Disclosed herein are in vivo non-invasive methods and devices for the measurement of the hemodynamic parameters, such as such as blood pressure, stroke volume, cardiac output, performance of the aortic and mistral heart valves, arterial blood velocity profile, blood viscosity and the blood flow induced arterial wall shear stress, hypertensive/hypotensive and vasodilation/vasocontraction state and aging status of a subject, and the mechanical anelastic in vivo properties of the arterial blood vessels. An exemplary method requires obtaining the peripheral pulse volume waveform (PVW), the peripheral pulse pressure waveform (PPW), and the peripheral pulse velocity waveform (PUW) from the same artery; calculating the time phase shift between the PPW and PVW, and the plot of pulse pressure versus pulse volume; and determining the blood pressures and power law components of the anelastic model from the waveforms PPW and PVW, the cardiac output and heart valves performances from the waveforms PPW and PUW, and the anelastic in vivo properties of the descending, thoracic and abdominal aorta. The disclosed methods and devices can be used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease in a subject in need thereof.

Method to quantify the hemodynamic and vascular properties in vivo from arterial waveform measurements

Disclosed herein are in vivo non-invasive methods and devices for the measurement of the hemodynamic parameters and aortic valve conformance and compliance in a subject. The method requires measuring the peripheral pulse volume waveform (PVW), the peripheral pulse pressure waveform (PPW), and the peripheral pulse velocity waveform (PUW) from the same artery using a non-invasive device. The waveforms PPW and PUW are used to calculate the waveform dPdU which is used to determine aortic valve ejection volume, closure volume, and quality factor, as well as stroke volume and cardiac output. The disclosed methods and devices are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of aortic valve disease, disorders, and dysfunction.

Systems and methods for thermal recovery of shallow bitumen using increased permeability inclusions. A method of producing hydrocarbons from a subterranean formation includes the steps of: propagating at least one generally planar inclusion outward from a wellbore into the formation; injecting a fluid into the inclusion, thereby heating the hydrocarbons; and during the injecting step, producing the hydrocarbons from the wellbore. A well system includes at least one generally planar inclusion extending outward from a wellbore into a formation; a fluid injected into the inclusion, hydrocarbons being heated as a result of the injected fluid; and a tubular string through which the hydrocarbons are produced, the tubular string extending to a location in the wellbore below the inclusion, and the hydrocarbons being received into the tubular string at that location.

Thermal recovery of shallow bitumen through increased permeability inclusions

Systems and methods for drainage of a heavy oil reservoir via a horizontal wellbore. A method of improving production of fluid from a subterranean formation includes the step of propagating a generally vertical inclusion into the formation from a generally horizontal wellbore intersecting the formation. The inclusion is propagated into a portion of the formation having a bulk modulus of less than approximately 750,000 psi. A well system includes a generally vertical inclusion propagated into a subterranean formation from a generally horizontal wellbore which intersects the formation. The formation comprises weakly cemented sediment.

Drainage of heavy oil reservoir via horizontal wellbore

Casing deformation and control for inclusion propagation in earth formations. A method of forming at least one inclusion in a subterranean formation includes the steps of: installing a liner within a casing section in a wellbore intersecting the formation; and expanding the liner and the casing section, thereby applying an increased compressive stress to the formation. Another method of forming the inclusion includes the steps of: installing an expansion control device on a casing section, the device including at least one latch member; expanding the casing section radially outward in a wellbore, the expanding step including widening at least one opening in a sidewall of the casing section, and displacing the latch member in one direction; and preventing a narrowing of the opening after the expanding step, the latch member resisting displacement thereof in an opposite direction.

Casing deformation and control for inclusion propagation

A method and apparatus for enhanced recovery of petroleum fluids from the subsurface by injection of a steam and hydrocarbon vaporized solvent in contact with the oil sand formation and the heavy oil and bitumen in situ. Multiple propped hydraulic fractures are constructed from the well bore into the oil sand formation and filled with a highly permeable proppant. Steam, a hydrocarbon solvent, and a non-condensing diluent gas are injected into the propped fractures, and flows upwards and outwards to contact and heat the in situ bitumen, which softens and flows by gravity to the well bore, and is pumped to the surface where the solvent can be recycled for further injection.

Enhanced hydrocarbon recovery by steam injection of oil sand formations

A method and apparatus for initiating and propagating a vertical hydraulic fracture in unconsolidated and weakly cemented sediments from a single bore hole to control the fracture initiation plane and propagation of the hydraulic fracture, enabling greater yield and recovery of petroleum fluids from the formation. An injection casing with multiple fracture initiation sections is inserted and grouted into a bore hole. A foam fracture fluid carrying a proppant is injected into the injection casing and opens the fracture initiation sections to dilate the formation in a direction orthogonal to the required fracture azimuth plane. Propagation of the fracture is controlled by limiting the fracture fluid form to that of a stable foam fracturing fluid during the fracturing process. The injection casing initiation section remains open after fracturing providing direct hydraulic connection between the production well bore, the permeable proppant filled fracture and the formation.

Hydraulic fracture initiation and propagation control in unconsolidated and weakly cemented sediments

Casing expansion and formation compression for permeability plane orientation. A method of forming at least one increased permeability plane in a subterranean formation includes the steps of: installing a casing section in a wellbore intersecting the formation; expanding the casing section in the wellbore; and then injecting a fluid into the formation, the injecting step being performed after the expanding step is completed. Another method includes the steps of: applying an increased compressive stress to the formation, the compressive stress being radially directed relative to a wellbore intersecting the formation; and then piercing the formation radially outward from the wellbore, thereby initiating the increased permeability plane. Yet another method includes the steps of: applying a reduced stress to the formation, the reduced stress being directed orthogonal to a wellbore intersecting the formation; and then piercing the formation with at least one penetration extending radially outward from the wellbore, thereby relieving the reduced stress at the penetration.

Flow control for increased permeability planes in unconsolidated formations. A well system includes a casing expansion device interconnected in a casing string for initiating an inclusion propagated into a formation surrounding the casing string. The device has at least one opening in a sidewall for fluid communication between the inclusion and an interior of the casing string. A flow control device is retrievably installed in the expansion device and controls flow between the formation and an interior of the casing string. A method of controlling flow of fluid between a formation and an interior of a casing string includes the steps of interconnecting a casing expansion device in the casing string; expanding the device to thereby initiate propagation of an inclusion into the formation; and installing a flow control device in the expansion device to thereby control flow between the inclusion and the casing string interior.

Flow control for increased permeability planes in unconsolidated formations

Initiation of injection planes in a well. A method of forming at least one generally planar inclusion in a subterranean formation includes the steps of: expanding a wellbore in the formation by injecting a material into an annulus positioned between the wellbore and a casing lining the wellbore; increasing compressive stress in the formation as a result of the expanding step; and then injecting a fluid into the formation, thereby forming the inclusion in a direction of the increased compressive stress. Another method includes the steps of: expanding a wellbore in the formation by injecting a material into an annulus positioned between the wellbore and a casing lining the wellbore; reducing stress in the formation in a tangential direction relative to the wellbore; and then injecting a fluid into the formation, thereby forming the inclusion in a direction normal to the reduced tangential stress.
