A titanium oxide sol comprising a disperse medium and generally rectangular, non-spherical particles of titanium oxide dispersed in the disperse medium, with narrow scatteres in particle size and configuration. The sol is excellent in dispersibility, long-term stability and light-resistance and, is stable in a wide pH range without causing agglomeration. Moreover, it is excellent in absorbance of ultraviolet ray and in transmittance of visible light. The sol may be prepared by a process wherein hydrogen peroxide is added to a gel or sol of hydrated titanium oxide to dissolve the hydrated titanium oxide in said gel or sol, and the resulting aqueous titanic acid solution is heated in the presence of at least one compound selected from inorganic compounds of metals belonging the Group II, III, IV, V, VI and VIII of the periodic table.

In accordance with the present invention, there are provided coating liquids for forming conductive coatings, which comprise (i) a zirconium oxysalt, (ii) a conductive substance and, if necessary, (iii) at least one member selected from non-sedimentary silica dispersion and silicon alkoxide or its derivative. The coating liquids, when coated on substrates, form thereon transparent conductive coatings which are excellent in transparency, scratch resistance, permanence properties and adhesion to the substrates and, moreover, excellent in antistatic effect. In particular, when the coating liquids for forming conductive coatings mentioned above are coated by the spray method on appropriate substrates followed by drying and/or heating, there are obtained face-plates for display devices, which have excellent regular reflection reducing effect (non-glare) and antistatic effect.

The white particles so prepared may be, after separation, heat treated to provide black particles. The white or black particles may be coated with a synthetic resin in the surface. The products are useful particularly as spacers for liquid crystal display devices.

An improvement in a process which comprises feeding a heavy hydrocarbon oil and hydrogen to a fixed bed reactor which is charged with a demetallation catalyst at its upper stage and a hydrotreating catalyst at its lower stage, first contacting said feed stock with the demetallation catalyst under hydrotreating conditions and then contacting the same with the hydrotreating catalyst for the purpose of hydrotreating. The improvement comprises providing at the upper stage of the demetallation catalyst bed a small volume of a premetallation catalyst bed, said premetallation catalyst being lower in the activity than the demetallation catalyst. This predemetallation catalyst bed is charged with a catalyst which comprises one kind or more of metals selected from Group IIB, Group IVB, Group VB, Group VIB and Group VIII supported on a porous inorganic oxide carrier, said metals being 0.2 to 3 wt. % in terms of oxide, and has a pore volume of 0.4 to 1.5 ml/g and a void fraction of 55 vol % or more.
