A battery cell monitoring system includes: a battery cell including an electrode stack disposed within a case; a gas sensor disposed within, attached to or connected to the case and configured to detect levels of one or more gases within the case; and a gas monitoring circuit connected to the gas sensor. The gas monitoring circuit includes: a memory that stores data collected from the gas sensor; a transceiver configured to transfer the data to a network device separate from the battery cell; and a control module that monitors the levels of one or more gases and based on the levels of the one or more gases detects (i) an issue with the battery cell during operative use of the battery cell, (ii) an issue with the battery cell during formation of the battery cell, or (iii) completion of a formation operation of the battery cell.

In-situ gas detection and monitoring of battery cells during formation and intended use

A positive electrode material is provided. The positive electrode material includes an electroactive material core and an electrochemically active coating that surrounds the electroactive material core. The electroactive material core includes LiMO, where 0≤x≤0.5 and M is selected from the group consisting of: nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), aluminum (Al), magnesium (Mg), and combinations thereof. The electrochemically active coating includes LiM'O, where 0≤x≤0.2 and M′ is selected from the group consisting of: nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), aluminum (Al), magnesium (Mg), and combinations thereof. The electrochemically active coating is a distinct composition from the electroactive material core.

Lithium-containing particle coatings for positive electroactive materials

A layered catalyst structure for purifying an exhaust gas stream includes a catalyst support and a rhodium catalyst layer including an atomic dispersion of rhodium ions and/or rhodium atoms adsorbed on an exterior surface of the catalyst support. The catalyst support includes an alumina substrate, a first ceria layer disposed on and extending substantially continuously over the alumina substrate, and a second colloidal ceria layer formed directly on the first ceria layer over the alumina substrate.

Rhodium-containing layered catalyst structures and methods of making the same

The present disclosure provides a method of preparing a coated electroactive material. The method includes providing a plurality of particles including an electroactive material. The method further includes coating the plurality of particles with a conductive polymer. The coating includes preparing a solution of water and the conductive polymer. The coating further includes forming a slurry by combining the solution with the plurality of particles. The method further includes drying the slurry to form the coated electroactive material. The coated electroactive material includes the plurality of particles. Each of the plurality of particles is at least partially coated with the conductive polymer. In certain aspects, the present disclosure provides a method of preparing an electrode including the coated electroactive material.

Method of coating electroactive materials with conductive polymers

Catalyst systems that are resistant to high-temperature sintering and methods for preparing such catalyst systems that are resistant to sintering at high temperatures are provided. Methods of forming such catalyst systems include contacting a support having a surface including a catalyst particle with a solution comprising a metal salt and having an acidic pH. The metal salt is precipitated onto the surface of the support. Next, the metal salt is calcined to selectively generate a porous coating of metal oxide on the surface of the support distributed around the catalyst particle.

Solution-based approach to make porous coatings for sinter-resistant catalysts

The present disclosure provides an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions. The electrochemical cell includes a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The positive electrode includes a positive electroactive material and a lithiation additive blended with the positive electroactive material. The lithiation additive includes a lithium-containing material and one or more metals. The lithium-containing material is represented by LiX, where X is hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), fluorine (F), phosphorous (P), or sulfur (S). The one or more metals are selected from the group consisting of: iron (Fe), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and combinations thereof. The negative electrode may include a volume-expanding negative electroactive material.

Lithiation additive for a positive electrode

Methods for preparing catalytic systems include passivating a gamma-phase alumina support body to yield a theta-phase alumina support body and applying catalytic metal to passivated theta-phase alumina support body. Passivating can include heating, optionally in the presence of steam. The gamma-phase alumina can be lanthanum-doped gamma-phase alumina and can be about 0.1-55 wt. % lanthanum. The catalytic metal can include rhodium, copper, or nickel. The catalytic metal can be rhodium or nickel, and the catalytic metal can be applied to the passivated theta-phase alumina support body at a loading of about 0.1-10 wt. %. The catalytic metal can be copper, and the catalytic metal can be applied to the passivated theta-phase alumina support body at a loading of about 0.1-30 wt. %. The gamma-phase alumina support body can be at least about 90 wt. % gamma-phase alumina. The passivated theta-phase alumina support body can be at least about 80 wt. % theta-phase alumina.

Methods for preparing catalytic systems

A lithium ion battery is provided that includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. One or more of the separator, positive electrode, and negative electrode includes a transition metal compound capable of catalyzing any gaseous reactants formed in the lithium ion battery to form a liquid. The transition metal compound may include ruthenium (Ru). In certain variations, the lithium ion battery includes an electrolyte that is a conductive medium for lithium ions to move between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The electrolyte comprises a transition metal compound capable of catalyzing a reaction of any gaseous reactants to form a liquid.

Elimination of gaseous reactants in lithium ion batteries

A three-way catalyst device (TWC) includes a first catalytic brick (FCB) and a second catalytic brick (SCB) downstream from the FCB. The FCB has a first washcoat applied to a first support body including ceramic and/or metal oxide particles, Pd particles, and Rh particles, and has at most 35 g/ftPd and at most 7.5 g/ftRh. The SCB has a second washcoat applied to a second support body including ceramic and/or metal oxide particles, Pt particles, and Rh particles, and has a Pt loading of at most 35 g/ftPt and a Rh loading of at most 7.0 g/ftRh. The FCB can have 25 g/ftto 35 g/ftPd and 5.5 g/ftto 7.5 g/ftRh and the SCB can have 25 g/ftto 35 g/ftPt and 5.0 g/ftto 7.0 g/ftRh. The TWC can receive exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine powering a vehicle.

Three-way catalyst materials and appurtenant devices and systems

A porous separator for a lithium-containing electrochemical cell is provided herein. The porous separator includes a porous substrate and an active layer comprising lithium ion-exchanged zeolite particles. Methods of manufacturing the porous separator and lithium-containing electrochemical cells including the porous separator are also provided herein.

Separators for lithium-containing electrochemical cells and methods of making the same

The present disclosure provides a method for operating a three-way catalyst system at high temperatures. The method includes passing a high-temperature exhaust stream exiting an engine over a thermally stable three-way catalyst system including a metal oxide support; two or more catalytically active metals disposed on the support; and a porous metal oxide coating disposed on one or more exposed surfaces of the support. At least one of the catalytically active metals may be platinum (Pt). The method further includes reducing an amount of the nitrogen oxides (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and non-methane hydrocarbons (HCs) in an effluent stream exiting the thermally stable three-way catalyst system so that the effluent stream has a combined amount of nitrogen oxides (NO) and non-methane hydrocarbons (HCs) of less than or equal to about 30 mg/mile and less than or equal to about 0.5 g/mile of carbon monoxide (CO).

Platinum-containing catalyst systems

Methods for preparing a catalyst system, include providing a catalytic substrate comprising a catalyst support having a surface with a plurality of metal catalytic nanoparticles bound thereto and physically mixing and/or electrostatically combining the catalytic substrate with a plurality of oxide coating nanoparticles to provide a coating of oxide coating nanoparticles on the surface of the catalytic nanoparticles. The metal catalytic nanoparticles can be one or more of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, rhenium, copper, silver, and gold. Physically combining can include combining via ball milling, blending, acoustic mixing, or theta composition, and the oxide coating nanoparticles can include one or more oxides of aluminum, cerium, zirconium, titanium, silicon, magnesium, zinc, barium, lanthanum, iron, strontium, and calcium. The catalyst support can include one or more oxides of aluminum, cerium, zirconium, titanium, silicon, magnesium, zinc, barium, iron, strontium, and calcium.

Methods for preparing catalyst systems

Internal combustion engine (ICE) exhaust gas treatment systems include the ICE having one or more cylinders configured to receive a mixture of air and fuel defined by an air to fuel ratio (AFR) for combustion therein, a control module configured to control the AFR, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) configured to receive exhaust gas generated by the ICE and oxidize NOx species within the exhaust gas, and a selective catalytic reduction device (SCR) configured to receive exhaust gas from the DOC. Methods for operating and diagnosing such systems include determining, via the control module, a baseline value of a SCR performance parameter which is unsuitable, changing, via the control module, the AFR to change the DOC outlet NO2:NOx ratio, subsequently assessing a second value of the SCR performance parameter, and implementing a control action based on the second value of the SCR performance parameter.

Methods for operating and diagnosing internal combustion engine exhaust gas treatment systems

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery disclosed herein comprises a positive electrode with a positive electroactive material that in a charged state comprises lithium iron (II) orthosilicate (LiFeSiO) and in a discharged state comprises FeSiOor LiFeSiO. A negative electrode comprises phosphorene. A separator is disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. An electrolyte has an organic solvent especially containing ether-based organic solvents and a lithium salt that provides a conductive medium for lithium ions to transfer between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. Such a rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides advantageous power delivery, long driving ranges, and fast charge to enhance widespread use of batteries, especially in vehicles. Furthermore, lithium plating can be minimized or avoided, even at low temperature charging. Methods of recharging a rechargeable lithium-ion battery at low temperatures are also disclosed.

Rechargeable lithium-ion battery chemistry with fast charge capability and high energy density

Bimetallic oxidation catalyst devices include a support body, one or more metal A bulk deposits disposed on the support body, and a plurality of metal B atomic clusters disposed on the surface of each of the metal A bulk deposits. Metal A and metal B are different metals each selected from the group consisting of platinum group metals (PGM), Ag, Au, Ni, Co, and Cu, and substantially no metal B is deposited on the support body. At least 85% by weight of the metal B atomic clusters comprise up to 10 atoms and the maximum metal B atomic cluster size is 200 metal B atoms. The combined loading of metal A and metal B can be less than 1.5% by weight relative to the weight of the support body. Metal A can include Pd, Rh, Rh, or Pd, and metal B can include Pt, Pt, Ag, or Ag.
