An electromagnetic actuator includes an inner magnet arranged relative to an axis, an outer magnet arranged a radial distance from the axis, an inner radial wall of the outer magnet facing an outer radial wall of the inner magnet, the inner and outer radial walls being separated by an air gap, a voice coil arranged in the air gap separating the inner and outer magnets, and an actuator coupling plate attached to the voice coil. During operation of the device electrical activation of the voice coil causes axial motion of the actuator coupling plate.

Panel audio loudspeaker electromagnetic actuator

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for changing a distributed mode loudspeaker's fundamental frequency. One of the systems includes a distributed mode loudspeaker comprising an actuator that includes: a supported portion, and a cantilevered portion having a length, a first fundamental frequency, and adapted to create a force to cause vibration of a load to generate sound waves using the first fundamental frequency; a support element connected to the supported portion of the actuator and adapted to adjust, based on a change to a shape of the support element, a size of the length of the cantilevered portion to change the first fundamental frequency to a second fundamental frequency with which the load will generate sound waves; and a frequency selection module that provides a signal to the support element to cause the support element to change shape.

Active distributed mode actuator

An electromagnetic actuator includes an inner magnet arranged relative to an axis, an outer magnet arranged a radial distance from the axis, an inner radial wall of the outer magnet facing an outer radial wall of the inner magnet, the inner and outer radial walls being separated by an air gap, a voice coil arranged in the air gap separating the inner and outer magnets, and an actuator coupling plate attached to the voice coil. The inner magnet is axially magnetized and the outer magnet is radially magnetized. During operation of the device electrical activation of the voice coil causes axial motion of the actuator coupling plate.

Distributed mode loudspeaker electromagnetic actuator with axially and radially magnetized circuit

A system includes a device chassis with a back panel and a haptic conduction interface. An acoustic radiating panel, attached to the chassis, and the back panel define a space. A moving magnet actuator is positioned in the space and mechanically coupled to the acoustic radiating panel, the moving magnet actuator including an element having a thickness smaller than a first dimension of the space, the moving magnet actuator being configured to vibrate the element during operating. An electronic control module coupled to the moving magnet actuator is programmed to activate the moving magnet actuator with a haptic signal that displaces the element in the first direction an amount sufficient to cause the element to contact the haptic conduction interface, the haptic signal having an amplitude and frequency sufficient to generate a haptic response in the device chassis.
