A monitoring device for monitoring a risk of drowning for users of one or more alarm devices is provided. The alarm devices include one or more detectors configured to detect status data of the user, and the alarm device transmits a signal from at or below a water surface. A monitoring station has a controller circuit configured to receive status data from the alarm device, to detect a triggering event, and, in response to the triggering event, to select one of a plurality of alarm protocols based on the status data. The monitoring station is configured to provide a user alert to the alarm device if a loss in signal strength of the alarm device is detected by the monitoring station, and the alarm device is configured to receive a deactivation input such that if a deactivation input is received within a predetermined time, the alarm protocol is canceled and/or an alarm protocol is not issued to the monitoring station.

Water safety monitoring devices, alarm devices and related methods

A system for reducing a risk of drowning in a pool includes a pool monitoring unit and a swim monitoring station. The pool monitoring unit is switchable between an activated state and a deactivated state. The pool monitoring unit is configured to detect entrance into the pool and/or movement in the pool and to output an alarm signal in response a detected entrance into the pool and/or movement in the pool when in the activated state. The swim monitoring station is configured to wirelessly communicate with one or more wearable alarm devices and the swim monitoring station is in wireless communication with the pool monitoring unit. The swim monitoring station is switchable between an off state and an on state. In the on state, the swim monitoring station is configured send a wireless signal to the pool monitoring unit to deactivate the pool monitoring unit.

A method for detecting a presence of an object in an image comprising a pool region includes receiving an infrared image from an image sensor; identifying an area of substantially homogeneous temperature and having an outer perimeter; defining the pool region in the infrared image in response to the identified area of substantially homogeneous temperature and having an outer perimeter; identifying an object in the infrared image; and triggering an alarm in response to a predefined change in position of the object with respect to the pool region.

A user interface unit is configured to convey the selected alarm protocol to the user.

A water alarm device for releaseable attachment to a user in a body of water includes a buoyant alarm unit having a water sensor. The water sensor is configured to sense if a sensing portion of the alarm unit is in contact with water. A timer is in communication with the water sensor and is configured to determine a duration of water contact with the sensing portion of the alarm unit. The alarm unit is configured to travel to a surface of the body of water and activate an alarm when the duration of water contact is greater than a predetermined time.

A water alarm device for releaseable attachment to a user in a body of water includes a buoyant alarm unit having a water sensor. The water sensor is configured to sense if a sensing portion of the alarm unit is in contact with water. A release unit is configured to releasably attach the alarm unit to the user. A timer is in communication with the water sensor and is configured to determine a duration of water contact with the sensing portion of the alarm unit. The release unit is configured to release the alarm unit from the user when the duration of water contact is greater than a predetermined time, and the alarm unit is configured to travel to a surface of the body of water and activate an alarm when the alarm unit is released from the user.
