The invention provides an antimicrobial personal cleansing composition comprising: (i) an aqueous continuous phase including one or more anionic cleansing surfactants; (ii) a dispersed phase including dispersed particles of zinc pyrithione (ZPT); (iii) a structuring polymer for the aqueous continuous phase which is selected from crosslinked alkali-swellable acrylic emulsion (ASE) polymers; and (iv) from 3 to 20 wt % niacinamide based on the total weight of the composition, wherein the structuring polymer is selected from crosslinked copolymers of (meth)acrylic acid with one or more C1 to C5 alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid.

Antiperspirant emulsions which exhibit excellent phase stability even in the presence of an effective concentration of antiperspirant salts in solution and which are thickened are obtainable by dispersing a hydratable polymer and particularly an amphoteric or cationic modified starch in an aqueous emulsion forming a viscous emulsion, often at an elevated temperature, subjecting the emulsion to high shear, thereby reducing the droplet size of the dispersed oil phase, bringing the emulsion to below 40&deg; C. and introducing the antiperspirant, preferably in aqueous solution. The viscous emulsion subjected to high shear mixing desirably has a Sheer Stress of 10 to 500 Pa. The resultant emulsions show good phase stability even when they contain aluminium/ zirconium antiperspirant salts that promote instability and even at elevated storage temperatures such as at 50&deg; C.

A personal care composition in the form of an aqueous liquid comprises: i) a lipid composition comprising three components A, B and C, where A is a molecule having at least two hydrocarbon chains and a polar head group for which ##EQU1## B is a molecule having one long chain and a polar head group; and C comprises a compound capable of assisting the formation of lipid bilayers and stabilizing any lipid bilayers formed in the lipid composition; and the molar ratio of A:B:C is 1.0:1.5 to 6.0:1.1 to 8.0; ii) a surface active agent selected from anionic, nonionic, cationic, zwitterionic, amphoteric surface active agents, soap and mixtures thereof; and iii) a deposition aid.
