The present invention relates to systems and methods for controlling the atmosphere in the cabin () of a vehicle. The system comprises a carbon dioxide removal conduit () comprising a regenerable carbon dioxide removal chamber () containing a carbon dioxide sorbent material and a regeneration circuit () arranged to expel the desorbed carbon dioxide at a location exterior () of the cabin () The system is operable to maintain a carbon dioxide level below 1000 ppm in the passenger cabin for a period of at least 5 minutes while restricting the flow of air from outside the vehicle into the passenger cabin to 10 L/s or less.

System and process for carbon dioxide removal of air of passenger cabins of vehicles

A crude product stream of 1,4-butandiol and one or more of &#x3b3;-butyrolactone, 2-(4-hydroxybutoxy)-tetrahydrofuran, 4-hydroxybutyl(4-hydroxybutyrate), and 3-(4-hydroxybutoxy)-tetrahydrofuran is supplied to a first distillation column. A side-draw of 1,4-butanediol and light components is removed, with the light components including at least some of those produced by reaction in the first distillation column. The stream is passed to a hydrogenation zone and subjected to hydrogenation in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. A 1,4-butanediol product stream having a reduced content of 2-(4-hydroxybutoxy)-tetrahydrofuran is recovered and passed to a second distillation column operated such that (4-hyroxybutyl)-4-hydroxybutyrate is removed as a bottom stream and a 1,4-butanediol stream is removed as overhead. The overhead stream removed is passed to a third distillation column and a purified 1,4-butanediol stream is recovered.

Process for purifying a stream comprising 1,4-butanediol

A process for production of dialkyl succinate from bio-succinic acid feedstock where solid bio-succinic acid is fed to a reactor to react with alkanol by autocatalytic esterification. Products from the reactor including unreacted succinic acid, mono alkyl ester, dialkyl ester, alkanol, water and impurities are sent to a reaction distillation column for esterification of succinic acid and further esterification of mono alkyl ester with upflowing alkanol. The bottoms products from the reaction distillation column including residual succinic acid, mono alkyl ester, dialkyl ester, impurities and alkanol are sent to a bottoms stream separation zone where di-alkyl ester is separated from alkanol, succinic acid, mono alkyl ester and impurities. The tops products from the reaction distillation column including alkanol, water and organic components are sent to a top stream distillation zone where alkanol is separated from water and organic components. The organic components are recycled to the reaction zone column.

Process for the preparation of succinic acid ester

In a process for the production of dialkyl succinate from a feedstock comprising maleic anhydride, feed in the liquid phase is provided to a reactor operated at a temperature of at least about 150&#xb0; C. The feed is contacted with hydrogen at a pressure of at least about 300 psig in the presence of an acid tolerant catalyst and an alkanol wherein at least some of the carbon carbon double bonds of the maleic anhydride are hydrogenated to form succinic acid and that the heat generated promotes esterification to dialkyl succinate in situ. A stream of dialkyl succinate is recovered from the reactor.

Process for the production of dialkyl succinate from maleic anyhdride

A process for the production of dialkyl succinate from a bio-succinic acid feedstock commencing by feeding bio-succinic acid to a reaction distillation column to enable esterification of the succinic acid. The feedstock is passed co-currently with upflowing alkanol such that an esterification reaction occurs. An overhead vapor stream is removed from the reaction distillation column comprising di-ester, alkanol, water of esterification and organic components. The vapor stream is sent to an alkanol separation column where alkanol is separated from the water of esterification and organic components. A side draw is removed from the alkanol separation column comprising partially immiscible organic and aqueous phases. The side draw is passed to a phase separation apparatus where the partially immiscible organic and aqueous phases are separated. The organic phase is passed to a column where the dialkyl succinate is recovered from residual water and other organic components.

A process for the production of carboxylic acid esters by reaction of a carboxylic acid selected from mono-, di- and polycarboxylic acids, with an alcohol in the presence of water of solution comprising the steps of: (a) providing a solution comprising the carboxylic acid and the water of solution; (b) reacting the solution of the carboxylic acid in an esterification zone with an alcohol to form an ester and water of esterification; (c) removing the water of solution and the water of esterification; and (d) recovering the ester.

Process for the production of esters of mono-, di- or polycarboxylic acids

A process is described for the production of ethers, typically terahydrofuran, by reaction of a corresponding organic feed material selected from dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides, monoesters of dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides, diesters of dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides, lactones, and mixtures of two or more thereof in the presence of hydrogen which comprises the steps of: (a) supplying a stream comprising the organic feed material to a first vaporisation zone and contacting said feed with cycle gas comprising hydrogen such that at least a portion of the feed material is vaporised by and into the cycle gas; (b) supplying at least a portion of the cycle gas and the vaporised feed material to a first reaction zone comprising catalyst and operating under reaction conditions to allow hydrogenation and dehydration to occur; (c) recovering from the first reaction zone an intermediate product stream comprising unreacted feed material, cycle gas, desired product(s), and any co-products and by-products; (d) supplying the intermediate product stream to a second vaporisation zone and contacting it with additional feed material such that the said additional feed material is vaporised by and into the intermediate product stream; (e) supplying the product of step (d) to a subsequent reaction zone comprising catalyst and operating under reaction conditions to allow hydrogenation and, if required, dehydration to occur; and (f) recovering from the subsequent reaction zone a product stream comprising the ether.

Process for the production of ethers, typically thf

Butane-1,4-diol, gamma-butyrolactone or tetrahydrofuran are prepared by vapor phase hydrogenation of a C4-dicarboxylic acid derivative. A maleic anhydride containing vapor stream is contacted in an absorption zone with a first high boiling solvent. A waste gas stream is passed to a scrubbing zone containing a second, higher boiling solvent. The waste gas is purged and the first and second solvents are recovered and recycled. Maleic anhydride is obtained from the absorption zone and converted to a maleic acid diester, which is stripped from the first solvent with hydrogen. The desired products are obtained by hydrogenation.
