A process of patenting at least one steel wire (,) with a diameter less than 2.8 mm. The cooling is alternatingly done by film boiling in water (,) during one or more water cooling periods and in air during one or more air cooling periods. A water cooling period immediately follows an air cooling period and vice versa. The number of the water cooling periods, the number of the air cooling periods, the length of each water cooling period are so chosen so as to avoid the formation of martensite or bainite.

Heat treatment of a steel wire

In the induction heating of thin (e.g. 0.5 to 3 mm diameter) steel wires (W) in continuous heating processes, relatively low field strengths of e.g. up to 20,000 Am.sup.-1 are employed but are chosen so as to set the relative magnetic permeability .mu.r at 40 or more. The wire are passed through coil blocks (1), which are wound flat around a row of ceramic tubes (3) to guide and insulate the wires. The coil blocks are energized at frequencies typically up to 30 kHz. The direction of winding and/or the phase of the current is changed between adjacent coil blocks (1), or groups of blocks, to reduce voltage build-up along the wires.

Multi-wire induction heating

A process for the manufacture of hose or tubing conditions plastic high pressure hose having at least one reinforcing layer of steel wires, cords or longitudinal segments thereof. The hose is internally pressurized for a predetermined period of time which provides a residual permanent elongation of at least 0.5% and increases the interior volume by at least 2% upon release of the pressure.
