One embodiment of the non-transitory computer readable medium comprises instructions that select a first controller for controlling a configuration of a first access point and a second access point, detect a particular event and, responsive to detecting the particular event, select a second controller for controlling the configuration of the first access point without modifying the selection of the first controller for controlling the configuration of the second access point.

According to one embodiment of the invention, a non-transitory computer readable medium for improving the scalability and redundancy of a wireless communications network. The present disclosure discloses a system and a method for providing radio frequency based access point load balancing in a controller cluster. Specifically, a network device detects a long-term network topology change in a network having a controller cluster, wherein the controller cluster comprises a plurality of controllers, and automatically reassigns one or more of a plurality of access points that are managed by a first controller to a second and different controller in the controller cluster without interrupting network traffic to and from client devices associated with the one or more of the plurality of access points. The access points are located within a particular radio frequency neighborhood. Also, the one or more of the plurality of access points provide adequate coverage in the particular radio frequency neighborhood in the event that the first controller and its corresponding access points after the reassignment become unavailable.

Radio property based access point load balancing in controller cluster

The present disclosure discloses a method and a network device for partitioning data sets for transmission on multiple physical links in a network. Specifically, a network device receives a particular data set addressed to a client device. The network device partitions the particular data set into at least a first subset of data and a second subset of data. Then, the network device encapsulates the first subset of data using a first header and encapsulating the second subset of data using a second header that results in (a) data with the first header being transmitted on a first physical link and (b) data with the second header being transmitted on a second physical link different than the first physical link. Finally, the network device transmits the first subset of data with the first header and the second subset of data with the second header.

One embodiment of the non-transitory computer readable medium comprises instructions that configure a first controller, of a plurality of controllers, as a primary controller for maintaining data associated with each particular device of a plurality of devices, for each particular device of the plurality of devices, select a respective secondary controller, from the plurality of controllers, for maintaining data associated with that particular device based on a respective identifier associated with that particular device, subsequent to selecting the secondary controller for each particular device of the plurality of devices, detect an error associated with the first controller, and responsive to detecting the error associated with the first controller, establish the secondary controller selected for each particular device, based on the respective identifier, as the primary controller for that particular device.

Select on of anchor controllers for client devices within a network environment

Extending wired networks by aggregating multiple wireless links. Multiple wireless links are used to bridge wired networks, such as wired Ethernet networks. Each wireless link applies a hash function to the destination MAC address of presented traffic and uses the result of the hash function to determine if the traffic is passed by that wireless link or is dropped. For broadcast and multicast frames, the hash function is calculated on the source MAC address. Dynamic source MAC rewriting may be performed to prevent port flapping or out-of-order arrival of frames. Establishing one link as a master and communicating among links allows for load balancing and link failure detection.

Aggregating multiple wireless channels

Prioritizing traffic forwarding in a wireless mesh network. In a wireless mesh network using carrier detect multiple access&#x2014;collision avoidance with backoff, such as mesh networks supporting IEEE 802.11 clients, access points in the mesh calculate a node rank based on downstream and upstream rank components. Access points in the mesh then generate backoff times inversely proportional to their node rank. This has the effect of prioritizing traffic at nodes that have higher rank. The downstream and upstream rank components take into account the amount of space occupied by downstream and upstream traffic, respectively, and are weighted by their position in the mesh tree.

Traffic forwarding in mesh networks

Assigning slots to nodes in a mesh network. Slot numbers are assigned to nodes in a wireless mesh network using a depth-first search combined with information on 2-hop neighborhoods for each node. Assigning slots using 2-hop neighborhood information allows slots to be safely reused. The slot assignment process may take process in parallel using different wireless channels for different subtrees rooted to a controller. Slot assignment may be repeated when the mesh topology changes. Reporting using the slot numbers allows for information from child nodes to be aggregated or filtered at parent nodes.
