The present invention relates to an inkjet ink comprising: a) colorant; b) a polymeric binder having an acid number below 200 selected from the group consisting of a styrene-acrylic polymeric binder, an acrylic polymeric binder, an anionic polyurethane binder and combinations thereof; c) water dispersible surfactant; and d) a solvent which does not dissolve an acidified form of the binder, the solvent having a vapor pressure less than 0.1 mm at 25&#xb0; C. The invention further relates to methods of making using the ink, printing systems and ink sets which use this ink.

A collection spittoon with a vacuum connection draws air and ink ejected during service spitting through an opening in the top of the spittoon. The collected ink includes main ejected drops and aerosol generated during the service process. A method for servicing an inkjet printhead comprises positioning the printhead over an opening in a spittoon chamber, establishing an air flow into the chamber through the opening, actuating the printhead to spit ink droplets in a service mode, and collecting the ink droplets and associated aerosol by drawing the ink droplets and aerosol into the chamber with the air flow.

A thermal inkjet printer is provided. The printer has a sensor that detects the operating temperature of its printhead. If the temperature of the printhead is below the printhead's normal operating temperature when the printer is going to start to print an image or document, the operating temperature of the printhead is set at a temperature higher than its normal temperature. This is to ensure that the drop-volume of the printer stays at an optimum level when the printer is beginning to start to print the image or document after a period of non-use. Shortly after the printer has started the printing task, the operating temperature of the printhead is reduced to its normal operating temperature.

An inkjet printer for printing on a print medium includes a printhead having an ink orifice formed therein through which an ink drop is ejected into a print zone between the printhead and the print medium during printing, and an air movement system which directs a stream of gas through the print zone as the ink drop is ejected during printing. When ejected, the ink drop forms a head and a tail. As such, the stream of gas converges the tail of the ink drop and the head of the ink drop during printing so as to improve the shape of a dot formed by the ink drop on the print medium.

Improved methods and apparatuses are provided for use in printing color swaths in a bi-directional printing device. The bi-directional printing device is configured to use a plurality of color inks including at least one light color ink and at least one dark color ink. One method includes selectively printing at least one dark color ink on a print media based on a non-uniform probabilistic print mask function, and selectively printing at least one light color ink on the print media based on a substantially uniform probabilistic print mask function.

A method for minimizing cross-contamination of print cartridges in an inkjet printing system due to aerosol drift by employing a bi-directional spitting scheme coupled with a configuration of the print cartridges. The method includes a carriage for traversing across a print medium and a spittoon, the carriage having a plurality of N receptacles, the receptacles identified from left to right as positions,through N, includes mounting a reactive print cartridge in either positions,and N, or both, on the carriage, the reactive print cartridges having a plurality of nozzles for ejecting reactive droplets and mounting a plurality of print cartridges in the remaining positions on the carriage, the print cartridges having a plurality of nozzles for ejecting ink droplets. A thermal ink jet printhead that includes an adhesion interface between a silicon carbide layer of a thin film substrate and a polymer ink barrier layer in the vicinity of ink chambers formed in the polymer ink barrier layer, and an adhesion interface between a silicon carbide layer disposed on the ink barrier layer and an orifice plate. An intervening adhesion promoter can be located between the silicon carbide layer of the thin film substrate and the polymer ink barrier layer, and between the silicon carbide layer disposed on the ink barrier layer and the orifice plate.
