A light source for use in a projection system comprises a pair of lamps each effective to produce a substantially collimated beam. Part of the light emitted by each lamp is directed through the light originating part of the same, or another, lamp. A light combiner is arranged within the path of the light beams from each of the two lamps to provide a composite light beam of a cross section less than the sum of the cross section of the beams produced by each of the lamps.

Light source

Apparatus and techniques for enhancing characteristics of electronic projection systems are detailed. Included among the techniques are both superimposition of sub-images and tiling of superimposed images, the combination of which can be advantageous in improving resolution of projected images. Pre-modulators and polarizing beam splitters also may be used as parts of the innovative systems.

Digital projection equipment and techniques

Apparatus and techniques for enhancing the dynamic range of electronic projection systems are detailed. Included among the techniques are pre-modulation, luminance compensation, and partial luminance compensation.

Equipment and techniques for increasing the dynamic range of a projection system

A display system is disclosed that includes a light source, an integrator rod receiving a light beam from the light source and producing an integrated light beam, a beam splitting device splitting the integrated light beam into at least a first cone of light and a second cone of light, the cones of light having complementary intensity distributions, and at least a first spatial light modulator and a second spatial light modulator, wherein the first spatial light modulator is capable of selectively reflecting portions of the first cone of light in an ON direction and the second spatial light modulator is capable of selectively reflecting portions of the second cone of light in an ON direction. The display system further includes a combining device for combining the selectively reflected portions of the cones of light in the ON direction and projection optics for projecting the combined reflected cones of light.

Methods and systems for low loss separation and combination of light

A projection device includes one or more deformable mirror arrays ( ) arranged to spatially modulate incident light. A totally internally reflecting surface ( ) is arranged to direct light to and from the deformable mirror array ( ). The device may include one or more dichroic layers ( ) arranged such that the light incident on each dichroic layer ( ) is substantially normal incidence to the layer.

An illumination system for illuminating a spatial light modulator. An integrator rod is positioned in the light path between an arc lamp and the spatial light modulator. At the input surface of the integrated rod, there is positioned a field lens for defocusing areas of turbulence within the arc lamp. In the output surface of the integrated rod there is positioned a plate effective to prevent dust from being attracted to the output surface of the integrator rod. The integrator rod is effective to combine light from two separate light sources.

Illumination system

A projection device which includes a plurality of deflectable mirror arrays arranged to spatially modulate incident light. A totally internal reflecting surface is arranged to direct light to and from the deformable mirror array. The device includes on or more dichroic layers arranged at an angle relative to the incident light dependent on the spread of angles on the incident beam relative to the optical axis. Additionally or alternatively, the totally internally reflecting surface may be arranged to direct non-spatially modulated light towards a beam dump.
