A compound capable of providing a liquid crystal composition with high T, large Δn, low V, large Δε, small tan δ, and satisfactory storability at low temperatures, and a liquid crystal composition, as well as a liquid crystal display element, a sensor, a liquid crystal lens, an optical communication device, and an antenna using the liquid crystal composition. Specifically, a compound represented by general formula (i) having an alkynyl group and an isothiocyanate group (—NCS) and a liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more of such compounds.

[Object] An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound for use in the manufacture of a PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display device. The polymerizable compound has a sufficiently high polymerization rate. The PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display device has few or no display defects due to a change in pretilt angle, has an adequate pretilt angle, and has high responsiveness. The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display device having the liquid crystal composition. [Solution] The object is achieved by using a liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more polymerizable compounds represented by the general formula (I).

Liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display element

A polymerizable compound-containing liquid crystal composition of the present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound represented by general formula (I) and a compound represented by general formula (II) and can be used for a liquid crystal display device imparted with liquid crystal aligning ability by polymerization. The polymerizable liquid crystal composition is required to cause no precipitation in a wide temperature range and have a low viscosity corresponding to fast switching, and a liquid crystal display device using the composition is required to have more stable alignment after polymerization and to cause no defect in display characteristics. In the present invention, the problems can be solved using a specified compound.

Polymerizable compound-containing liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device using the same

The present application provides a liquid crystal composition with high dielectric constant anisotropy and a low viscosity, and to provide a liquid crystal display device with high contrast, high-speed responsivity, high light fastness, and high display quality without image sticking and display defects. The liquid crystal composition contains one or two or more compounds represented by the general formula (I). The liquid crystal composition is of great practical use as a liquid crystal composition for use in liquid crystal displays and is effective for high contrast, high-speed response, and high quality reliability.

The present invention is a liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy containing one or two or more of compounds represented by General Formula (i), and is also a liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition. The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition with a large refractive index anisotropy (&#x394;n), a low rotational viscosity (&#x3b3;), a large elastic constant (K), a high voltage holding ratio (VHR), and which has a negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;), and a liquid crystal display element which, when using the liquid crystal composition, has a high response speed with excellent display quality in which display defects such as drop marks, burn-in, and display unevenness are absent or suppressed.

Nematic liquid crystal composition, and liquid crystal display element manufactured using same

The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound and having a negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;) and PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display element produced by using the same. The liquid crystal composition according to the present invention can provide PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display element, in which a sufficient pretilt angle is included, the amount of remaining monomer is small, there are no or almost no problems, e.g., alignment defects and display defects, arisen from a low voltage holding rate (VHR) and the like, and excellent response performance is exhibited. A liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition according to the present invention is useful for an active-matrix-drive liquid crystal display element and can be applied to PSA, PSVA, and other liquid crystal display elements.

Nematic liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display element using same

There is provided a liquid crystal composition that exhibits a sufficiently low viscosity (&#x3b7;), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (&#x3b3;1), and a large elastic modulus (K) without decreasing the refractive index anisotropy (&#x394;n) and the nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T) and without increasing the solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature (T). The liquid crystal display element that uses this liquid crystal composition satisfactorily obtains a pretilt angle and has a high voltage holding ratio (VHR) and high-speed response. Thus, a liquid crystal display element that has no or less alignment defects and display defects such as image sticking, and has high display quality and high response speed is obtained.

The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition, which is a liquid crystal composition containing a compound represented by General Formula (II-1) as an anti-oxidizing agent for a liquid crystal composition containing the compound represented by General Formula (II-1) and also as a first component, and a compound represented by General Formula (K) as a second component. The compound represented by General Formula (II-1) enables obtainment of a working effect of the anti-oxidizing agent, and therefore it allows provision of a liquid crystal composition containing the anti-oxidizing agent which has improved reliability like low temperature stability, while the high dielectric anisotropy is maintained.

Provided is an LCD device having excellent high speed responsiveness. This LCD device contains a polymer or a copolymer in a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between two transparent substrates, at least one of which has an electrode, and the content of the polymer or the copolymer is 1% by mass or greater and less than 40% by mass of the total mass of the liquid crystal composition and the polymer or the copolymer. This LCD device can be applied to various operation modes such as TN, STN, ECB, VA, VA-TN, IPS, FFS, a &#x3c0; cell, OCB, and cholesteric liquid crystals.

There is provided a liquid crystal composition having a dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;) large in absolute value, a sufficiently low viscosity (&#x3b7;), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (&#x3b3;), and a high elastic constant (K) without decreased refractive index anisotropy (&#x394;n) or nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T). A liquid crystal display device, such as a VA mode liquid crystal display device, including the liquid crystal composition has high response speed and good display quality with few or no display defects. The liquid crystal display device including the liquid crystal composition is useful as an active-matrix liquid crystal display device and is applicable as a liquid crystal display device such as a VA mode or PSVA mode liquid crystal display device.

The liquid crystal composition has sufficiently low viscosity (&#x3b7;), sufficiently low rotational viscosity (&#x3b3;1), a large elastic constant (K), and a negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;) whose absolute value is large, without reducing the refractive index anisotropy (&#x394;n) or the nematic-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T). A VA-mode liquid crystal display element including the liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystal display element having no or minimal display defects and having excellent display quality and a fast response. The liquid crystal display element including the liquid crystal composition is useful for an active matrix-addressed liquid crystal display element and used for, for example, a VA- or PSVA-mode liquid crystal display element.

There is provided a liquid crystal display device of a PSA type or the like that uses the polymerizable compound-containing liquid crystal composition, having a sufficiently fast response speed, capable of 3D displaying. Uniform and stable orientation control can be obtained at a lower energy cost. Provided are the polymerizable compound-containing liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more polymerizable compounds represented by general formula (M) as the first component, and containing one or two or more compounds represented by general formula (Na), general formula (Nb), or general formula (Nc) having a naphthalene unit as the second component. The liquid crystal display device uses the same.

A liquid crystal composition of the present invention is used for a liquid crystal display device of an active matrix driving mode which is required to have fast response. The liquid crystal composition has negative dielectric anisotropy, a large absolute value thereof, and low viscosity. Also, the liquid crystal composition has excellent liquid crystallinity that does not decrease &#x394;n and T, and the like, and exhibits a stable liquid crystal phase within a wide temperature range. Further, the liquid crystal composition is chemically stable to heat, light, water, and the like and is thus suitable for use in a liquid crystal display device in which display defects are suppressed in large-size application requiring high reliability. A liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition can be suitably used as a liquid crystal display device of a VA mode or the like.

Nematic liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device using the same

A nematic liquid crystal composition according to the invention is used for a liquid crystal display element for an active matrix drive for TV applications or the like for which a high speed and a wide viewing angle are required. The liquid crystal composition has a negative dielectric anisotropy having a large absolute value and also has a sufficiently low viscosity. Therefore, the liquid crystal composition has excellent characteristic properties, that is, a high speed response, good display quality and a suppressed display defect, and is therefore suitable as a practical liquid crystal composition. Further, a liquid crystal display element produced using the liquid crystal composition can be used favorably as a liquid crystal display element of a VA type or the like.
