An emission abatement device comprises a hydrocarbon trap, a 3-way catalyst downstream from the hydrocarbon trap, and a valve movable to control flow of exhaust gas to the hydrocarbon trap and the 3-way catalyst.

Emission abatement device and method of using same

A tube-to-plate connection and method for making it utilize a plate defining an aperture where the tube is to be attached to the plate, with the portion of the plate surrounding the aperture including a flange extending away from the plane of the plate. The tube side wall lies generally within the flange. The flange and tube wall are simultaneously cut or staked radially by a piercing cutter-staker which pierces the walls of both flange and tube wall to prevent axial movement or rotation of the tube with respect to the flange.

Tube-to-plate connection

A mechanical connection of a first tube to a second tube, in which the first tube has a radially inner dimension and the second tube has a radially outer dimension permitting close sliding engagement of an end of the second tube within an end of the first tube. The connection includes staked segments spaced apart circumferentially about the first and second tube side walls. Each staked segment includes simultaneously formed projections formed by a staking or piercing knife in the side walls of both tubes.

Tube-to-tube connection

A muffler which does not require a low-frequency Helmholtz resonator includes an outer shell and first and second heads for closing the inlet and outlet ends, respectively, of the shell. First, second and third baffles are disposed internally of the shell and extend transversely therein. An outlet end chamber is defined between the inlet head and first baffle. A second chamber is defined between the first and second baffles. A third chamber is defined between the second and third baffles. An inlet end chamber is defined between the third baffle and outlet head. An inlet conducting tube extends longitudinally of the shell through the inlet head and the first, second and third baffles and opens into the inlet end chamber. An outlet conducting tube extends through the outlet head and the first, second and third baffles and opens into the outlet end chamber. An aperture in the first baffle acoustically couples the outlet end chamber and second chamber. An aperture in the third baffle acoustically couples the inlet end chamber and third chamber. One or more apertures in the second baffle acoustically and resistively couple the second and third chambers.
