A low profile smart antenna includes an active antenna element carried by a dielectric substrate, and active antenna element has a T-shape. Passive antenna elements are carried by the dielectric substrate, and they have an inverted L-shaped portion laterally adjacent the active antenna element. Impedance elements are selectively connectable to the passive antenna elements for antenna beam steering.

Low profile smart antenna for wireless applications and associated methods

Operating parameters of a planar antenna are controlled by providing a planar metal radiating element having an edge, by providing a slot within the radiating element, the slot having side walls, an open slot-end that lies on the edge of the radiating element, and a closed slot-end the lies within the radiating element, and by providing a thin, line-like, and metal segment, at least a portion of which is coplanar with the radiating element and that extends from the open slot-end to the closed slot-end without physically engaging the slot's side walls. The metal segment can be connected to the antenna's ground plane to thereby form a parasitic element, or the metal segment can be connected to the radiating element to thereby form an extension of the radiating element.

Optimum Utilization of slot gap in PIFA design

A smart antenna includes an active antenna element, a passive antenna element laterally adjacent the active antenna element, and an impedance element selectively connectable to the passive antenna element for antenna beam steering. A ground plane includes a center portion adjacent the active antenna element, and first and second arms extending outwardly from the center portion. The first arm is connected to the impedance element, and the second arm is laterally adjacent the first arm.

Compact smart antenna for wireless applications and associated methods

The present invention provides, an antenna test device to test antenna efficiency. The test device includes a cavity formed by at least one conductive sidewall. The cavity contains at least one tuning probe, at least one movable portion, or a combination thereof. The tuning probes and/or movable portion help inhibit the antenna under test from having faulty measurements due to anti resonance or coupling.

Antenna efficiency test device

The present invention provides a method to measure antenna efficiency using the cavity method. In particular, the present invention provides a tunable cavity that can be tuned to avoid the anti resonance and antenna-cavity coupling problems. In particular, tuning probes and/or variable volumetric sizing of the cavity are used to tune the cavity to avoid the anti resonance and antenna-cavity coupling.

Method and apparatus to control an antenna efficiency test device

Printed circuit techniques and two-shot molding techniques are used to form a metal radiating element, a metal ground plane element, a metal antenna feed, a metal short-circuiting strip and metal capacitive loading plates within small antennas that are buried within transmit/receive radio-devices such a mobile cellular telephones. Balanced and unbalanced, single-feed, two and three band antennas are provided wherein the radiating element is laterally spaced from the ground plane element, to thereby provide an antenna having a very low profile or height, including antennas wherein the ground plane element and the radiating element are placed coplanar on the same surface of a PCB. A thin dielectric carriage on a PCB allows for the metal capacitive loading plates to be placed on the sidewalls of the dielectric carriage, to thereby provide reactive loading of a radiating element that is on the top surface of the dielectric carriage.

Compact, low profile, single feed, multi-band, printed antenna

An internal antenna for wireless devices comprising a ground plane and a planar loop antenna. The shorted loop antenna is provided with a gap and operates at a quarter wavelength. The compact single feed dual or multi band internal antenna is realized either through composite assembly of an active outer and inner radiating elements or by a selective combination of an active outer radiating element and a parasitic inner radiating element. The inner radiating element of the proposed invention is completely encompassed within the outer radiating element. The resonant tuning of the internal antenna is accomplished by means of the matching stub and capacitive loading plates with the matching stubs being entirely internal to the outer radiating element.

Antenna with shorted active and passive planar loops and method of making the same

A Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) comprising a radiating element, a ground plane located below the radiating element; a through hole located at a position corresponding to the radiating element, a power feeding connector pin at a position corresponding to the radiating element; a through hole at a position corresponding to the radiating element; a conductive shorting post (pin) located at a position corresponding to the radiating element; a right side vertical plane formed along the edge of the radiating element; a left side vertical plane formed along the other edge of the radiating element; a lower horizontal plane formed by bending the left side vertical plane; a slot on the radiating element; and a dielectric block located in the area between the lower horizontal plane and the ground.

Design of single and multi-band PIFA

A unitary assembly provides two virtual planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) within a physical volume that is occupied by one of the PIFAs. The virtual two-antenna assembly includes a single RF feed, and provides multiple frequency response in the AMPS, PCS, GSM, DCS and GPS frequency bands. A composite radiating element is supported above a ground plane. A C-shaped slot divides the composite radiating element into an outer radiating element and an inner radiating element. Two metal stubs within a slot-discontinuity of the C-shaped slot physically and electrically connect the outer radiating element to the inner radiating element. An RF feed post connects to the outer radiating element, and both of the inner and outer radiating elements are shorted to the ground plane. One metal stub provides virtual RF feed to the inner radiating element, the other metal stub provides a matching and/or tuning function to the inner radiating element, and the two metal stubs provide a matching and/or tuning function to the outer radiating element. The outer radiating element includes an L-shaped slot, and the inner radiating element includes a linear slot. Reactive loading plates extend from the composite radiating element toward the ground plane.

Single-feed, multi-band, virtual two-antenna assembly having the radiating element of one planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) contained within the radiating element of another PIFA

Single feed planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) are provided for three, four or five frequency bands of resonance in both cellular and non-cellular frequency bands. The PIFAs include a dielectric carriage having a metal radiating element located on a top surface thereof and sidewalls having a metal ground plane element located at the bottom of the sidewalls. The non-radiating edge of the radiating elements include a downward extending shorting strip that is connected to the ground plane element and a downward extending feed strip that is spaced above the ground plane element and is connected to a feed cable. The radiating element includes downward extending matching and loading plates whose free ends are spaced above the ground plane element, which provide impedance matching and reactive loading to the radiating elements. Configurations of slots (open and closed) within the radiating elements selectively provide multiple frequency resonance to the radiating elements in both cellular and non-cellular frequency bands.

Planar Inverted-F-Antenna (PIFA) having a slotted radiating element providing global cellular and GPS-bluetooth frequency response

This invention presents new and alternative design techniques of single feed Dual/Tri ISM band PIFA for wireless system applications. To attain the advantages of and in accordance with the purpose of the present invention, dual and/or tri ISM band PIFA antennas are provided. In particular, an antenna comprises at least a ground plane, a radiating element, a short, and a feed tab. The short provides a connection between the ground plane and the radiating element. The feed tab connected to the radiating element provides RF power and provides initial impedance match. While the feed tab provides initial impedance match, additional impedance match and frequency control are obtained by the inclusion of one or more of a parasitic element, a slot, tuning stubs, and capacitive elements.

Narrow width dual/tri ISM band PIFA for wireless applications

The present invention relates to a non-rectangular shaped PIFA capable of dual ISM band operation using a single power feed. The dual frequency operation of the PIFA is accomplished by using a slot in the radiating element to quasi partition the radiating element. The dual band performance of the PIFA is realized through the integration of either the microstrip or the Co Planar Waveguide (CPW) feed line to the antenna structure.

Compact dual band circular PIFA

A three-band, two-antenna, assembly includes a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) having a radiating/receiving element that is spaced from and extends generally parallel to a ground plane element. The planar radiating/receiving element of an inverted-F antenna (IFA) is located in an open space that exists between the radiating/receiving element of the PIFA and the ground plane element. The radiating/receiving element of the IFA extends either perpendicular to, or parallel to, the radiating/receiving element of the PIFA. The radiating/receiving element of the PIFA includes one or more open slot configurations that operate to provide dual resonant frequencies for the IPFA (AMPS/PCS or GSM/DCS). The radiating/receiving element of the IFA operates in a non-cellular frequency band (ISM or GPS).

Dual feel multi-band planar antenna

A multi-band antenna including a retractable antenna and a meander antenna wherein the meander antenna may take several forms. In all of the embodiments, the meander antenna comprises first and second meander radiating elements. In one form of the invention, the closed ends of the loops of the second meander radiating element protrude into the open ends of the loops of the first meander radiating element. In other forms of the invention, active and/or passive elements are positioned between the first and second meander radiating elements. In some forms of the invention, the active or passive elements include stubs which protrude into the open ends of the loops of the first meander radiating element.
