The method further includes determining a configuration of the electrical distribution grid including a micro-grid, the micro-grid including the one or more premises. The method further includes electrically isolating, monitoring and controlling the micro-grid from the electrical distribution grid through the use of a micro-grid manager.

Configuring, optimizing, and managing micro-grids

Managing execution of a job in a computing environment. A method establishes, for a job to be executed in the computing environment, an execution plan for processing the job. The execution plan identifies computationally intensive tasks of the job and data intensive tasks of the job. The method selects a virtual machine of the computing environment to process the identified computationally intensive tasks of the job and identified data intensive tasks of the job. The method assigns the identified computationally intensive tasks of the job for foreground processing of the virtual machine and assigns the identified data intensive tasks of the job for background processing of the virtual machine. Execution of the job executes the identified computationally intensive tasks of the job in foreground processing of the virtual machine and executes the identified data intensive tasks of the job in background processing of the virtual machine.

Scheduling framework for tightly coupled jobs

Mechanisms are provided to implement an efficient translating mechanism to efficiently translating social media posts. A source language to be used to translate the social media post is identified based on words within the social media post. A highest classification is identified and the social media post is translated from the source language to a target language using a translation level associated with the highest classification. In the translation, each word and its related meaning in the target language are identified from a multi-language data structure; each word is categorized into its associated part of speech; a sentence is generated in the target language; and natural language processing is performed on each sentence in the target language to identity the existence of ambiguous connotations. Responsive to each sentence failing have any ambiguous connotations, a social medial post is generated in the target language utilizing the generated sentences.

Efficient translating of social media posts

Methods and program products for adjusting characteristics of photographs captured by electronic devices. The disclosed methods may include identifying a location of an electronic device at a detectable time. The electronic device may include a camera configured to capture a photograph at the location. The method may also include analyzing environmental data relating to the identified location, analyzing historical data for a collection of previously captured photographs at the identified location and providing at least one notification on the electronic device based on the analyzed environmental data and/or the analyzed historical data. Additionally, the method may include adjusting at least one camera setting for the camera of the electronic device based on the analyzed environmental data and the analyzed historical data.

Methods for adjusting characteristics of photographs captured by electronic devices and related program products

The method computer program products, and systems can include, for instance: assigning resources of a K-tier resource pool to a certain job residing in a job queue, wherein the certain job residing in the job queue features job coupling characterized by an independent job and a dependent job which for completion depends on an output of the independent job, wherein the K-tier resource pool includes at least one foreground virtual machine (VM) having a first central processing unit (CPU) priority and at least one background virtual machine (VM) having a second CPU priority, wherein the first CPU priority is higher than the second CPU priority, wherein the assigning resources of the K-tier resource pool to the certain job includes assigning one or more foreground VM to the independent job and assigning one or more background VM to the dependent job.

K-tier architecture scheduling

A method and system for automatically supplying parts for an assembly line is provided. The method includes generating and executing an action plan specifying movements associated with a robotic apparatus associated with the assembly line, items required for the assembly line, and a vehicle associated with providing the items for the robotic apparatus. The vehicle is directed to a location comprising the items and a first item is selected and retrieved upon arriving at the location. A measured weight of the first item is compared to a predetermined maximum weight threshold for delivery by the vehicle and a resulting delivery process with respect to the vehicle, first item, and robotic apparatus is executed. A notification indicating details associated with the delivery process is transmitted to the robotic apparatus.

Coordinating robotic apparatus deliveries

The present invention is a system and method for optimizing power on a smart grid network. The system includes one or more units, such as a smart home, each having a control center with a historical database. The control center is in digital communication with a network component of a smart grid. Historical data including a soft window period and a hard window period representing acceptable start times for one or more flexible ADLs are stored in the historical database. The network component receives historical data for the flexible ADLs from multiple control centers. The network component, which creates a schedule based at least in part on the historical data and transfers energy to the control center according to the schedule. While scheduling, the network component manages peak load, energy tariffs, penalties, forecasting of non-ADL demand, and forecasting of supply over the scheduling horizon among other things.

Scheduling the activities of daily living (ADLs) with minimum power usage cost on smart grid network

An approach to provide power from power supply devices to power consuming devices based on using priority levels for each of the power consuming and supply devices. The approach includes the steps of receiving information of a power consuming device from an energy management, including criticality information obtained from a universal appliance service system. The approach further includes receiving power supply information of one or more power supply devices associated with an electric grid, and receiving a power request from the power consuming device. The approach further includes determining that the power consuming device receives power from the power supply device, based on the criticality information and the power supply information.

Managing devices within micro-grids

A method, system and computer program product are disclosed for protecting against notification based phishing attacks on a computing device. In an embodiment, the method comprises when the computing device receives a notification, identifying a pattern for the notification and identifying an application that triggered the notification; determining if the identified pattern matches any of a defined group of pre-specified patterns, each of the pre-specified patterns being associated with a specified application; when the identified pattern matches one of the pre-specified patterns, determining if the specified application associated with the matched pattern is the same as the application that triggered the notification; and when the specified application associated with the matched pattern is not the same as the application that triggered the notification, generating a message to alert a user of the computing device that the received notification may be a phishing attack.

Protecting against notification based phishing attacks

A method, system and computer program product are disclosed for remotely testing computing devices including dynamic, shapeable tactile touch screens. In an embodiment, a method comprises establishing a communications connection between a computing device under test and a remote testing computer system, the computing device under test including a dynamic, configurable tactile touch screen; and configuring a portion of the touch screen of the computing device under test, in a defined manner, to form three-dimensional physical features on the touch screen for interacting with the touch screen. In an embodiment, the method further comprises transmitting specified information about said configuring, via the established communications connection, from the computing device under test to the remote testing computer system; and generating a defined visual representation on the remote testing computer system, by using the specified information, of said configuring a portion of the touch screen.

Testing apps in micro-fluidics based devices

The present invention is a system and method for determining the efficiency of a smart appliance in a smart grid network and providing feedback based on the efficiencies of similar smart appliances in the smart grid network. The system includes a central controller in digital communication with a network component of a smart grid and smart appliances in the smart grid network. The smart appliances are associated with ADLs. An energy consumption measurement is calculated for the smart appliances for each ADL. A notification is transmitted from the central controller to a smart appliance or to the owner of the smart appliance indicating to repair or replace the smart appliance when the energy consumption measurement is below an inefficiency threshold. The energy consumption measurement is determined based on data such as appliance meta data, smart meter data, a user profile, user demographics, a user specific ADL schedule, and historical data.

System and method to determining efficiency of a smart appliance and providing feedback based of efficiencies of similar smart appliances in a smart grid network

Method of allocating tasks in a computing environment including: receiving a software application having tasks for processing; splitting the software application into the tasks; selecting a task for processing in a first computing environment without encryption, a second computing environment with homomorphic encryption or a third computing environment without encryption based on the following algorithm: analyzing the tasks for the presence of a security marker indicating a security level of the tasks; when there is no security marker, selecting the task for processing in the least costly of first computing environment without encryption or the third computing environment without encryption; and when the security marker is present and the processing of the task involves any computation, selecting the task for processing in the least costly of the second computing environment with homomorphic encryption or the third computing environment.

Allocating tasks in a computing environment

A method and system for allocating data processing jobs between public and private cloud based on various SLA and cost factors associated to each job, and particularly, job allocation using minimal cost association by applying logistic regression. Jobs are analyzed based on various factors such as compute and operational intensity, kind of environment, I/O operations bandwidth, costs involved to deploy in private and public cloud and all these parameters are balanced to arrive at minimized cost. Methods are implemented for receiving input data representing a current request to run a job on a virtual machine, associated job characteristics, features associated with VMs running on a public networked or private networked host computing environment, and features associated with the host computing environment. The learned classifier model is run for selecting one of: the public network or private network as a host computing environment to run said current requested job on a VM resource, the learned model based on a minimized cost function.

Allocating jobs to virtual machines in a computing environment

A method, system, and computer program product for tracking data flow in a given application on a computer are disclosed. In embodiments, the method comprises performing a contextual analysis of the given application to identify specified features; generating contextual tracking data for the given application; the contextual tracking data moving through the given application; tracing the movement of the contextual tracking data through the given application; generating specified information about the contextual tracking data and the movement of the contextual tracking data through the given application; recording a tracing log including this specified information; and creating a data flow sequence for the given application from the information in the tracing log. In embodiments of the invention, a data tracking software program is used for performing the contextual analysis of the given application and for generating the contextual tracking data.
