A micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) device may comprise a first layer that includes a stator comb actuator; a second layer that includes a rotor comb actuator; a mirror structure that includes a mirror; and a first set of hinges and a second set of hinges configured to tilt the mirror structure about a first axis of the MEMS device based on a driving torque caused by the stator comb actuator engaging with the rotor comb actuator. The first set of hinges may be configured to resist a lateral linear force on the mirror structure in a direction associated with the first axis caused by the stator comb actuator engaging with the rotor comb actuator. The second set of hinges may be configured to resist an in-plane torque on the mirror structure about a second axis of the MEMS device caused by the stator comb actuator engaging with the rotor comb actuator.

MEMS device with a dual hinge structure

A vertical comb drive assembly may include a rotor assembly. The rotor assembly may include a comb anchor to attach the rotor assembly to a base, a comb rotor attached to the comb anchor, and a movable element attached to the comb rotor. The vertical comb drive assembly may include a stator assembly. The stator assembly may include a plate anchor to attach the stator assembly to the base, a plate, wherein the plate forms a comb stator, and a plate hinge to connect the plate to the plate anchor. The plate hinge and the plate may be configured for moving the plate from a first position where the comb rotor and the comb stator are both in a first plane to a second position where the comb rotor is in the first plane and the comb stator is in a second plane.

A micro-sized optical device may comprise a mirror suspended on a set of hinges that are mounted to the substrate and that are configured to tilt the mirror about an axis, wherein a hinge of the set of hinges is a two-layer structure with a pivot point that aligns with a mass center of the mirror; and a three-layer comb actuator structure associated with the hinge of the set of hinges, wherein the three-layer comb actuator structure includes a rotor comb actuator, a first stator comb actuator, and a second stator comb actuator.

A micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) device may include a mirror structure suspended from a first hinge and a second hinge that are arranged to enable the mirror structure to be tilted about a tilt axis. The mirror structure may include a first actuator and a second actuator located on opposite sides of the tilt axis. The MEMS device may include a fixed electrode coupled to first actuator to cause the mirror structure to tilt about the tilt axis in a first direction based on a fixed voltage applied to the fixed electrode. The MEMS device includes a driving electrode coupled to the second actuator to cause the mirror structure to tilt about the tilt axis in a second direction opposite from the first direction based on a driving voltage applied to the driving electrode.

A transmissive optical element may include a substrate. The transmissive optical element may include a first anti-reflectance structure for a particular wavelength range formed on the substrate. The transmissive optical element may include a second anti-reflectance structure for the particular wavelength range formed on the first anti-reflectance structure. The transmissive optical element may include a third anti-reflectance structure for the particular wavelength range formed on the second anti-reflectance structure. The transmissive optical element may include at least one layer disposed between the first anti-reflectance structure and the second anti-reflectance structure or between the second anti-reflectance structure and the third anti-reflectance structure.

A diffraction grating may include a substrate. The diffraction grating may include an etch stop layer to prevent etching of the substrate. The etch stop layer may be deposited on the substrate. The diffraction grating may include a marker layer to indicate an etch end-point associated with etching of a dielectric layer. The marker layer may be deposited on a portion of the etch stop layer. The diffraction grating may include the dielectric layer to form a grating layer after being etched. The dielectric layer may be deposited on at least the marker layer.

Thin film total internal reflection diffraction grating for single polarization or dual polarization

A sub-wavelength grating is placed inside a liquid crystal variable optical retarder to reduce polarization dependence of the optical retardation generated by the variable optical retarder. A small thickness of the sub-wavelength grating, as compared to a conventional waveplate, reduces the driving voltage penalty due to the in-cell placement of the sub-wavelength grating.

Variable optical retarder

A double stage isolator is formed of face-to-face slabs or sheets of materials that will suitably split, combine, non-reciprocally rotate to ensure isolation in a reverse direction from output ports to respective input ports of any light launched into the input ports. A right angled Porro-prism is disposed at an end of the affixed together slabs having planar faces to direct light launched in a folded fashion to the output ports. A half waveplate is used in addition to beam splitter combiners and non-reciprocal rotators means that rotate the light by 90 degrees so as to pass a single beam in a forward propagating direction and to interchange the polarization of two sub-beams that pass through from an output port to an input port in a reverse direction.

Multi-stage optical isolator

An isolated polarization beam splitter or combiner, for joining light from different inputs into one common port, and for dividing a beam of light into orthogonal polarizations. In both modes of operation, the splitter/combiner provides isolation preventing transmission of light in a reverse direction. As a splitter, a beam of light is separated through a birefringent material into sub-beams of orthogonal polarization components, and each sub-beam is passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator to rotate the polarization so that a reflected beam, or other counter-transmitted light cannot return on the same path through the birefringent material to the source. As a combiner, two separate beams of light are launched with known orthogonal polarizations into a first birefringent material, passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator and then combined as orthogonal polarizations into a single output port.

Isolated polarization beam splitter and combiner

A tunable PM fiber combiner is configured to be accurately alignable with and operative to combine into a single composite beam a pair of non-collimated, orthogonally polarized light beams transported over polarization maintaining (PM) optical fibers, whose mutual spatial separation may vary. The combiner includes birefringent elements, that are linearly or rotationally displaced to realize the composite beam. The resulting composite light beam may then be readily coupled (e.g. via a single mode fiber) to a downstream beam processing device, such as a Raman amplifier.

Tunable micro-optic architecture for combining light beam outputs of dual capillary polarization-maintaining optical fibers

This invention relates to elements such as birefringent crystals, which are used to separate a non-collimated input beam into two orthogonally polarized sub-beams or to combine two orthogonally polarized beams into a single beam. The optical device lessens or obviates the optical path length difference encountered in prior art devices and provides a polarization beam splitter/combiner that has substantially same optical path lengths for two split or combined beams propagating therethrough. Alternatively, the device is designed to provide a selected path length difference to compensate for polarization mode dispersion in other optical devices. The polarization beam splitter/combiner in accordance with the invention has a first uniaxial crystal having an o-ray path and an e-ray path and having the first port disposed at an end face thereof; a second uniaxial crystal having an o-ray path and an e-ray path, the e-ray path of the second uniaxial crystal being optically coupled with the o-ray path of the first uniaxial crystal and the o-ray path of the second uniaxial crystal being optically coupled with the e-ray path of the first uniaxial crystal. Alternatively, the axis of the second crystal is aligned in such a manner that the o-ray path is retarded by an extraordinary index of refraction of the crystal and the e-ray path is retarded by an ordinary index of refraction to equalize the optical path lengths.
