A thermostatic device for selectively opening and closing one of more apertures used for controlling the flow of a coolant fluid includes a housing, at least one fixed element and at least one moveable element. The at least one fixed element is fixedly interconnected to the housing. The at least one moveable is moveably connected to the housing. A fluid path passes through the fixed element and the moveable element. The fluid path is opened and closed in response to movement of the moveable element relative to the fixed element such that when the moveable element is in a first position the fluid path is closed and when the moveable element is in a second position the fluid path is open. A temperature responsive bi-metal element is coupled to the moveable element for moving the moveable element between the first position and the second position.

Thermostatic device and related method

An oil cooler for a motor vehicle includes a fluid inlet tank and a fluid outlet tank. A plurality of heat transfer tubes provides constant fluid communication between the inlet tank and the outlet tank. A bypass arrangement provides additional fluid communication between the fluid inlet tank and the fluid outlet tank under a first operating condition and the bypass arrangement precludes additional fluid communication between the inlet tank and the outlet tank under a second operating condition. The bypass arrangement may include a bypass tube and an element for selectively blocking the bypass tube. The element for selectively blocking the bypass tube may be automatically response to a change in oil temperature or a change in oil pressure.

Oil cooler

A fluid coupling assembly is provided and includes a stationary housing , which h forms a first chamber ; an inner housing or output member which is rotatably disposed within chamber and which forms a second chamber ; and a rotor or drive member , which is rotatably disposed within chamber . An amount of fluid is contained within chambers and and is used to transmit torque between the rotor and the inner housing . Assembly further includes a pump assembly which is effective to circulate the fluid through assembly . An electrical valve is coupled to housing and is effective to selectively control the flow of fluid into chambers and . A water jacket within housing is used to cool the fluid flowing through assembly . Assembly selectively transmits torque from rotor to housing , thereby driving the rotation of a fan assembly . Valve is selectively actuated according to a predetermined algorithm or program which controls the flow of fluid into rotor and cavity , thereby controlling the torque and rotational speed transmitted to housing from rotor

Fluid coupling assembly

A drive unit for a press uses an oil shear brake and an oil shear clutch which are located axially along the output member of the drive unit. A single piston moves between a brake applied/clutch disengaged position to a brake released/clutch engaged position under the influence of a hydraulic pressure. Cooling and lubrication oil is provided to the drive unit through the output member and lubricating oil is received from the drive member through a stationary support member.

Press drive with oil shear clutch/brake units

A viscous clutch of the magnetorheological fluid type includes an input drive member and an output driven member. A selectively energizable magnetorheological fluid is disposed in a working gap between one cylindrical member on the input member and two cylindrical members on the output shaft. A slip ring configuration on the output member is provided to permit the introduction of electrical energy to a coil assembly disposed on the output member, which coil is energized to establish a magnetic field in the working gap, thereby energizing the magnetorheological fluid. Wiper structures on the input and output members prevent the accumulation and/or centrifugal packing of the iron particles in the magnetorheological fluid adjacent the axial ends of the cylindrical members. A cavity for excess magnetorheological fluid or fluid draining from the working gap is provided between opposed members of the output member. One of the opposed members has an angular wall portion diverging toward the working gap to direct fluid into the working gap when the output member is rotating. The input member includes a finned hub portion rotatably disposed in the cavity to assist in heat transfer from the magnetorheological fluid during clutch operation. A bearing member isolated from the cavity supports the output member on the input member.

Magnetorheological fluid clutch

A viscous fluid clutch includes a rotor attached to an output from an engine, a stator attached to a fan assembly and a coil assembly having at least a portion attached to the stator. A first gap is defined between the rotor and the stator and a second gap is defined between the rotor and the coil assembly. The first and second gaps are filled with a magneto rheological (MR) fluid. The coil assembly creates a magnetic field in the first and second gaps to vary the viscosity of the MR fluid to produce a variable speed viscous fluid clutch. The coil assembly includes coil windings which are supplied with power through a slip ring assembly. Both the coil windings and the wiring between the slip ring assembly and the coil windings are isolated from the magneto rheological fluid.

Viscous clutch assembly

A viscous fluid clutch includes a housing which defines a chamber. A fan assembly is attached to the housing. A rotor is rotatably attached to the housing through a bearing. The bearing is disposed entirely within the chamber at a radially inner portion of the chamber. The viscous fluid is located within a radially outer portion of the chamber. The housing and the rotor form a labryinth passage between the outer portion of the chamber and the inner portion of the chamber. This labryinth passage encourages condensation of any oil vapors that may have formed at the shear point of the viscous fluid.

A clutch/brake drive has a brake unit and a clutch unit. The brake unit and clutch unit each include a plurality of interleaved friction plates. The lubrication for the clutch/brake unit includes a plurality of axial and redial passages formed into the friction plates of both the brake unit and the clutch unit. This ensures continuous and adequate supply of lubricant to the clutch and brake to reduce friction and remove generated heat.

Lubrication system for an oil shear clutch/brake drive

A drive unit for driving a press uses a hydraulically actuated oil shear brake unit located on one side of a flywheel and a hydraulically actuated oil shear clutch unit located on the opposite side of the flywheel. The actuating assemblies for the oil shear brake unit and the oil shear clutch unit are supplied as complete assemblies which are secured to the brake housing and clutch housing, respectively, at the time of assembly of the units to the press. The actuation of the clutch unit and the brake unit occur simultaneously and from the same hydraulic pressure source such that the overlap between the two units is controllable from no overlap to a specified amount of overlap where the brake unit is applied simultaneously with the engagement of the clutch for a specified amount of time. The stroke acquired by the brake and clutch actuating assemblies can each be selected at the time of assembly by selecting the appropriate width for a plurality of spacers.

Press drive with oil shear clutch/brake drives

A drive unit for a press uses an oil shear brake unit and an oil shear clutch unit. The actuation of the brake unit and the clutch unit occurs simultaneously due to a common activation member. The oil cooling system for the drive unit feeds oil to the outer radial or circumferential portion of the drive and returns oil for the central portion of the drive. The reverse flow of oil provides a more consistent supply of cooling oil to remove heat and lubricate the various components of the drive unit to significantly improve the operating performance of the drive.

A control system for a press having a clutch and a brake includes a clutch control valve and a brake control valve. The clutch control valve operates the clutch by supplying pressurized air to the clutch. The brake control valve operates the brake by supplying pressurized hydraulic fluid to the brake. The brake control valve is activated by pressurized fluid from the clutch control valve in order to insure simultaneous release of the brake with engagement of the clutch as well as simultaneous application of the brake with disengagement of the clutch.
