the component to a suitable temperature to evaporate the solvent from the salt solution to deposit the salt in the channel in the surface of the component, placing the component in an atmosphere containing air and sulphur dioxide at a predetermined temperature for a predetermined period of time to precondition the grain boundaries, and fatigue testing the component. The method is useful for determining the fatigue life of gas turbine engine discs or gas turbine engine rotor blades particularly the firtree shaped disc posts or the firtree shaped rotor blade roots.
