Disclosed are compounds of formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydroxy, esterified hydroxy or etherified hydroxy;

1-Unsubstituted .beta.-oxo-.alpha.-(phenylcarbamoyl)-.beta.-pyrrolylpropionitriles, e.g. those of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 =H or alkyl, and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 =H, alkyl, alkoxy, OH, halogen or CF.sub.3, are analgesic, and antiarthritic agents. Their synthesis, pharmaceutical compositions thereof, and methods of treatment utilizing such compounds are included.

Certain .beta.-oxo-.alpha.-carbamoylpyrrolepropionitriles

.beta.-Oxo-.alpha.-(heterocyclic substituted carbamoyl)-.beta.-pyrrolyl-propionitriles are antiinflammatory and/or antiarthritic agents with immunomodulating properties. Their synthesis, pharmaceutical compositions thereof, and methods of treatment utilizing such compounds are included.

Certain substituted .beta.-oxo-.alpha.-carbamoylpyrrolepropionitriles

1-Substituted-.beta.-oxo-.alpha.-phenylcarbamoyl-pyrrolpropionitriles, e.g. those of the formula ##STR1## their alkylenol ethers or alkanoylenol esters and salts thereof are antiinflammatory and antiarthritic agents.

Alphacarbamoyl-pyrrolpropionitriles

Substituted 1-phenyl-4-phenylcarbamoyl-2-pyrazolin-5-ones, e.g. those of the formula ##STR1## wherein each of R, R' and R' is alkyl, alkoxy, halo or trifluoromethyl, or at most 2 thereof are hydrogen; or their salts with therapeutically acceptable bases, are anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic agents.
