In an example, a method can include receiving, at a merchant-facing portion of a payment system, data from a customer-facing portion of the payment system indicating a payment transaction between a merchant and a customer, wherein there is a physical connection between the portions; determining that the payment system is unable to access a remote payment service system via an external network; determining that the payment transaction is not preapproved for payment by the remote payment service system; storing the payment transaction on the merchant-facing portion even though the payment transaction is not preapproved; determining that the payment system is able to access the remote payment service system via the external network; and transmitting transaction information including the stored payment transaction to the remote payment service system, via the external network, for processing the stored payment transaction.

Transaction processing by multiple devices

Techniques associated with a customer-facing device and a merchant-facing device are described herein. In an example, a system can include a customer-facing device configured with a customer application that is executable on an operating system of the customer-facing device to (i) display information to a customer and (ii) receive input from the customer, wherein the customer-facing device includes a payment reader to read payment data from a payment instrument in association with a payment transaction between the customer and a merchant, and a merchant-facing device configured with a merchant application that is executable on an operating system of the merchant-facing device to (i) display information to the merchant and (ii) receive input from the merchant. In at least one example, the customer-facing device and the merchant-facing device can communicate to process, at least in part, the payment transaction associated with the payment instrument via a remote payment service system.

Introduced is a technology for processing transactions on behalf of a merchant employing a legacy system, where the processing includes managing inventory data and bundle pricing data associated with transactions occurring at various point-of-sale (POS) devices that include both legacy and non-legacy POS devices. Briefly described, the technology involves a payment processing system (PPS) working in coordination with a legacy merchant system. The PPS includes a payment processing database system, a adapter module installed at the merchant system, and a payment processing engine installed at a cloud-based server system. The payment processing engine, via the adapter module, can receive the most up-to-date inventory data and bundle pricing rules from the legacy merchant system. Based on the bundle pricing rules, the payment processing engine can compute one or more minimum-price carts that apply pricing discounts to eligible items for transactions occurring at the POS device(s) associated with the PPS.

This disclosure describes techniques for intelligent payment capture in mixed fulfillment transactions. For example, the techniques described herein may include generating a purchase ticket associated with multiple items in a mixed fulfillment transaction. The purchase ticket may facilitate conducting a mixed fulfillment transaction in which a payment instrument is authorized for the cost of the multiple items in the mixed fulfillment transaction, with partial payment captures being made as items are fulfilled without requiring additional authorizations.

Techniques and arrangements for providing payment protection to merchants who utilize point-of-sale (POS) devices that are configured to conduct transactions in both online and offline modes. In an offline mode, a POS device of a merchant stores information regarding a payment instrument used in a transaction between the merchant and a customer, for later sending of the information to a payment service for authorization of the payment instrument when the POS device is in the online mode. The described techniques protect the merchant in a situation where a payment instrument used in an offline transaction is later declined, by providing payment to the merchant for at least a portion of the cost associated with the transaction.

A point-of-sale system includes a computing device, such as a mobile phone or tablet, and a payment object reader communicatively coupled to the computing device that is used to acquire data from a payment object reader. The payment object reader includes an optical output device. The brightness of the optical output device is controlled by the payment object reader depending on the brightness of the computing device coupled to the payment object reader. The brightness level of the optical output device of the payment object reader, which can be a near field communication (NFC) signal strength indicator having four light-emitting-diodes (LEDs), is coordinated to the brightness level of the computing device.

Techniques and arrangements for dynamically modifying an order of a cardholder verification method (CVM) implemented at a point-of-sale (POS) device. In some instances, the techniques instruct a POS device to determine a card network or other attributed associated with a received payment instrument and determine, based on this information, whether to implement a default order of a CVM or whether to modify the order of the CVM such that the POS device requests different verification information than if the POS device did not modify the order of the CVM.

Dynamically configuring verification information at point-of-sale devices

Information regarding a redemption code may include at least one parameter associated with certain redeemable content. Requests may be received from a user. The request may concern access to redeemable content associated with a redemption code. The applicability of parameters is determined as is the redeemable content associated with the identified parameter. The user may then be granted access to the identified redeemable content. The determination of applicable parameters may include identifying an associated modification and applying the modification to the redemption code in order to identify the redeemable content.
