A water-soluble composition includes reducible copper ions or copper nanoparticles complexed with a reactive polymer. The reactive polymer can be crosslinked using suitable irradiation to provide copper-containing water-insoluble complexes. The water-soluble composition can be used to provide various articles and electrically-conductive materials that can be assembled in electronic devices. The reactive polymer has greater than 1 mol % of recurring units comprising sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups, at least 5 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant group capable of crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition, and optionally at least 1 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant amide, amine, hydroxyl, lactam, phosphonic acid, or carboxylic acid group.

Copper-containing articles

A method of inkjet printing includes ink jetting an aqueous inkjet ink composition to form a white printed image on a substrate. The aqueous inkjet ink composition comprises particles of titanium dioxide that are present in an amount of at least 4 to 15 weight % and the particles have a 95percentile particle size of less than 200 nm and a 50percentile particle size of less than 130 nm. The titanium dioxide particles are dispersed within the aqueous inkjet ink composition using a dispersing polymer that is a styrene-(meth)acrylic acid polymer, styrene-maleic anhydride polymer, or styrene-maleic acid polymer and the weight ratio of the titanium dioxide particles to the dispersing polymer is from 19:1 to and including 2:1.

Method for ink jetting opaque ink composition

An interfacial electric field intensity of a surface is measured by covalently binding a monolayer of a voltage sensitive chromophore to the surface and irradiating it with actinic radiation while it is in contact with a liquid and measuring a first fluorescence emission spectrum. A solution of the voltage sensitive chromophore dissolved in a sample of the liquid is also irradiated with actinic radiation and a second fluorescence emission spectrum is measured. The first and second fluorescence emission spectra are compared to determine the interfacial electric field intensity.

Method for measuring solid-liquid interfacial electric field

An aqueous dispersion contains pigment colorant particles that are present in an amount of at least 5 weight % and up to and including 80 weight %; a dispersing polymer that is a hexyloxy benzoic acid polymer; and an aqueous medium. The weight ratio of the pigment colorant particles to the dispersing polymer is from 19:1 to and including 2:1. Such aqueous dispersions can be incorporated into aqueous inkjet ink compositions that can be used for forming opaque images such as white images using inkjet printing methods.

A characteristic difference between first and second liquids is measured using a surface having a monolayer of a voltage sensitive chromophore that is covalently bound to the surface. The first liquid is brought into contact with the surface and it is irradiated with actinic radiation to measure a first fluorescence emission spectrum. The second liquid is also brought into contact with the surface and it is irradiated with actinic radiation to measure a second fluorescence emission spectrum. The first and second fluorescence emission spectra are compared to characterize a difference between the first and second fluids.

Method for determining a characteristics difference between fluids

A method is used to provide an electrically-conductive polyaniline pattern by providing a uniform layer of a photocurable composition on a substrate. The photocurable composition comprises a water-soluble reactive polymer comprising (a) greater than 40 mol % of recurring units comprising sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups, and (b) at least 5 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant group capable of crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition. The photocurable composition is exposed to cause crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition of the (b) recurring units, thereby forming a crosslinked polymer. Any remaining water-soluble reactive polymer is removed. The crosslinked polymer is contacted with an aniline reactive composition having aniline monomer and up to 0.5 molar of an aniline oxidizing agent, thereby forming an electrically-conductive polyaniline disposed either within, on top of, or both within and on top of, the crosslinked polymer.

Method of preparing article with polyaniline coating

A characteristic of a liquid is measured by providing a surface having a monolayer of a voltage sensitive chromophore that is covalently bound to the surface. The liquid is brought into contact with the surface and it is irradiated with actinic radiation to measure a first fluorescence emission spectrum. A solution of the voltage sensitive chromophore dissolved in a sample of the liquid is also irradiated with actinic radiation and a second fluorescence emission spectrum is measured. Ink jettable and UV-curable compositions include a reactive polymer comprising: (a1) at least 20 mol % of recurring units comprising pendant metal complexing water-solubilizing groups, and (b) at least 5 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant group capable of crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition. The compositions can optionally have a humectant, a dye or pigment colorant, an anionic or nonionic surfactant, a water-soluble or water-dispersible acrylic polymer, or a water-soluble or water-dispersible polyurethane. Such ink jettable and UV-curable compositions can include a complex of reducible metal ions or metal nanoparticles with the reactive polymer.

This aqueous dispersion can be incorporated into an aqueous inkjet ink composition that can be used in various inkjet printing methods to provide opaque images particularly when titanium dioxide particles are used as the pigment colorant.

A method is used to provide an electrically-conductive polyaniline patterns on a substrate. A photocurable composition is applied as a pattern, comprising a water-soluble reactive polymer comprising (a) greater than 40 mol % of recurring units comprising sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups, (b) at least 5 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant group capable of crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition. The pattern is exposed to radiation sufficient to cause crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition of the (b) recurring units to form a pattern of crosslinked polymer. The crosslinked polymer is contacted with an aniline reactive composition comprising an aniline monomer and up to 0.5 molar of an aniline oxidizing agent, in a molar ratio of from 1:0.5 to 1:1.5 of the aniline monomer to the aniline oxidizing agent. A pattern of electrically-conductive polyaniline disposed within, on top of, or both within and on top of, the crosslinked polymer only.

Method of preparing article with polyaniline pattern

A precursor article has a substrate and a polymeric layer having a reactive composition that contains a non-crosslinked thiosulfate copolymer comprising: (a) recurring units comprising pendant thiosulfate groups, and (b) recurring units comprising pendant carboxy, carboxylate, phospho, phosphonate, phosphate, sulfo, sulfonate, or sulfite groups. The (a) recurring units are present in an amount of 1 to 30 mol %, and the (b) recurring units are present in an amount of 70 to 99 mol %. This precursor article can be used to provide a product article comprising a substrate in which the polymeric layer has both exposed regions and non-exposed regions. The exposed regions contain a pattern of electrolessly plated metal within or deposited on the surface of an at least partially crosslinked polymer that has been derived from the non-crosslinked thiosulfate copolymer. The non-exposed regions have none of the electrolessly plated metal or the non-crosslinked thiosulfate polymer.

Forming conductive metal patterns using thiosulfate copolymers

Articles are designed with a substrate and have either a uniform layer or pattern of electrically-conductive polyaniline on one or both supporting sides of the substrate. The electrically-conductive polyaniline is disposed either within, on top of, or both within and on top of, a uniform or pattern of a crosslinked polymer that is derived from a photocurable composition comprising water-soluble reactive polymer comprising (a) greater than 40 mol % of recurring units comprising sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups, (b) at least 5 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant group capable of crosslinking via [2+2] photocycloaddition, and optionally (c) at least 1 mol % of recurring units comprising a pendant amide, hydroxyl, lactam, phosphonic acid, phosphonate, carboxylic acid, or carboxylate group, all amounts based on the total recurring units in the water-soluble reactive polymer.

Articles having electrically-conductive layer or pattern

A conductive pattern can be formed using a polymeric layer that contains a reactive composition that comprises a reactive polymer that is metal ion-complexing, water-soluble, and crosslinkable. This reactive polymer comprises photosensitive non-aromatic heterocyclic groups each of these groups comprising a carbon-carbon double bond in conjugation with an electron withdrawing group, as well as metal ion-complexing and water solubilizing groups. The reactive composition can be patternwise exposed to suitable radiation to induce crosslinking within the reactive polymer. The reactive composition and reactive polymer in the non-exposed regions can be removed due to their aqueous solubility, but the exposed regions of the polymeric layer are contacted with electroless seed metal ions, which are then reduced. The resulting electroless seed metal nuclei are electrolessly plated with a suitable metal to form the desired conductive pattern. Various articles can be prepared during this process, and the product article can be incorporated into various electronic devices.

Forming conductive metal patterns using water-soluble polymers

An inkjet printing fluid for printing systems employing recirculating printing fluids is described. The printing fluid including water, colorants, and an acrylic latex polymer that includes repeating units of alkylene oxide groups.
