Embodiments of the invention are directed to a system and an apparatus for enabling a user device or a plurality of user devices to communicate with a gateway service device. The system may include at least one user device, at least one remote access device, a communication network, a central access device, and the gateway service device. The system operates such as if the gateway service device and the user device are on the same network. The data may be transmitted from the user device to the at least one remote access device where it is encapsulated to allow the data to be routed over the communication network. The central access device may receive the data and de-encapsulate the data in order to transfer the data to the gateway service device.

Virtual switch in a wide area network

A system and method of providing digitized media content from a remote server through a data network is disclosed. A local content server at the premises of the subscriber hosts an agent process and includes a memory for storing the digitized content. The digitized content may be streamed on demand to client devices through the agent process for a subscription period. However, the subscriber is prevented from otherwise accessing the digitized content from the local server. Also, the digitized content delivered from the remote server to the local server is combined with encoded data identifying the subscriber.

System of delivering content on-line

A server appliance for use in a network of client users is disclosed. The server appliance includes a hub for coupling to one or more client computer workstations. Each client computer workstation is configured to communicate with the server appliance based upon the operating system hosted on the server appliance. The server appliance includes a control panel with a display which enables a system operator to retrieve forgotten password information and initiate an automated procedure for backing up data stored on a non-volatile memory at the appliance server. Additionally, the server appliance includes a parallel port for coupling to a shared parallel port printer which receives print jobs originating at the client computer workstations.

Server appliance

A computer system includes a computer having an event detecting interface for detecting when an event occurs. Based on the occurrence of the event, a keyboard assignment scheme is dynamically reconfigured to an appropriate configuration. The computer also includes a user interface for sensing when a key combination of at least one standard key and a non-standard key of a keyboard is depressed and a look-up table for storing a plurality of key combinations and one or more applications corresponding to each key combination of the active configuration. A non-standard key application control in the computer determines the application corresponding to the depressed key combination according to the active configuration. If the depressed key combination corresponds to one application, the non-standard key application control launches the application via an application program interface. If the depressed key combination corresponds to a plurality of separate applications, the user is presented with a pop-up list to select an application for launching. In addition, the user can define the available configurations by communicating with the non-standard key application control via user dialogs to add or edit configurations thereby selecting the applications launched when a key combination in the defined configuration is depressed.
