A fluid actuator and retainer assembly, such as a master cylinder assembly for a vehicular braking system, includes a housing having a groove, a cylinder provided within the housing, and a piston assembly. The piston assembly includes a piston disposed within the cylinder for sliding movement relative thereto and a rod connected to the piston and extending from the cylinder and the housing. A retaining structure includes a rod engagement surface in contact with the rod, a plurality of engagement fingers extending from the rod engagement surface, and a detent extending from each of the plurality of engagement fingers into cooperation with the groove to retain the piston assembly in position relative to the cylinder housing.

A vehicle brake system including a wheel brake and a master cylinder operable to provide pressurized fluid to the wheel brake. The master cylinder includes a housing having a bore formed therein, and further including a piston slidably disposed in the bore. The brake system further includes a fluid reservoir in selective fluid communication with the bore of the master cylinder. The brake system also includes an isolation valve movable between an open position, wherein fluid is permitted to flow between the master cylinder and the wheel brake, and a closed position, wherein fluid is restricted from flowing between the master cylinder and the wheel brake. The brake system further includes a dump valve movable between a closed position, wherein fluid is prevented from flowing between the wheel brake and the reservoir, and an open position, wherein fluid is permitted to flow between the wheel brake and the reservoir. The brake system additionally including a cut-off valve movable between an open position, wherein fluid is permitted to flow between the dump valve and the reservoir, and a closed position, wherein fluid is restricted from flowing between the dump valve and the reservoir.

A master cylinder for a vehicle hydraulic brake system, in which the master cylinder includes a body having a stepped bore formed therethrough and at least one piston disposed within the stepped bore. A plug is preferably permanently fixed to one end of the bore providing for a leak tight seal at the end of the bore. The master cylinder preferably includes a spring assembly having a pin with a longitudinally regular end portion which is retained in a bore of the piston.

A fabricated master cylinder having a reservoir part and in interlocked cylinder part defining a cylinder bore and which a slidable piston is supported. The reservoir part that extends into the cylinder bore defines a shoulder that cooperates with a recuperation valve for forming an actuating stop for holding the makeup fluid recuperation valve in an opened position when the piston is at its at rest position.
