A method includes detecting a determined operating condition of a first power converter that is one of a plurality of first power converters in a power generating unit, and the power generating unit is one of a plurality of power generating units. The method further includes responding to detection of the determined operating condition by: controlling, via at least one remaining first power converter of the plurality of first power converters, a load current flowing through a power bus coupled to the plurality of power generating units, and altering one or more droop characteristics corresponding to one or more second power converters disposed in other power generating units based at least in part on the controlled load current flowing through the power bus, wherein the one or more second power converters disposed in other power generating units are coupled to the power bus.

Power generation system and associated method

A power system is disclosed. The power system includes a first power generating unit. The first power generating unit includes a first power converting subunit and a first control unit coupled to the first power converting subunit, where the first control unit is configured to regulate a voltage of the first power generating unit. The power system further includes a second power generating unit coupled to the first power generating unit and a load, where the second power generating unit includes a second power converting subunit and a second control unit coupled to the second power converting subunit, wherein the second control unit is configured to control a current of the second power generating unit to share a quantity of electrical output current flowing through the load among the first and second power generating units.

Accordingly, the electrical system includes a plurality of electrical subsystems having a plurality of electrical subsystem assemblies. At least one electrical subsystem assembly is integrated with the generator housing. Additionally, the electrical subsystem assembly is coupled between the stator or the rotor of the generator and the generator output connection. The electrical system incorporating the electrical subsystem assembly with the generator housing has a reduced uptower footprint relative to a nominal design of an electrical system.

Wind turbine electrical system having redistributed components reducing the overall footprint of the electrical system

A system and method are provided for controlling a wind turbine. Accordingly, a controller of the wind turbine detects a loss of traction of the slip coupling between a generator and a rotor of the drivetrain of the wind turbine. In response to detecting the loss of traction, the controller overrides a generator torque setpoint to alter a rotational speed of the generator. In response to the altered rotational speed of the generator, the traction of the slip coupling is increased. Increasing the traction of the slip coupling facilitates an application of generator torque to the drivetrain of the wind turbine.

System and method for controlling a wind turbine

A system and method are provided for controlling a wind turbine to protect the wind turbine from anomalous operations. Accordingly, in response to receiving data indicative of an anomalous operational event of the wind turbine, the controller initiates an enhanced braking mode for the wind turbine. The enhanced braking mode is characterized by operating the generator at a torque setpoint that generates maximum available torque for a given set of operating conditions. Additionally, the torque setpoint is in excess of a nominal torque limit for the generator.

A method for controlling an electrical power system connected to a power grid includes receiving a reactive power command and a measured reactive power and generating a reactive power error signal based on a difference between the reactive power command and the measured reactive power. Further, the method includes receiving, via a reactive power regulator, the reactive power error signal. Moreover, the method includes generating, via the reactive power regulator, a voltage command based on the error signal. The method also includes generating, via a droop control, a voltage droop signal. In addition, the method includes generating a voltage error signal as a function of the voltage droop signal and at least one of the voltage command or a measured terminal voltage. Thus, the method further includes generating, via a voltage regulator, a reactive current command based on the voltage error signal.

Systems and methods for controlling electrical power systems connected to a power grid

A power system including at least one electrical machine, plurality of doubly fed induction machines (DFIMs), a plurality of first power converters, and a speed regulation unit is presented. The electrical machine includes a mechanical input end and at least one of a first stator winding terminal and a first rotor winding terminal. Each DFIM includes a second stator winding terminal, a second rotor winding terminal, and a mechanical output end. At least one of the first stator winding terminal and the first rotor winding terminal is coupled to one of first power converters and the second rotor winding terminal of each DFIM is coupled to one of the first power converters. The speed regulation unit is coupled to at least one of the mechanical input end and the mechanical output end.

A hybrid power generation system is presented. The hybrid power generation system includes a generator operable via a prime mover and configured to generate an alternating current (AC) power. The hybrid power generation system further includes a first power converter electrically coupled to the generator, where the first power converter includes a direct current (DC) link. Furthermore, the hybrid power generation system includes a DC power source configured to be coupled to the DC-link. Moreover, the hybrid power generation system also includes a second power converter. Additionally, the hybrid power generation system includes an integration control sub-system operatively coupled to the first power converter and the DC power source. The integration control sub-system includes at least one bypass switch disposed between the DC power source and the DC-link and configured to connect the DC power source to the DC-link via the second power converter or bypass the second power converter.

An electrical power system connectable to a power grid includes a cluster of electrical power subsystems, each of the electrical power subsystems including a power converter electrically coupled to a generator having a generator rotor and a generator stator. Each of the electrical power subsystems defines a stator power path and a converter power path for providing power to the power grid. Each of the electrical power subsystems further includes a transformer. The system further includes a subsystem breaker configured with each of the electrical power subsystems, and a cluster power path extending from each subsystem breaker for connecting the cluster of electrical power subsystems to the power grid. The system further includes a reactive power compensation inverter electrically coupled within the electrical power system, the reactive power compensation inverter operable to increase the reactive power level in the electrical current flowing to the power grid.

A method for reactive power control of a wind farm having a plurality of clusters of wind turbines with a cluster transformer connecting each cluster of wind turbines to a power grid is provided. The method includes receiving, via a plurality of cluster-level controllers, a reactive power command from a farm-level controller. The method also includes generating, via the cluster-level controllers, a cluster-level reactive current command for each cluster of wind turbines based on the reactive power command. Further, the method includes distributing, via the cluster-level controllers, a turbine-level reactive current command to turbine-level controllers of the wind turbines based on the cluster-level reactive current command.

Systems and methods of wind power generation in electrical power systems are described. According to one aspect, a wind turbine system can include a down tower portion having a main transformer configured to transform medium voltage power to another voltage power, a tower portion having one or more medium voltage cables configured to transmit medium voltage power, and, a nacelle portion. The nacelle portion can include a generator comprising a stator and a rotor. The stator may be connected to one or more medium voltage cables via a stator power path. The nacelle portion also includes a power converter coupled to the rotor of the generator, and, a step-up transformer coupled to the power converter and the one or more medium voltage cables. The step-up transformer can be configured to step-up low voltage power to medium voltage power.

System and method for wind power generation and transmission in electrical power systems

A wind farm is presented. The wind farm includes a plurality of wind turbine stations, where each wind turbine station includes a wind turbine and a generator sub-system. The generator sub-system includes a doubly-fed induction generator configured to generate an alternating current voltage and a wind turbine station power converter. The wind farm further includes a power collection sub-system that includes a power bus and a sub-station power converter. The wind farm also includes a control system configured to determine a wind speed metric, estimate a corresponding frequency metric, calculate a desirable frequency based on the wind speed metric and frequency compensation ranges of the wind turbine station power converters, and generate and communicate control commands to the sub-station power converter based on the desirable frequency to allow the sub-station power converter to update a line frequency of a power bus voltage based on the desirable frequency.
