Transmitting a bidirectional, virtual differential signal in addition to other differential signals over physical communication channels. Thus, four signal lines can provide three differential signals, where the virtual differential signal is bidirectional. The virtual differential signal can be provided over one or more of the other physical communication channels. Additional configurations allow for providing a bidirectional DC power supply. Additional configurations allow for providing DC power in addition to data over a reduced number of lines. Selective switching of signal lines can allow backward and forward interoperability with other standard interfaces.

Techniques and mechanisms for determining an operation mode of an audio-video (AV) device. In an embodiment, communication logic of the AV device may be configured at different times for different ones of a plurality of operation modes including an AV source operation mode for providing AV information to another device and an AV sink operation mode for receiving AV information from another device. In response to a detected event, control logic initializes the communication logic of the AV device into a default mode which prevents operation of the communication logic as an AV source.

An embodiment of an apparatus includes an apparatus that includes one or more ports, the one or more ports including one or more adaptable ports, where each adaptable port includes a receptacle to accept a plug of a connector element, the receptacle including multiple electrical contacts. The apparatus further includes an adaptable port device to process data including multimedia data received at the one or more adaptable ports, where the adaptable port device is to detect a multimedia signal format for multimedia data received at each of the adaptable ports, and adapt each of the adaptable ports to be compatible with the detected multimedia signal format for the adaptable port.

Transmission of alternative content over standard device connectors. An embodiment of a method includes connecting a first device to a second device utilizing a standard connector, the connector including multiple pins, and detecting whether the second device is operating in a standard mode or an alternative mode. If the second device is operating in the alternative mode, then switching one or more pins of the standard connector for the alternative mode and transmitting or receiving signals for the alternative mode via the plurality of pins of the standard connector.
