A public transit vehicle has a vehicle body having a roof defining an interior ceiling surface, two side walls each extending longitudinally of the vehicle including an upper side wall portion connecting to the roof and a row of windows underneath the upper portion, a central aisle and two rows of seats each on a respective side of the aisle and along the side wall at the windows. Each window comprises an outer pan attached into the window opening in the frame and a pane structure pivotally mounted in the pan. The pan is formed by four sides each of which is integrally defined by a web bridging the width of the frame, an exterior flange projecting outwardly and an interior flange projecting inwardly with the pan held in place by adhesive between the exterior surface of the frame and the exterior flange and between the web and the corresponding surface of the frame. The pan is thus imperforate to prevent moisture penetration. The pane includes an external frame sealed relative to the pan sides by three separate seals. The pane is suspended from a pivot at the top and is latched by latches in the bottom frame of the pane.

Window structure for mass transit vehicle

A public transit vehicle has a vehicle body having a roof defining an interior ceiling surface, two side walls each extending longitudinally of the vehicle including an upper side wall portion connecting to the roof and a row of windows underneath the upper portion, a central aisle and two rows of seats each on a respective side of the aisle and along the side wall at the windows. Stanchions for supporting passengers while standing are shaped so that they curve upwardly and outwardly of the aisle to a wider spacing at the ceiling than at the seats. Between two stanchion mounting rails is provided a central ceiling panel dropped from the roof to define an air supply duct longitudinally along the aisle above the passengers. This is supplied with ventilation air by a roof mounted system and communicates by individual sub-ducts with a series of fans in the side walls. A flap valve at the fan can be operated to cause heated air when required to be supplied through the main side wall posts to bottom discharge openings at the bottom interior panels or to cause cooled air to be supplied to a duct along the top of the windows.

Interior structure of a mass transit vehicle

A public transit vehicle is driven by a hybrid drive system including a diesel engine, a generator driven by the engine, two battery packs for storing energy from the generator and from re-generated braking energy and a transmission in the form of a motor driven by the electrical energy from the generator and/or the batteries. The drive components are mounted on a sub-frame for carrying which is arranged for readily releasable attachment to the main longitudinal beams of the vehicle body so as to be carried on the vehicle body during operation of the vehicle. The sub-frame itself is designed simply and avoiding duplication of support elements so that it is incapable of supporting by itself the radiator and the transmission which are partially supported in use by elements of the vehicle body. There is provided a movable service dolly for supporting the sub-frame with the engine components thereon and for supporting the radiator and the transmission so that the dolly and the sub-frame co-operate to support all of the engine components during servicing so that they can be removed together. The engine is arranged transverse to the longitudinal frame with the radiator to one side of the body and the generator directly driven at the rear end of the engine and the motor/transmission in front of the engine. The battery packs are arranged on the roof each on a respective side and one aligned side by side with the electrical controllers for the engine system.

Engine configuration for mass transit vehicle

A public transit vehicle has a vehicle body having a roof defining an interior ceiling surface, two side walls each extending longitudinally of the vehicle including an upper side wall portion connecting to the roof and a row of windows underneath the upper portion, a central aisle and two rows of seats each on a respective side of the aisle and along the side wall at the windows. The roof and floor are formed from a welded frame structure over which is applied a molded panel formed in single panel structure and bonded to the frame structure. The panel is formed by molding a sandwich using a thermosetting resin through top and bottom fiber reinforced sheets and a honeycomb layer of resin impregnated paper and foam between the sheets. The floor panel is shaped so that its thickness varies and its top and bottom surfaces deviate from an otherwise planar structure to incline downwardly at a door way and to incline upwardly to clear structural elements. The side walls are clad by a coping panel connected to the roof panel and by a side wall panel beneath the windows. The cladding panels carry the wall insulation.

Body structure of a mass transit vehicle

A public transit vehicle has a passenger entrance ramp at a door way including a support frame for mounting on the vehicle at the doorway carrying a primary ramp panel, a secondary ramp panel and a fixed platform panel. The primary panel is pivotal through 180 degrees between a retracted position inverted within the vehicle and covering the secondary panel and the fixed platform panel and a deployed position in which the primary ramp panel is inclined from an inner edge downwardly and outwardly from the vehicle to an outer edge at the ground. The primary panel is pivoted at its inner edge on an outer edge of the secondary ramp panel pivotal which is in turn pivotal about an inner horizontal axis at its inner edge. The primary and secondary ramp panels are thus arranged such that, in the retracted position, the outer edge of the secondary panel is in the raised position so that both the primary and secondary ramp panels are substantially horizontal and, in the deployed position, the outer edge is moved to the lowered position so that the primary and secondary ramp panels form a common ramp surface inclined outwardly and downwardly from the inner edge of the secondary ramp panel to the outer edge of the primary ramp panel.

Passenger entrance ramp for mass transit vehicle

A mechanism is provided for deploying a wheelchair ramp at the door of a vehicle, especially a bus, the ramp being of the kind which rotates between a stowed position at which it is flush with the vehicle floor and a deployed position in which it slopes downwardly and outwardly from the vehicle. The mechanism provides a 'float down' feature which permits the ramp to move downward under gravity without the need for operator control and prevents crushing of obstacles that get in the downward path of the ramp. The mechanism includes a transmission for translating a single hydraulic cylinder stroke into more than 180.degree. of rotation of the ramp.
