A fluid pressure release valve includes an aperture through which fluid can flow. An element is movable to unseal the aperture and to open the valve when a force exerted by the fluid in the valve exceeds a predetermined force. An electromagnetic biasing arrangement biases the element to seal the aperture and hold the valve closed against the escape of fluid with the predetermined force. The applied bias is variable according to changes in the sensed position of the element and a monitoring arrangement, cooperable with the solenoid, monitors the changes in its electrical properties as a shaft moves in the monitoring arrangement, indicating a change in position of the element. The monitoring arrangement also varies the bias to reduce the predetermined force responsive to the sensed change in position of the element indicating an opening of the valve.

A valve for regulating a gas or liquid has a valve housing with an inlet and an outlet. A valve seat is arranged in the valve housing and connects the inlet to the outlet via a valve opening. A valve body facing the valve seat is formed by a band attached at a first fixation point and a second fixation point. The first fixation point is at one end of a lever. An actuator is arranged on the other end of the lever to act on the lever so the distance between the first fixation point and the second fixation point increases. The band is then stretched, and the valve opening is exposed, enabling gas/liquid to flow toward the outlet. When the actuator's action on the lever is regulated, an exact flow of gas/liquid can be regulated.

In a valve having a mechanically journalled movable element for regulating the valve's degree of opening, and in a method for controlling such a valve, the movable element and journals are made to move in relation to each other in order to reduce friction in the journals of the movable element. The movable element is then in a position governed by the valve's prevailing degree of opening.

Method for controlling a valve and an electromagnetic valve

A ventilator system has different sub-systems, such as a connection system, which influence the flow of breathing gas supplied to a patient's respiratory system. The flow pattern of the breathing gas is particularly influenced by the connection system. In order to compensate for this influence to the greatest possible extent in the generation of breathing gas, the connection system's transfer function is determined before the system is connected to the respiratory system. A gas flow with a specific gas flow pattern is generated with high accuracy in a ventilator unit. An ensuing gas flow pattern, only influenced by the connection system, is measured with high accuracy in a measurement unit in the ventilator unit. The transfer function for the connection system can be determined in a control unit from the known, generated gas flow pattern and the measured, ensuing gas flow pattern. The corresponding determination can be made for the respiratory system after a patient has been connected.

Method and apparatus for maintaining a defined respiratory gas flow

An anesthetic system, primarily intended for a closed breathing circuit, has an inspiratory line, an expiratory line and a connecting line which form a closed gas line system with the inspiratory line and the expiratory line. A first check valve and a second check valve are arranged in the connecting line to control the direction of gas flow in the gas line system. A first gas reservoir and a second gas reservoir are also connected to the connecting line. The gas reservoirs are functionally interconnected so an increase in the volume of one results in a corresponding reduction in the volume of the other, and vice-versa. The changes in volume are actively controlled by a control system. During inspiration, respiratory gas is carried to the patient from a hand ventilator at the same time as respiratory gas is carried from the first gas reservoir to the second gas reservoir. During expiration, respiratory gas is carried from the patient to the first gas reservoir, and respiratory gas from the second gas reservoir is carried to the hand ventilator with a flow of fresh gas from a source of fresh gas. All flows are regulated to make them identical.
