An auxiliary winding for use in an engine-driven generator system is disclosed. The auxiliary winding is separate from but resides with the main winding in the stator slots of an alternator in the generator system. The auxiliary winding is configured to utilize the fundamental component of the flux in the airgap of the alternator along with selected spatial harmonic components to provide power to an automatic voltage regulator during all operating conditions.

Auxiliary winding for a generator

A generator structure is provided for generating an AC power for a load. The generator structure includes a generator connectable to a load and an engine operatively connected to the generator for driving the same. A generator controller is operatively connected to the engine for controlling operation thereof and operatively connected to a generator for controlling the AC power generated thereby. A communications link connects the generator control to a network.

Control system for stand-by electrical generator

A method of controlling an engine-driven, electrical generator is provided. The generator generates an output voltage at a frequency with the engine running at an operating speed. The method includes the steps of connecting the generator to a load and varying the operating speed of the engine to optimize fuel consumption in response to the load. Thereafter, the frequency of the output voltage is modified to a predetermined level.

Method of controlling a variable speed constant frequency generator

A method is provided for controlling a bi-fuel generator set. The generator set includes a controller, a generator for generating electrical power, and an engine for driving the generator. A flow of gaseous fuel is provided, and operation of the engine and the generator is monitored. The flow of gaseous fuel is adjusted in response to various predetermined operating conditions on the engine. In addition, the flow of gaseous fuel may be selectively passed through a charge cooler remote from a radiator for the engine. The flow of gaseous fuel may be cooled by the charge cooler in response to certain operating conditions on the engine.

Method of controlling a bi-fuel generator set

In accordance with the present invention, a system controller and method for monitoring and controlling a plurality of generator sets are provided. Each generator set generates electrical power and includes a generator communications link for connecting a generator set to a network. A user interface allows a user to select a generator set and set values for various predetermined operating parameters of the selected generator sets. Thereafter, a communications link connectable to the network transmits the user set values of the predetermined operating parameters to the selected generator set.

System controller and method for monitoring and controlling a plurality of generator sets

A 'hot start' method for arc welding includes selecting a first weld current, setting a time interval, striking an arc, flowing a second, higher weld current through the welding rod and then, after a brief time interval, reducing the current through the rod to the value of the first weld current. Also disclosed is a new arc welder stator having two groups of slots around a core. The group of larger slots contains the weld current windings and slots in the group of smaller slots contain windings for timing, gate voltage, battery charging, auxiliary power and the like. A new cooling apparatus for an arc welder has an air duct and a 'double-bladed' fan for flowing air along several paths and cooling both the welder control section and the generating section. A new method for electronically controlling engine speed in an engine-driven arc welder is also disclosed. Such method includes manipulating a current-selecting device, contacting a work piece with a welding rod, accelerating the engine to an elevated speed and then either maintaining such speed or reducing it, depending upon the value of weld current selected.

Arc welder and method providing use-enhancing features

A permanent magnet alternator includes a stator core having outwardly projecting teeth and further includes a plurality of permanent magnets surrounding the stator core. The stator core is formed from a continuous, helically wound metallic strip having a plurality of teeth defined between slots formed in one edge thereof. The stator core is formed by winding the strip edgewise around a cylindrical mandrel. To facilitate winding and avoid distortion, arcuate regions, conforming to the curve of the mandrel, are formed in the strip opposite the teeth.

Permanent magnet alternator

An engine-driven generator having a battery powered starter motor includes a permanent magnet battery charger/pre-exciter for charging the starting battery and for exciting the main alternator field winding of an AC synchronous alternator included in the engine-driven generator. A first winding in the permanent magnet battery charger/pre-exciter provides power to a first voltage regulator that, in turn, maintains a desired load voltage substantially independently of alternator loading. A second winding within the permanent magnet battery charger/pre-exciter supplies power to a second voltage regulator that maintains a desired battery charging voltage substantially independently of the alternator loading. Use of the permanent magnet battery charger/pre-exciter maintains a desired battery charge current and a desired main alternator field excitation substantially independently of the load current supplied by the alternator.

Battery charger/pre-exciter for engine-driven generator

An engine-driven generator includes an internal combustion engine, a permanent magnet alternator and an AC to AC converter. The output frequency and voltage of the permanent magnet alternator are largely dependent on engine speed and the alternator load. The AC to AC converter converts the speed-dependent alternating potential developed by the alternator to another alternating potential whose frequency and voltage are largely independent of engine speed. Voltage regulation is provided by varying the engine speed in accordance with the load current. Frequency regulation is provided by frequency dividing the alternator output by an integer divisor that varies in accordance with engine speed. Additional voltage regulation is provided by deleting selected cycles of the alternator output current as needed to maintain the RMS output voltage within predetermined limits. A stepper motor coupled to the throttle of the internal combustion engine controls the speed of the engine in accordance with commands received from an electronic system control.

Engine-driven generator

An engine-driven generator includes an internal combustion engine, a permanent magnet alternator and an AC to AC converter. The output frequency and voltage of the permanent magnet alternator are largely dependent on engine speed and the alternator load. The AC to AC converter converts the speed-dependent alternating current developed by the alternator to another alternating current whose frequency and voltage are largely independent of engine speed. Voltage regulation is provided by varying the engine speed in accordance with the load current. Frequency regulation is provided by frequency dividing the alternator output by an integer divisor that varies in accordance with engine speed. Additional voltage regulation is provided by deleting selected cycles of the alternator output current as needed to maintain the RMS output voltage within predetermined limits.

An electric motor, particularly for driving a gramophone, a tape recorder or an electric instrument at a low rotational speed whereby an induction effect is utilized to achieve good starting torque and a reluctance effect to give good torque when the motor is locked in and running synchronously. The motor includes a stator assembly with a first plurality of pairs of primary pole pieces each pair constituted by a first metal part for the energization by an in-phase current and a second plurality of pairs of primary pole pieces each pair constituted by a second metal part for energization by an out of phase current. The respective parts also define slots constituting secondary pole pieces. A rotor assembly defines a plurality of further pole pieces having a pitch corresponding to the pitch of the secondary pieces, so that when the secondary pieces associated with the first plurality are opposite to the respective ones of the further pole pieces the secondary pole pieces associated with the second plurality of pieces are displaced with respect to respective ones of the further pole pieces by the phase angle between in-phase and out-of-phase currents.
