Acicular boehmite nanoparticles, methods of making acicular boehmite nanoparticles, and composite materials that contain acicular boehmite nanoparticles are described. The acicular boehmite nanoparticles are prepared in a continuous hydrothermal reactor from a feedstock solution containing a soluble aluminum-containing precursor.

Acicular boehmite nanoparticles

Aerogel composites and bonded aerogel composites are described. The aerogel composites include monolithic aerogel material located in cavities between a base layer and a structured layer that is bonded to the base layer. Additional layers may be bonded to the base layer and/or the structured layer to form bonded aerogel composites.

Aerogel composites

A method of applying a conductive pattern of metal onto a web of indefinite length material. This method includes applying a metal containing composition onto the web in a predefined pattern, providing a roll having a very low thermal mass, and conveying the patterned web around the roll while simultaneously applying heat energy to the metal containing composition thereby converting the metal to a conductive pattern. This allows for flexible circuitry to be fabricated in an inexpensive roll-to-roll process.

Method for continuous sintering on indefinite length webs

A method for the preparation of functionalized particles includes providing a feedstock that includes particles, a surface treatment agent reactive with the particles and solvent. The feedstock is direct through a continuous hydrothermal reactor maintained at a temperature sufficient to react the particles with the surface treatment agents to thereby provide functionalized particles. The method of the invention is capable of providing the functionalized particles in less than about 4 hours.

Process for the surface modification of particles

A method for the preparation of functionalized particles includes providing a feedstock made of particles, a surface treatment agent reactive with the particles, and solvent. The feedstock is exposed to microwave radiation to heat the feedstock and react the particles with the surface treatment agent to provide the functionalized particles in less than about 60 minutes.
