In a communication system, a password that enables an embedded software program within a base station can be generated using public key cryptography in the following manner. A system controller (103) obtains a unique identification code and an embedded software code for the base station (101). Once obtained, the system controller (103) encrypts the unique identification code and the embedded software code using a private key to produce a password. The password is transferred to the base station (101) where, upon receipt, is decrypted using a public key to produce the unique identification code and the embedded software code. The base station (101) compares the unique identification code and an embedded unique identification code (107) and, when they substantially match, the base station (101) stores the password.

Method for generating a password using public key cryptography

A master repeater controls a trunked communication system having a number of communication resources. The master repeater determines (201) how many communication resources are available to the master repeater. When one control resource and one message resource are among the available communication resources (203), the master repeater suspends (211) trunked communication system operation when the number of available communication resources are less than a minimum number of resources (205), and the available communication resources fail to include all control resources (207) from the trunked communication system. When one control resource and one message resource are among the available communication resources (203), the master repeater provides (209) trunked communication system operation when the number of available communication resources are equal to or greater than a minimum number of resources (205), or the available communication resources include all control resources (207) from the trunked communication system.

Method of maintaining control in a trunked communication system

An audio system (600) typically includes an audio signal processor (610), a controller (607) for controlling data signals, and a peripheral data source (613). The audio signal processor (610) exchanges information with a remote audio device (603) via a communication resource (605). A method of reducing spurious noise levels on the communication resource (605) includes generating a timing signal (400) having a period and randomly altering the period (409, 411, 413) of the timing signal (400) between a first predetermined value and a second predetermined value. The randomly altered timing signal are then used to effect control of the data signals, while providing a reduced level of spurious noise on the communication resource (605).
