An electrical transmission safety system for connection of direct current (DC) power from a DC power source to a load comprises: a connection from the power source to the load, the connection comprising a positive terminal and a negative terminal; a first solid state switch electrically connected between the power source and one of the positive terminal and negative terminal; and a switch-control isolation block comprising a first optocoupler, the first optocoupler providing electrical isolation from the power source for generating a first isolated switch-control signal in response to a switch-control input signal, the switch-control isolation block connected to provide the first isolated switch-control signal to the first solid state switch to thereby control an ON or OFF conduction state of the first solid state switch and corresponding current flow between the power source and the load through the one of the positive terminal and negative terminal.

Circuits for photovoltaic applications

A fault-responsive power system and method using asynchronous load current switching. A first supply-side current that flows from a power supply into a first conductor, which electrically couples the power supply to a load, is measured. Power is delivered to the load by modulating a first remote-side current on and off, with the remote-side current entering the load from the first conductor. Once it is determined that the first supply-side current has met or exceeded a magnitude threshold for at least a duration threshold, the first supply-side current is reduced such that the first supply-side current is less than the magnitude threshold. A data signal may also be transmitted by embedding a data signal in the first remote-side current through the modulation of the first remote-side current, and demodulating the data signal in the first supply-side current.

Fault-responsive power system and method using asynchronous load current switching

A fault-responsive power system and method using active line current balancing. First and second supply-side currents flowing from at least one power supply and into first and second conductor pairs, respectively, are measured. First and second remote-side currents flowing from the first and second conductor pairs and into first and second power converters, respectively, are measured. The outputs of the first and second power converters are electrically coupled together in parallel and deliver power to a load. The first and second remote-side currents are balanced in response to measurements of the first and second remote-side currents while power is being delivered. When a difference between the first and second supply-side currents at least meets a magnitude threshold, the first and second supply-side currents are reduced until the difference is less than the magnitude threshold.

Fault-responsive power system and method using active line current balancing

In a line to line fault detection and protection system, a source end power supply supplies power to a remote load over a transmission line and monitors the dynamic behavior of a transmission line power characteristic. If that dynamic behavior is outside a constraint that is actively imposed on the transmission line dynamic behavior by a load end power conditioning system, a possible line to line fault is recognized. The preferred power characteristic is current and the preferred constraint is a maximum rate of change of current drawn from the transmission line by the load end power conditioning system.
