One RF structure includes a first antenna with a first set of antenna elements disposed on a first plane of a support structure and a second antenna with a second set of antenna elements disposed on a second plane of the support structure. A set of parasitic antenna elements are disposed on the first plane. Two adjacent antenna elements, including one from the first plurality of antenna elements and another one from the plurality of parasitic antenna elements, are separated by the second distance.

Antenna module grounding for phased array antennas

Technologies directed to a radio frequency (RF) structure that provides an electrically insulating gap between a ground plane of a circuit board and a chassis at direct current (DC) and an electrical connection between the ground plane and the chassis at RF frequencies. One RF structure includes a first conductor electrically coupled to the ground plane and a second conductor electrically coupled to the chassis. A physical arrangement of a portion of the first conductor and a portion of the second conductor causes the RF structure to provide an electrically insulating gap between the ground plane and the chassis at DC and an electrical connection between the ground plane and the chassis at RF frequencies.

Technologies directed to coupling structures for antenna feeds of phased array antennas are described. One circuit board includes a first layer with a first portion of a RF coupling structure, a second layer with a second portion of the RF coupling structure, and a first insulation layer located between the first layer and the second layer. The RF coupling structure is configured to electromagnetically couple a first conductive trace on the first layer and a second conductive trace on the second layer at RF frequencies. The circuit board also includes an RF shielding structure coupled to a ground connection on the second layer and located in the first insulation layer. The RF shielding structure is configured to operate as a RF short circuit between the ground connection and a third conductive trace on the first layer at RF frequencies.

Vertical coupling structure for antenna feeds

Technologies directed to interleaved phased array antennas are described. One apparatus includes a support structure, a fist antenna array, and a second antenna array. The first antenna array includes a first set of antenna elements disposed on a surface of the support structure. The first set of antenna elements is spaced apart by a first distance. The second antenna array includes a second set of antenna elements disposed on the surface of the support structure. The second set of antenna elements is located in spaces between the first set of antenna elements on the surface and the second set of antenna elements is spaced apart by a second distance that is less than the first distance.

Interleaved phased array antennas

A communication system can include a support structure, a receiving phased array antenna, and a transmitting phased array antenna that is physically superimposed with the receiving phased array antenna on the support structure. The receiving phased array antenna can include a plurality of receiving antennas and/or transmitting/receiving antennas, and the transmitting phased array antenna can include a plurality of transmitting/receiving antennas and/or transmitting antennas, with at least a subset of transmitting/receiving antennas shared between the two phased array antennas. Appropriate spacing between the antennas of the receiving and transmitting phased array antennas can be achieved by overlaying the transmitting phased array antenna with a rotational offset compared to the receiving phased array antenna, and the different spacing of the antennas in the receiving phased array antenna and the transmitting phased array antenna permits the use of each array in different frequency bands.

One circuit board includes a first layer with a first portion of a RF coupling structure, a second layer with a second portion of the RF coupling structure, and a first insulation layer located between the first layer and the second layer. The circuit board also includes a third layer with a first antenna element and a second insulation layer located between the third layer and the first layer, the second insulation layer including a first via through which the first antenna element is coupled to the first conductive trace.

Characterizing antenna patterns

Apparatuses, methods, and systems for an antenna element are disclosed. For an embodiment, the antenna element includes a feed line layer, a first substrate adjacent to the feed line layer, a ground layer adjacent to the first substrate, a second substrate adjacent to the ground layer, and a third layer adjacent to the second substrate. The feed line layer includes a conductive fork-shape that includes a conductive handle adapted to be electrically connected to a center conductor of a coaxial line, a conductive cross-section that crosses an end portion of the conductive handle, and a plurality of conductive fingers. For an embodiment, a rectangular slot is formed in the ground layer, wherein a length of the rectangular slot is perpendicular to the conductive handle. For an embodiment, the third layer includes four parasitic elements, wherein each parasitic element is electrically connected to the ground layer through a shorting via.

Apparatuses, methods, and systems for beamforming using tunable passive time-delay structures are disclosed. One apparatus includes a node, wherein the node includes a passive time-delay structure, wherein the passive time-delay structure is operative to generate a plurality of delayed signals, wherein each of the plurality of delayed signals is a delayed version of a communication signal, a tunable element, the tunable element operative to introduce a variable delay to the communication signal propagating through the passive time-delay structure, an antenna array, wherein the antenna array generates a beamforming pattern corresponding the passive time-delay structure, and a phase delay adjust control operative to adjust the tunable element of the passive time-delay structure, wherein a direction of the one or more beams of the beamforming pattern changes depending upon tuning of the tunable element.

Tunable passive time-delay structure for adjusting a direction of a beamforming pattern

In one embodiment, a method includes determining a received power at a receiving antenna mounted to an antenna measurement system from a transmitting antenna mounted to a device under test (DUT) in motion relative to the antenna measurement system; determining one or more first orientation parameters of the antenna measurement system; determining one or more second orientation parameters of the DUT; and determining an antenna pattern of the transmitting antenna based on the received power, the first orientation parameters, and the second orientation parameters.

Apparatuses, methods, and systems for beamforming to multiple users using switched passive time-delay structures are disclosed. One method includes an input switch that receives a plurality of input signals for transmission. Further, the apparatus includes a plurality of passive time-delay structures, wherein the input switch selectively connects the plurality of input signals to at least one of the plurality of passive time-delay structures, and wherein each of the passive time-delay structures is preconfigured to provide a plurality of delayed signals wherein each of the plurality of delayed signals is a delayed version of a one of the plurality of input signals. The apparatus further includes an antenna array, wherein the antenna array receives the plurality of delayed signals of the passive time-delay structures, and generates a beamforming pattern corresponding with a selected one of the passive time-delay structures.

Beamforming using passive time-delay structures

Systems and associated methods for adaptive beam aggregation in wireless communications between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground-based stations are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a method for transmitting wireless data between an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a customer premise equipment (CPE) station includes transmitting a first wireless data between a first antenna array and a first CPE station and transmitting a second wireless data between a second antenna array and a second CPE station. The first and second antenna arrays can include one or more individual antennas of the UAV.

Adaptive beam aggregation and split transceiver in unmanned vehicles

Apparatuses, methods, and systems for processing beamforming signals of a passive time-delay structure are disclosed. One apparatus includes a node that includes baseband processing circuitry that is operative to receive and processes transmission signals, a passive time-delay structure that is preconfigured to generate a plurality of output signal, an antenna array, wherein the antenna array is operative to receive and transmit the plurality of output signals of the passive time-delay structure, wherein delays of the passive time-delay structure provide for the formation of a beamforming pattern by the transmitted plurality of output signals, and a controller. The controller is operative to determine a characterization of the beamforming pattern. The baseband processing circuitry operates to process the transmission signals based at least in part on the characterization of the beamforming pattern, and the node transmits the processed transmission signals to the one or more transceivers.

Processsing of beamforming signals of a passive time-delay structure

An electronic device may have an antenna for providing coverage in wireless communications bands of interest such as a low frequency communications band and a high frequency communications band. The antenna may have an antenna ground and an antenna resonating element. The antenna resonating element may have a high band arm that contributes to a first high band resonance in the high band and may have a low band arm that exhibits a low band resonance in the low band. A passive filter that is coupled between first and second portions of the antenna resonating element may be configured to exhibit a short circuit impedance associated with a bypass path that allows the antenna resonating element to contribute to a second high band resonance in the high band. A tunable inductor coupled to the antenna resonating element may be used to tune the low band resonance.
