A variable purge orifice assembly for an evaporative emission system of a vehicle includes a housing for fluid connection to a vapor canister and a purge solenoid of the evaporative emission system. The housing has a purge orifice therein. The variable purge orifice assembly also includes a regulating device connected to the housing and for connection to an engine of the vehicle. The regulating device is actuated by manifold vacuum from the engine to vary flow of fuel vapor through the purge orifice from the vapor canister to the purge solenoid.

A fuel vapor storage canister having a screen module between carbon granules in the canister and a purge port of the canister. The screen module includes a module body defining a plenum, a flat plastic foam screen seated on an uninterrupted edge of a raised boss on the module body around the plenum, and a retainer clamped to the module body over the flat foam screen. A tubular stem on the module body plugs into a socket in the storage canister. An interference fit between the tubular stem and the socket prevents migration of carbon granules between the socket and the tubular stem. The foam screen is exposed to the carbon bed chamber through a window in a planar side of the retainer which planar side, in a seated position of the retainer on the module body, cooperates with the uninterrupted edge of the raised boss in compressing a segment of the foam screen to define a seal around the window. Hooks on the module body cooperate with resilient loops on the retainer in maintaining the integrity of the seal around the foam screen by preventing release of the retainer from its seated position on the module body.

A purge control device for an evaporative control system comprises a single housing having two solenoid actuated valves controlling parallel orifices leading from an inlet chamber to an exit flow path. The two solenoid valves have different sized orifices to provide different flow capacities. Purge flow is controlled by an electronic control module which regulates the duty cycle of the solenoids. Each valve receives its own signal so that the flow through the orifices is individually controlled.

A vapor storage canister incorporates a liquid trap that protects the carbon bed, but which avoids purging liquid directly out of the trap. The trap consists of a cup that forms an interior cavity at the bottom of, and surrounded by, the carbon bed. The purge tube does not enter the trap directly, but instead runs to a plenum that draws from the bottom face of the carbon bed. The trap, in turn, is open to the interior of the carbon bed only through a screen mesh grid. Consequently, vapor can be pulled from the trap at purge, but not liquid.

A fuel vapor storage canister uses a single canister body and a series of three possible modular liquid fuel trap subassemblies that fit into a trap housing of the canister body so as to allow the assembly to be installed in three differing orientations.

A canister adapted to store fuel vapor discharged from a fuel tank has an inlet chamber that forms a trap for liquid fuel. Fuel is purged from the canister through a purge tube that has a small liquid purge hole at the bottom of the chamber and a large vapor purge hole spaced above the bottom of the chamber.

In an exhaust emission control system for an automotive internal combustion engine, an air control valve assembly either directs air flow provided by an engine driven air pump to the engine exhaust ports or to an exhaust system catalytic converter, or diverts the air flow away from the exhaust system. The air control valve assembly has a single diaphragm with three independent diaphragm valve elements, each operated by the air pump discharge pressure.

An air management valve in the exhaust emission control system for the engine of an automotive vehicle is operative to selectively control secondary air flow to the exhaust manifold next adjacent to the exhaust ports of the engine, to the center of a dual bed catalytic converter and to the atmosphere. The air management valve, adapted to be connected to an engine driven air pump, includes three air pressure operated valves, that is, a port air control valve controlling air flow to the exhaust ports, a proportional air control valve controlling divert air flow to the atmosphere and a pressure relief valve for the pressure relief divert air flow to the atmosphere, a flow control orifice controlling air flow to the converter, a port air control and a solenoid valve arranged to control pressure on one side of the port air control valve, a proportion air control solenoid valve arranged so as to control the flow of exhaust gases to one side of the proportional air control valve whereby to effect operation of this valve as a proportional regulator so as to maintain a constant pressure ratio between air pump pressure and exhaust pressure at the center of the converter.

An electric air control switching valve for use in controlling the delivery of secondary air from an engine driven air pump selectively, as a function of both engine operation and the operation of its associated emission control system, to either the exhaust manifold of an engine, preferably at a location closely adjacent to the exhaust ports of the engine, during low temperature engine operation, to the atmosphere, as at the dirty side of the air cleaner associated with the induction system of the engine, during low temperature engine deceleration, to a converter in the exhaust system for the engine downstream of the exhaust manifold during normal engine operation, or again to the atmosphere, as at the dirty side of the air cleaner, when the converter temperature exceeds a predetermined temperature.

An air switching diverter valve assembly for use with an internal combustion engine to control the flow of secondary air from an air pump, the air switching diverter valve assembly including a housing having a valve chamber therein with an inlet from the air pump to the valve chamber, a first outlet to supply air to the engine exhaust manifold, a second outlet to supply air either to the converter or to the atmosphere, depending on the intended use of the valve in an engine system, and a pressure valve controlled third outlet, a valve movably positioned in the valve chamber for control of flow out through either the first outlet or the second outlet, a switching diaphragm assembly being operatively connected to the valve for actuation thereof and positioned in the housing to form therewith first and second chambers on opposite sides of the switching diaphragm, the second chamber being connected to receive an engine manifold vacuum signal and, a divert timing assembly positioned in the second chamber and attached to one side of the switching diaphragm whereby vacuum leakage from this air switching diverter valve assembly is reduced to a minimum.

In a system for delivering air from an air pump to the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, an air diverter valve assembly has a regulating control responsive to air pump discharge pressure which positions the diverter valve member to divert excess air flow away from the exhaust system when the pressure exceeds a selected value. The assembly also has a timed anti-backfire provision effective to override the regulating control and divert all air flow to the atmosphere upon a sudden decrease in induction manifold pressure.

In a system for delivering air from an air pump to an exhaust system and accessories for an internal combustion engine, an air flow control unit has a high pressure relief valve, an outlet open to the exhaust system, a vent open to the atmosphere and an outlet open to the accessories with a check valve therein. A valve member is movable in response to an engine signal between a first position closing the exhaust system outlet and a second position closing the vent; and a low pressure relief valve is included in the vent to maintain a minimum low pressure in the unit when the valve member is in its first position.
