Process for producing homopolymers or copolymers of conjugated dienes by contacting monomeric material including at least one conjugated diene with a catalyst system comprising (A) a first transition metal compound selected from Cr, Mo and W compounds, and a second transition metal compound selected from Fe, Co and Ni compounds, (B) a catalyst modifier and, optionally, (C) one or more catalyst activators.

Diene polymerisation

Supported catalyst system for the polymerization of olefins, having at least two different monocyclopentadienyl transition metal compounds, one or more activators including an ionic compound having (i) a cation and (ii) an anion having up to 100 non-hydrogen atoms and the anion containing at least one substituent comprising a moiety having an active hydrogen, and one or more support materials. The supported 'mixed or dual site' catalyst systems having different monocyclopentadienyl catalysts when activated by specific ionic activators lead to catalyst systems showing an improved balance of properties which may be used to prepare LLDPE polymers having broad melt flow ratios.

Supported polymerisation catalysts

Method for the preparation of a blown film containing 300-600 gels/mof size in the range 100-2000 &#x3bc;m as measured by an optical control system, in which the film is derived by extrusion from an ethylene-&#x3b1;-olefin copolymer. The method is carried out by preparing the copolymer in a particle forming polymerization process in the presence of a single site catalyst system containing a single site catalyst, a cocatalyst, and a support material.

Polymer films

Process for producing homopolymers or copolymers of conjugated dienes by contacting monomeric material having at least one conjugated diene with a catalyst system including two or more different transition metal compounds and optionally one or more activators. Preferred transition metal compounds are based on cobalt and chromium, especially complexes thereof having benzimidazole ligands.

A polymerization catalyst composition comprising (1) a transition metal compound of Formula (A), Z being 5-membered heterocyclic containing at least one carbon, at least one nitrogen and at least one of nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the others being nitrogen or carbon; M is a Group 3 to 11 metal or a lanthamide metal; Eand Eare divalent groups of aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, or heterocyclic; Dand Dare donor atoms or groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are zero or integer such that X and L satisfy valency/oxidation state of M, (2) a catalyst-activating support which is a solid particulate substance, insoluble in hydrocarbons, comprising at least magnesium and aluminum atoms and hydrocarbyloxy groups containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, the molar ration of Mg/Al being in the range 1.0 to 300 and the molar ratio of hydrocarbyloxy groups to aluminum atoms being in the range 0.5 to 2.0, and optionally, (3) an additional activator selected from aluminum alkyl and boron compounds. 

Polymerisation and oligomerisation catalysts

Process for making a copolymer by copolymerising (1) ethylene with (2) at least one comonomer selected from aliphatic C-Calpha-olefins and (3) 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene, including contacting the monomer with a catalyst comprising a transition metal compound having the following Formula A, and an activating quantity of a suitable activator of the formula shown herein, wherein Z comprises a five-membered heterocyclic group, the five membered heterocyclic group containing at least one carbon atom, at least one nitrogen atom and at least one other hetero atom selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the remaining atoms in the ring being selected from nitrogen and carbon; M is a metal from Group 3 to 11 of the Periodic Table or a lanthanide metal; Eand Eare divalent groups independently selected from (i) aliphatic, hydrocarbon, (ii) alicyclic hydrocarbon, (iii) aromatic hydrocarbon, (iv) alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, (v) heterocyclic groups and (vi) heterosubstituted derivatives of said groups (i) to (v); Dand Dare donor atoms or groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are independently zero or integers such that the number of X and L groups satisfy the valency and oxidation state of the metal M.

Polyolefins

A supported catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises a selected ionic activator, a selected organometallic catalyst and a support material. The selected activator must contain an active hydrogen moeity. The organometallic catalyst is characterized by having a phosphinimine ligand and a substituted cyclopentadienyl ligand (which contains from 7 to 30 carbon atoms). The supported catalyst exhibits excellent activity in gas phase olefin polymerizations and may be used under substantially 'non-fouling' polymerization conditions.

Supported polymerization catalysts

A polymerisation catalyst comprising (1) a transition metal compound of Formula (A), and optionally (2) an activator, wherein Z is 5-membered heterocyclic containing carbon, nitrogen and at least one other selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the remaining atoms in the ring being nitrogen and carbon; M is a metal from Group 3 to 11 or a lanthanide metal; Eand Eare divalent hydrocarbon, heterocyclic or heterosubstituted derivatives of these; Dand Dare donor atoms or groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are zero or integers so that X and L satisfy the valency/oxidation state of M, characterized in that the complex contains at least one polymerisable olefinic double bond which is present in, or substituent to, at least one of the atoms, groups or ligands represented by Z, E, D and L. The catalyst binds to the forming polymer providing product with good particle morphology. 

Polymerisation catalyst

A supported catalyst system comprises (a) a dehydrated support material, (b) a transition metal compound, and (c) an activator and is characterised in that the support material has been pretreated with at least two different organoaluminum compounds prior to content with either or both the transition metal-compound or the activator. The prefer transition metal compound is a metallocene and the supported catalyst systems are suitable for the preparation of polymers having broad molecular weight distributions and improved melt strength.

Supported olefin polymerization catalyst

The invention provides blends comprising an ethylene copolymer formed from ethylene with at least one comonomer selected from (a) the group comprising compounds represented by the formula HC&#x2550;CHR wherein R represents a C-Clinear, branched or cyclic alkyl group or a C-Caryl group, and (b) a C-Clinear, branched or cyclic diene. Each copolymer has a specific density, a specific molecular weight distribution, and a specific comonomer content distribution characteristic.

Ethylene copolymers and blend compositions

A supported polymerization catalyst system is prepared by a method comprising the following steps: (i) addition of a cocatalyst to a porous support, (ii) mixing a polymerisation catalyst with a polymerisable monomer, and (iii) contacting together the components resulting from steps (i) and (ii). The porous support is preferably silica and the polymerisation catalyst is preferably a metallocene. The polymerisable monomer is typically 1-hexene and the supported catalyst system provides advantages a slowly decaying activity profile particularly when operating in the gas phase.

A supported polymerisation catalyst system comprises a porous support, a polymerisation catalyst and a cocatalyst wherein the support has been treated with an inert material such as polyisobutene. The support is preferably silica and is preferably treated with the inert material prior to contact with the other components. Preferably the polymerisation catalyst is a metallocene and the polymerisation catalyst system reduces the initial peak isotherm allowing for a smoother activity increase in particular for polymerisations carried out in the gas phase.

The use of high activity 'Single Site' polymerization catalysts often causes the fouling of polymerization reactors. The problem is particularly acute with gas phase polymerizations. While not wishing to be bound by theory it is believed that the fouling is initiated by the buildup of static charges in the reactor. The use of anti-static agents mitigates this problem, but typical antistatic agents contain polar species, which can deactivate the polymerization catalyst. We have now discovered that the use of a porous metal oxide support allows large levels of a selected antistatic agent to be used in a manner that reduces static/fouling problems in highly active polymerization catalysts.

Supported antistatic polymerization catalyst

An improved method for the preparation of a supported polymerisation catalyst system comprises the combination of (i) a porous support (ii) a polymerisable monomer, (iii) a polymerisation catalyst, and (iv) a cocatalyst, characterised in that the polymerisable monomer is added to the porous support before addition of one or both of the polymerisation catalyst and the cocatalyst. The preferred polymerisation catalyst is a metallocene complex and the preferred porous support is silica. The resultant supported catalysts are stable over long periods of time. The supported catalyst are particularly suitable for use in the gas phase.

Supported catalyst systems are provided comprising (a) a transition metal compound, (b) an activator comprising (iii) an aluminoxane or (iv) a Group lilA metal or metalloid compound, and (c) a support material comprising an inorganic metal oxide, inorganic metal halide or polymeric material or mixtures thereof characterised in that the support material has been pretreated with a source of a transition metal atom. The preferred transition metal compounds are metallocenes and the source of the transition metal atom is typically a ferrous or cupric metal salt. The supported catalyst systems show improved activity and also may reduce fouling in gas phase fluidised bed processes.
