In the method, a source device places identifiers in data packets to be transmitted. The identifiers may include in-band flow control acknowledgment data in response to a flow control request transmitted from a destination device. When the destination device receives the transmitted data packets, the destination device will proceed based on the data contained in the data packets that are to be decoded at the destination device. If the decoded data packet contains in-band flow control acknowledgment data in response to a flow control request from the destination device, the destination device processes the data packets based on the received in-band flow control acknowledgment data.

In-band flow control methods for communications systems

A method of data communication. The method includes transmitting a control message identifying missing data as lost by the transmitter prior to the expiration of a timer. The missing data may include at least one data packet such that the control message identifies the at least one missing data packet. The control message may include a field and/or an acknowledge sequence number for identifying the missing data packet. The control message also may include a packet data unit having a dummy payload and/or a zero payload. The control message communicates to the receiver that the transmitter has aborted the transmission and/or retransmission of the one or more missing data packets. The control message may be communicated to the receiver over the same data channel used for transmitting the data packets, or alternatively, a wholly different channel than the data channel.

Method of data communication using a control message

In the UMTS, semi-static uplink and downlink connection parameters relating to the frequently-used services of voice, fax and web browsing are intermittently broadcast to mobile user equipment () which stores the parameters. When a mobile requests () one of those services, the relevant dynamic parameters are sent () over the radio interface and the mobile is asked whether it has in its store the relevant parameters for the requested service; if so (), the call is set up; if not (), the semi-static parameters relevant to the requested service are sent () to the user equipment. Considerable saving of radio resource results.
