A system includes a turbine system that contains a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) having a flow path that receives an exhaust gas, and having a fluid path that receives a fluid. The fluid path is adjacent to the flow path such that the fluid is heated by the exhaust gas. The HRSG includes an electrical heater that provides heat to the fluid path during a start-up mode of the HRSG, during a shutdown mode of the HRSG, or both.

Heat recovery steam generator with electrical heater system and method

Embodiments of emission reduction system including various embodiments of an emission filters for a power plant including a gas turbine are disclosed. The system includes: an emission filter; and a retraction system operably coupled to an exhaust passage of the gas turbine. The exhaust passage defines an exhaust path of exhaust from the gas turbine. The retraction system selectively moves the emission filter between a first location within the exhaust path and a second location out of the exhaust path. In a combined cycle power plant, the first location is upstream of a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The systems and filters described allow for temporary positioning of emission filter(s) just downstream of a gas turbine exhaust outlet, or upstream of an HRSG, where provided, for emission reduction at low loads or startup conditions, and removal of the emission filter(s) once operations move to higher loads.

A gas detector and method are presented. The gas detector includes a launcher unit for coupling and merging light beams in mid-infrared and infrared wavelength ranges into a single light beam and directing the merged single light beam towards a gas flow path; a receiver unit for generating at least one photo detector current signal based on the light beam transmitted through the gas flow path; and a control unit for processing at least one photo detector current signal to measure concentration of the at least two gases present in the gas flow path.

Gas detector and method of detection

Systems and methods for controlling exhaust steam temperatures from a finishing superheater are provided. In certain embodiments, the system includes a controller which includes control logic for predicting an exhaust temperature of steam from the finishing superheater using model-based predictive techniques (e.g., based on empirical data or thermodynamic calculations). Based on the predicted exhaust temperature of steam, the control logic may use feed-forward control techniques to control the operation of an inter-stage attemperation system upstream of the finishing superheater. The control logic may determine if attemperation is required based on whether the predicted exhaust temperature of steam from the finishing superheater exceeds a set point temperature as well as whether the inlet temperature of steam into the finishing superheater drops below a set point temperature of steam. The attemperation system may include a characterizing function to linearize the valve operation controlled by the control logic to inject cooled, high-pressure feedwater into the steam upstream of the finishing superheater, which may, in turn, control the exhaust temperature of steam from the finishing superheater. The disclosed embodiments may also be applied to any systems where an outlet temperature of a fluid from a heat transfer device may be controlled.

Inter-stage attemperation system and method

A combined cycle power plant is provided and includes a gas turbine engine to generate power from combustion of a fuel and air mixture, a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) disposed downstream from the gas turbine engine to receive heat energy from the gas turbine engine from which steam is produced, the HRSG including a superheating element and a drum element, and a steam turbine engine to be receptive of the steam produced in the HRSG and to generate power from the received steam, the HRSG further including a valve operably disposed to isolate the superheating element from the drum element when a risk of condensate formation in the HRSG exists.

A system configured to decrease the emissions of a power plant system during transient state operation is disclosed. In one embodiment, a system includes: at least one computing device adapted to adjust a temperature of an operational steam in a power generation system by performing actions comprising: obtaining operational data about components of a steam turbine in the power generation system, the operational data including at least one of: a temperature of the components and a set of current ambient conditions at the power generation system; determining an allowable operational steam temperature range for the steam turbine based upon the operational data; generating emissions predictions for a set of temperatures within the allowable steam temperature range; and adjusting the temperature of the operational steam based upon the emissions predictions.

A method of increasing output of a combined cycle power plant with supplemental duct firing from a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) during select periods includes guiding a reheat steam flow to at least one reheat attemperator fluidly connected to the HRSG during the select period. The method further includes increasing reheat attemperation water flow through the at least one reheat attemperator, decreasing a set point temperature of the at least one reheat attemperator for the select period to a lower set point temperature, and raising power output of the combined cycle power plant during the select period.

Systems and methods involving combined cycle plants

A control system for providing an optimal estimate of NOx emission in an exhaust during a selective catalytic reduction process is provided. The control system includes a continuous emission monitoring sensor configured to generate a responsive signal representing a first estimate of NOx emission; wherein the responsive signal has a first time lag between a time of measurement of NOx emission and the time when the corresponding responsive signal is made available by the continuous emission monitoring sensor, and the continuous emission monitoring sensor has a first time constant. The control system also includes a virtual sensor configured to generate a relatively faster responsive signal representing a second estimate of NOx emission. The control system further includes a processor that includes a time delay compensation circuit configured to introduce a second time lag in the relatively faster responsive signal, wherein the second time lag matches the first time lag. The processor also includes a low pass filter circuit coupled to the time delay compensating circuit, wherein the low pass filter circuit has a second time constant matching the first time constant to generate a time delayed signal representing a third estimate of NOx emission. The processor is further configured to subtract the time delayed signal from the summation of the responsive signal and the relatively faster responsive signal to generate the optimal estimate of the NOx emission, wherein the optimal estimate is fed as a feedforward signal into an injection system in the selective catalytic reduction process.

System and method for obtaining an optimal estimate of NOx emissions

Methods and apparatus for fast starting and loading a combined cycle power system are described. In one example embodiment, the method includes loading the gas turbine at up to it's maximum rate, and loading the steam turbine at its maximum rate with excess steam bypassed to the condenser while maintaining the temperature of steam supplied to the steam turbine at a substantially constant temperature from initial steam admission into the steam turbine until all steam generated by the heat recovery steam generator is being admitted to the steam turbine while the gas turbine operates at up to maximum load.
