A spring clip cable support assembly for use with a cable comprising of an outer conduit and an inner flexible strand extending through the conduit comprising an inner tubular body having an opening therethrough and a radial flange thereon, a tubular spring clip pressed about a portion of the body, a collar extending about a portion of the spring clip and having a first end engaging the radial flange and second end adapted to engage one side of a support. The spring clip includes spring fingers adapted to engage the other side of the support. The lengths of the contacting portions of body and the spring clip are such that the free edge of the spring clip is spaced from the radial flange and is adapted to be positioned in a plurality of longitudinal positions during assembly to accommodate supports of different thickness. During assembly a spacer of the desired thickness corresponding to that of the intended support is interposed between the second end of the collar and ends of the spring fingers and the collar spring clip and body are interconnected in the desired position as by staking.

The addition of aqueous dilutions of a sulfonic acid source of 0.2% to 0.8% acid concentration to an aggregate or to a composition of asphalt and aggregate in hot asphalt plants enables a decrease in the amount of asphalt required in comparison to compositions not so treated while achieving comparable strengths and durability when the composition is laid down as road paving material. The improved distribution of asphalt reduces usage by 10% to 40% and permits the incorporation of additional finely divided material to achieve higher strengths, or, inversely, to permit a higher percentage of voids to exist in the completed materials so as to provide for a porous paving material with suitable strength. The use of water in quantities of from 1,000 gallons to 3,000 gallons per 100 tons of aggregate and a sulfonic acid source in quantities of from 0.5 to 8 gallons per 100 tons of aggregate to provide an aggregate-acid-water composition having an initial pH of less than 3.5 makes possible a more economical operation of a hot mix plant, a better control over the quality of the end product, a reduction of the dust nuisance usually associated with such operations and a substantial extension of the use of available asphalt supplies. The sulfonic acid source is preferably added to the virgin aggregate during the process of stockpiling, with the treated aggregate allowed to stand for at least about 24 hours at about 55.degree. F., or more.

Acidic asphaltic composition and method

The addition of aqueous dilutions of a sulfonic acid source of 0.2% to 0.8% acid concentration to an aggregate or to a composition of asphalt and aggregate in hot asphalt plants enables a decrease in the amount of asphalt required in comparison to compositions not so treated while achieving comparable strengths and durability when the composition is laid down as road paving material. The use of sulfonic acid sources eliminates the need for adding various fluxing and reclamation agents, petroleum hydrocarbons, oils and asphalt as is standard practice in processes wherein existing asphaltic surfacing is being recycled or reused in hot mix plants, by heater planers and other standard roadbuilding and maintenance equipment as well as in the Mendenhall, Cutler and McConnaughay processes. By utilizing standard roadbuilding and maintenance equipment and supplemental sources of heat, any existing asphaltic surfacing, regardless of thickness or the extent of oxidation or deterioration, may be recycled in situ and reused entirely as new surfacing or, at the discretion of the engineer, used in part as valuable stabilizing material in the base. Paving asphalts may be applied to rock, gravel, sand and soils present in the road bed in conjunction with heat, hot water or steam and a sulfonic acid source so as to achieve compositions satisfactory for use as either paving materials or asphalt stabilized base.

Soil compositions suitable for use as building materials and having significantly improved properties of thermal or energy conductants and energy resistance as well as improved stress, compression, bearing, sound absorbing and structural integrity characteristics comprise a soil combined with cellulose, sodium silicate, and potassium or sodium hydroxide in specific proportions. The composition may also include clay and mineral fillers, depending on the characteristics of the soil.

Earthen cement compositions for building materials and process

An improved earthen composition suitable for building construction comprises soil, a sulfonic acid, cellulose and a cementing agent comprising a calcium cement such as Portland cement, lime or calcium carbonate and/or an asphalt cement such as asphaltic concrete, asphalt, or tar. The compositions are prepared in an aqueous mixture, which is then tamped or consolidated, and dried.

Acidic earthen cemented compositions for building materials and process

A hydrous composition for stabilizing finely divided soils comprises a gum swellable when hydrated, such as sodium alginate; water; and an alcohol, such as methanol, in an amount sufficient to prevent the composition from setting prior to use. The composition is added to finely divided soils in an amount of about 5-25 gallons per foot mile per 6 inch lift. A hardener having a source of calcium, such as CaCl.sub.2, is applied to the soil to harden the composition.

Method of stabilizing soils

Disclosed is a soil stabilizing agent consisting of a source of calcium, such as calcium carbonate, and a source of sulfuric acid, in a water solution and a method for applying the same. Certain chloride and sulfate materials, such as aluminum and ferric chloride and aluminum and ferrous sulfate, may be added to the soil with the stabilizing agent to provide enhanced results in particular soils. The stabilizing agent is applied with sufficient water to thoroughly wet the soil and thus disperse the agent through the soil and the treated soil is then worked to accomplish thorough mixing. An alternate method application is also disclosed in which the calcium source material, and the chloride or sulfate materials if used, are applied dry in powdered or granular form to the soil surface, the soil and materials are treated with a solution of water and a sulfuric acid source sufficient to thoroughly wet the soil to the desired depth of treatment and disperse the chemicals therein, and the chemicals and soil are then worked until thorough mixing is assured.

Soil stabilizing agent comprising a sulfuric acid source-calcium source

Disclosed is a soil stabilizing agent consisting of a source of calcium, such as calcium carbonate, and a spent sulfuric acid having at least about 45% H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, in a water solution and a method for applying the same. Certain chloride and sulfate materials, such as aluminum and ferric chloride and aluminum and ferrous sulfate, may be added to the soil with the stabilizing agent to provide enhanced results in particular soils. The stabilizing agent is applied with sufficient water to thoroughly wet the soil and thus disperse the agent through the soil and the treated soil is then worked to accomplish thorough mixing. An alternate method application is also disclosed in which the calcium source material, and the chloride or sulfate materials if used, are applied dry in powdered or granular form to the soil surface, the soil and materials are treated with a solution of water and a spent sulfuric acid sufficient to thoroughly wet the soil to the desired depth of treatment and disperse the chemicals therein, and the chemicals and soil are then worked until thorough mixing is assured.
