Methods and systems are provided for simple cable phone and internet (SCPI) device that may be coupled with a cable modem (CM) and one or more SCPI head ends, e.g., via an SCPI access point. The CM may be capable of communicating a first modulated signal with a cable modem termination system (CMTS), via the SCPI device. The SCPI device may be capable of combining a second modulated signal to the first modulated signal thereby generating a combined signal. The SCPI device may be capable of sending the combined signal comprising the first modulated signal and the second modulated signal to the CMTS and an SCPI head end. The SCPI head end may be capable of processing the combined signal and extract information and/or data associated with a service. The SCPI head end may deliver the extracted information and/or data to an appropriate gateway.

A device may be capable of communicating using at least two type types of modulation methods. Methods and systems are provided for communication of data according to a communications method in which a master transceiver communicates with one or more slave transceivers according to a master/slave relationship. A first data message may include first information and second information that are modulated according to a first modulation method. The second information may include lower data rate data. A second data message may include third information that may be modulated according to the first modulation method and that may indicate an impending change to a second modulation method. The second modulation method may be used for transmitting fourth information, and the fourth information may be included in the second message. The fourth information may include higher data rate data, for example Internet access data.

The present invention provides for a system and method for blocking leakage signals and uncoupling connections in a communication system. A leakage signal (LS) blocking splitter employs a high-pass filter which effectively blocks the lower frequency leakage signal. The high-pass filter (an LS filter) has a cut-off frequency selected to fall between the upper range of the leakage signal (which is approximately 4 KHz in the preferred embodiment) and the low-end frequency of a data signal. A detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to which each one of the leakage signal (LS) filters are coupled to. The detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to ensure that each LS blocking splitter is coupled to an in-service communication connection. If the communication connection becomes out-of-service, such as when a customer discontinues service with the service provider, the detect and terminate functions automatically uncouple the respective LS filter from the communication connections so that the LS filter cannot introduce undesirable harmonics into the communication system. In an alternative embodiment, the detect and terminate function may insert an impedance matching element in addition to uncoupling the LS filter.

One embodiment is a system comprising: a first communication path for carrying plain old telephone service (POTS) voice signals between a telephone-type device and a subscriber line of a telephone network; a second communication path for carrying derived POTS voice signals between the telephone-type device and the subscriber line; and a switching mechanism configured to switch the telephone-type device between the first communication path and the second communication path.

Systems and methods for integrating analog voice service and derived POTS voice service in a digital subscriber line environment

A device may be capable of communicating using at least two type types of modulation methods. The device may include a transceiver capable of acting as a master according to a master/slave relationship in which communication from a slave to a master occurs in response to communication from the master to the slave. The master transceiver may send transmissions discrete transmissions structured with a first portion and a payload portion. Information in the first portion may be modulated according to a first modulation method and indicate an impending change to a second modulation method, which is used for transmitting the payload portion. The discrete transmissions may be addressed for an intended destination of the payload portion.

The present invention provides a communication device, such as a modem, that is capable of detecting whether it is capable of operating in a mode that is compatible with one or more of the Spectrum Management Classes. The modem automatically selects a mode of operation that is compliant with one or more of the Spectrum Management Classes. The communication device also determines whether it is capable of operating in multiple modes that are compliant with multiple Spectrum Management Classes, and is capable of selecting the modes of operation that optimizes the performance of the communication device. Furthermore, the communication device is capable of determining when it is not capable of operating in a mode that is compliant with at least one of the Spectrum Management Classes and which prevents operation of itself upon determining that it is not capable of operating in a mode that is compliant with at least one of the Spectrum Management Classes.

Method and apparatus for automatic selection and operation of a subscriber line spectrum class technology

Various embodiments are configured to transform characteristics of a communication signal. One embodiment is a method comprising decreasing amplitude of a first detected portion of the communication signal so that the decreased amplitude is in close proximity to a predefined specification; and increasing amplitude of a second portion of the communication signal so that the increased amplitude is in close proximity to the predefined specification, thereby resulting in a transformed communication signal.

The encoder is configured to produce a data-bearing signal with a first PSD. The periodic signal generator is configured to produce a non-data-bearing signal with a second PSD. The present invention provides for a system and method for reducing power consumption in frame and cell data transmission systems. A transmitter power manager powers down (turns off) selected elements of a transmitter system during periods of transmitter inactivity. The transmitter power manager system detects incoming communication signals which are to be transmitted by the transmitter, and at the appropriate time, powers up (turns on) the selected elements which are controlled by the transmitter power manager.

System and method for minimized power consumption for frame and cell data transmission systems

A single subscriber line multi-point communication system is disclosed. In general, the multi-point communication system can include a first transceiver coupled to a subscriber line capable of transmitting and receiving at least two modulation methods, either of said modulation methods being operable to transmit a test signal, and a second transceiver coupled to said subscriber line capable of transmitting and receiving said at least two modulation methods, the second transceiver being operable to receive the test signal and determine at least one channel parameter from the test signal. Indirect digital subscriber line (DSL) service generally involves connecting conversion equipment that converts between DSL service delivered to a customer premises and DSL service that connects back to a data network. Indirect DSL service may be delivered on the same loop to the customer premises that also carries a native 0-4 KHz POTS interface. For larger deployments, the conversion equipment may include inverse multiplexing to combine multiple links back to the data network to support DSL service. Furthermore, the conversion equipment may include functions to digitize the POTS service. Aggregating DSL data from multiple customers and/or digitizing POTS service that may be multiplexed with the DSL data allows for significant pair gain opportunities.

Indirect DSL over loaded and unloaded loops

Systems and methods are provided for communicating data over a subscriber loop using a modem. One such method includes: transmitting data on the loop in a first frequency band; sensing an indication that simultaneous transmission on the loop in a POTS frequency band is imminent; and adjusting transmit power in the first band, in response to the sensing step. One such system includes an input/output connection in communication with the loop, a processor operable in at least two states, a means for sensing demand for simultaneous usage of the loop, and a means for controlling the state. The first state is characterized by a first transmit power spectrum in the first band. The second state is characterized by a second transmit power spectrum in the first band, reduced relative to the first spectrum. Upon sensing demand, the control means causes the processor to operate in the second state.
