A method for formulating an aqueous dispersion of a polymer includes dissolving a polymer such as an acrylic polyol in a solvent to form a polymer solution. A surfactant is added to the polymer solution, and water is then added with mixing sufficient to dispersed the polymer in the water. The resulting aqueous dispersion can be mixed with a water dispersible polyisocyanate to produce coating materials which can be cured to form tough films and coatings.

The self-dispersing curable epoxy resin is based on a polyoxyalkyleneamine. Thus, a polyoxyalkyleneamine was present as a chemical precursor of the epoxy resin or a starting material therefor. The self-dispersing curable epoxy resin ester of the invention is in the form of an aqueous dispersion. When dried, films of the self-dispersing curable epoxy resin ester dispersion are useful as a coating composition.

A process for fixing dyes impregnated in fine-dimensional synthetic textile substrates in an environmentally safe manner. The process comprises contacting the dyed synthetic substrates with a phenol- and formaldehyde-free dye-fixative composition comprising: (a) polymethacrylic acid, (b) copolymers of methacrylic acid consisting essentially of methacrylic acid and an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer selected from the group consisting of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propanesulfonic acid, sodium vinyl sulfonate, sodium styrene sulfonate, alkyl acrylate, and combinations thereof, (c) combinations of (a) and (b), and (d) water.

Polythiols prepared by the reaction of hydrogen sulfide or organic dithiols with polyglycidyl substituted amines have been found to be outstanding curing agents for epoxy resins. Epoxy resins cured with these polythiols are characterized by not only improved gel times, but also improved cure rates, better heat resistance and greater resistance to absorption of water. A useful polythiol is the reaction product of N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-m-xylylenediamine with hydrogen sulfide.

Superplasticizers for cementitious compositions are produced from a raw material mixture of (1) naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and (2) free sulfuric acid using a 1-step process or a 2-step process. In the 1-step process, the mixture is neutralized with a zinc compound such as zinc oxide to a pH of about 2 to obtain a superplasticizer mixture of the free acid of the naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and zinc sulfate. In the 2-step process, the mixture is first neutralized with a zinc compound such as zinc oxide to a pH of about 2 and then with a base such as sodium hydroxide to a pH of about 6 to obtain a superplasticizer mixture of the sodium salt of the naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and zinc sulfate. These superplasticizer mixtures are superior to a low salt content commercial sodium salt of a naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate where sodium sulfate content has been reduced by lime treatment.

These materials can be used alone or in combination with salts of aromatic sulfonic acid formaldehyde condensates.

Superplasticizers with improved water reducing properties for cement, cement slurries, mortar, grout and concrete are formed from synergistic mixtures of (1) aromatic sulfonic acid formaldehyde condensates, such as the sodium salt of naphthalene sulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and (2) hydroxy aromatic compounds such as pyrogallol and gallic acid. Addition of these mixtures to the same cementitious materials also results in improved compressive strength.

The treated side of the sheet is brought into contact with a developer. Upon application of pressure, color is produced by reaction between the color former and the developer.
