A fuel oil composition comprising a major amount of a fuel oil and a minor amount of a compound being the product of the 1,4-addition reaction of (i) ammonia, a primary or secondary hydrocarbyl-substituted amine or a mixture thereof to (ii) a species containing one or more &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carbonyl groups, wherein the compound includes at least one hydrocarbyl group containing at least 10 carbon atoms. The fuel oil composition has improved low temperature properties.

Additives for fuel oils

The use of an additive composition to improve the conductivity of a fuel oil. The additive composition comprises a polymeric condensation product formed by the reaction of an aliphatic aldehyde or ketone, or a reactive equivalent, with at least one ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid.

Fuel oils

A fuel oil composition is disclosed. The fuel oil includes a major proportion of a fuel oil and minor amounts of: (a) at least one polar nitrogen compound effective as a wax anti-settling additive; and (b) at least one reaction product between a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acid or anhydride and hydrazine.

An additive composition for a fuel oil composition and that is free of polycyclic carboxylic acids and of acid derivatives thereof comprises an additive that comprises one or more monocarboxylic acids, each having from 10 to 24 carbon atoms, or acid derivatives thereof, optionally in combination with one or both of an anti-oxidant additive and an anti-static additive.

A fuel oil composition comprising a fuel oil and 0.1 to 10,000 ppm of a polymeric condensation product which is formed by the reaction of an aliphatic aldehyde or ketone, or a reactive equivalent, with either (i) a straight or branched chain C-Calkyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or with (ii) a branched chain C-Calkyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or with (iii) a mixture of long chain C-Calkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, at least one of said alkyls being branched. The polymeric condensation product improves the cold flow characteristics of the fuel oil.

There are disclosed fuel compositions containing an additive formed by admixture of (i) at least one ethylene polymer, (ii) the product of the condensation reaction between an aldehyde or ketone or reactive equivalent thereof and at least one compound comprising one or more aromatic moieties having at least one substituent of the formula XR,and one further substituent R,wherein X is oxygen of sulfur, R,is hydrogen or a moiety bearing at least one hydrocarbyl group and R,represents a hydrocarbyl group and (iii) at least one oil soluble polar nitrogen compound different from the condensation product and having one or more substituents of the formula NR,where R,represents a hydrocarbyl group containing 8 to 40 carbon atoms.

A class of waxes improves the low temperature flow properties of oils.

Compounds of the formula I below are useful as additives in oleaginous compositions: ##STR1## wherein B represents an aromatic system, A represents a hydrocarbyl group, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or are different and each independently is an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group containing 10-40 carbon atoms, provided that one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may represent hydrogen; z is at least 1 and wherein the aromatic system carries at least one substituent group which is an activating group for the ring system or a derivative of an activating group.
