Several embodiments of a personal display systems that comprises modular and extensible features to affect a range of user/wearer/viewer experiences. In one embodiment, the personal display system comprises a frame, said frame formed to fit and mount the head of a viewer; at least one optical piece, said at least one optical piece comprising at least a portion of a plurality of active emissive elements; at least one side piece, said side piece capable of being mated to said frame; and further wherein at least one said side piece comprising components sufficient to interact with images intended to comprise a view of said viewer. In another embodiment, a front piece may be mated to the frame of the personal display system wherein such front piece may comprise a transmissive portion affecting some form of modulation of the light being transmitted there through.

Head-mounted display

An audio apparatus is configured to switch, when there exists a first audio interface between the audio apparatus and a computer apparatus, to using a second audio interface between the audio apparatus and the computer apparatus, the second audio interface being different from the first audio interface. The switching comprises: receiving, via the first audio interface, combined audio data and non-audio data, the non-audio data comprising a request to switch to using the second audio interface; obtaining the request from the data; and, in response to obtaining the request, transmitting to the computer apparatus a confirmation of switching to using the second audio interface. The audio apparatus and the computer apparatus are described and claimed.

Switching to a second audio interface between a computer apparatus and an audio apparatus

A display provides increased contrast and resolution via first LCD panel energized to generate an image and a second LCD panel configured to increase contrast of the image. The second panel is an LCD panel without color filters and is configured to increase contrast by decreasing black levels of dark portions of images (making them blacker or darker) using polarization rotation and filtration. Preferably, the second LCD panel is of higher resolution than the first LCD panel. The panels may be directly illuminated or edge lit, and may be globally or locally dimmed monochrome or multi primary lights that may also include individual control of color intensities for each image or frame displayed. The panels may be placed in any order, but preferably are arranged such that active layers in each panel are as close together as possible. Brightness is maintained by the combination of reusing polarization between the panels and by not going through more than one set of color filters. Improved contrast is a result of using multiple light modulators in series.

High dynamic range displays using filterless LCD(s) for increasing contrast and resolution

Several embodiments of a personal display system are disclosed that comprises modular and extensible features to affect a range of user/wearer/viewer experiences. In one embodiment, the personal display system comprises a frame; a processor capable of sending image data signals and control signals; a display; an optic system, said optic system optically coupled to said at least one display; and a set of actuators, said actuators coupled to said frame and in communication with the optic system, such that said set of actuators are capable of moving the optic system, according to control signals sent from said processor. In another embodiment, a method for pre-warping input image data under processor control and according to ambient conditions, such as light and temperature, is disclosed.

Display, imaging system and controller for eyewear display device

A display including an image-generating panel and at least one contrast-enhancing panel, a cross BEF collimator between a backlight and one of the panels, and a polarization-preserving diffuser (e.g., holographic diffuser) between the panels. Typically, the contrast panel is upstream of the image panel, and a reflective polarizer is positioned between the cross BEF collimator or and contrast panel, with the reflective polarizer oriented relative to an initial polarizer of the contrast panel. Polarization of light transmitted by the reflective polarizer matches that transmitted by the initial polarizer. Collimated light propagating from the cross BEF collimator toward the contrast-enhancing panel is given a polarization bias by the reflective polarizer, which reflects incorrectly polarized light back toward the cross BEF collimator. Alternatively, the reflective polarizer may be positioned between the cross BEF collimator and the image-generating panel when the image-generating panel is upstream of the contrast-enhancing panel.

Several embodiments of display systems are disclosed that comprise a backlight source, a first modulator, a second modulator and a controller. The backlight source may further comprise an edge-lit backlighting source that may be controlled to affect a field-sequential illumination for the dual or multiple modulator display system. In another embodiment, the display system may comprise two or more color primary emitters that each comprise a color gamut. When the color gamuts are driven in a field sequential pattern, the resulting overall gamut is substantially wider. Other display systems and methods are disclosed herein that affect a variety of 3D viewing embodiments. Systems, methods and techniques to increase the dynamic range, color gamut and bit precision of display systems comprising MEMS and/or IMODs are presented.

High dynamic range displays comprising MEMS/IMOD components

Dual modulation display systems comprising a first modulation layer and a second modulation layer are disclosed, such that the first modulation layer and the second modulation layer are offset by a desired distance. In one embodiment, the offset distance may be an actual spatial offset distance in one, two or a preferred direction. In another embodiment, the offset distance may be a rotational offset between the two layers. In yet another embodiment, the offset may be a temporal offset between the images appearing on the first modulation layer and the second modulation layer. In yet another embodiment, the offset may be a combination of spatial, rotational and/or temporal offsets. The display system may comprise a controller capable of mapping input image data onto the first and second modulation layers via intermediate signals and the intermediate signals may be some function of the offset.

Systems and methods for increasing spatial or temporal resolution for dual modulated display systems

A dual-panel display system is provided that comprises control modules and algorithms to select codeword pairs (CWs) to drive a first image-generating panel and a second contrast-improving panel. The first codewords is selected by considering some characteristics of the input image data (e.g., peak luminance) and to improve some image rendering metric (e.g., reduced parallax, reduced contouring, improved level precision). The first codeword may be selected to be the minimum first codeword within a set of codeword pairs that preserves the peak luminance required by the input image data. Also, the first codeword may be selected to minimize the number of Just Noticeable Difference (JND) steps in the final image to be rendered. The second codeword may be selected to similarly improve image quality according to a given quality metric.

Systems and methods for accurately representing high contrast imagery on high dynamic range display systems

In a class of embodiments, a method and system for calibrating a display using feedback indicative of measurements of light, emitted from the display (typically during display of a test pattern), by a camera device whose camera has a sensitivity function that is unknown a priori but which is operable to measure light emitted by a display in a manner emulating at least one measurement by a reference camera having a known sensitivity function. Typically, the camera device is a handheld camera device including an inexpensive, uncalibrated camera. In another class of embodiments, a system including a display (to be recalibrated), a video preprocessor coupled to the display, and a feedback subsystem including a camera device operable to measure light emitted by the display. The feedback subsystem is coupled and configured to generate preprocessor control parameters in response to measurement data (indicative of measurements by the camera device) and to assert the preprocessor control parameters as calibration feedback to the preprocessor. The preprocessor is operable to calibrate (e.g., recalibrate) the display in response to the control parameters by filtering input image data (e.g., input video data) to be displayed, for example to automatically and dynamically correct for variations in calibration of the display.

Method and system for display calibration with feedback determined by a camera device

In an embodiment, a method performs computer operations using a first fractional precision and a second fractional precision. A computer program has a source variable, a destination variable, and an operation. The source variable has a first dynamic fractional precision, the destination variable has a second dynamic fractional precision that differs from the first dynamic fractional precision, and the operation is related to the source variable and the destination variable. The source variable is aligned to a format of the destination variable, according to the first dynamic fractional precision and the second dynamic fractional precision. The operation is performed using the destination variable and the source variable. A value is assigned to the destination variable according to the operation. In this manner, a single codebase may be written that operates on various hardware that each have different bit precision capabilities, without requiring additional development and verification effort.

System and method of dynamic precision operations

Edge lit displays are lit via a set (or individual) lighting elements. Each element projects light onto, for example, a zone which is then utilized directed as a backlight toward an LCD panel. An amount of light incident on any area (e.g., pixel) of the LCD panel (or SLM/series of SLMs) is calculated based on a sum of contributions from each zone. A similar process may be utilized for other lighting configurations. An amount of modulation performed by the LCD panel is then calculated based at least in part on lighting from the zones which may include brightness and varying levels of color content.

Method and apparatus for edge lit displays

Several embodiments of 3D display system and systems and methods for their calibration are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method and system for calibrating a 3D display using feedback indicative of measurements of light, emitted from the 3D display (typically during display of a test pattern), by a camera device. In one embodiment, the camera device is a handheld camera device including an inexpensive, uncalibrated camera. In another class of embodiments, a system including a 3D display (to be recalibrated), a video preprocessor coupled to the display, and a feedback subsystem including a camera device operable to measure light emitted by the display are also disclosed.
