The present invention provides a method for inhibiting the evolution of HS from sulfhydryl compounds in molten sulfur by using scavenging agents such as anhydrides and polymers thereof, conjugated ketones, carbonates, epoxides, monoesters and diesters of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and polymers of these esters, and the like and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, it is preferred that the scavenging agent is in liquid form at contact temperature with the molten sulfur. In another embodiment, the scavenging agent may be atomized into the vapor space over the molten sulfur to contact the sulfur with the agent.

Hydrogen sulfide abatement in molten sulfur

The present invention provides a method for inhibiting the evolution of H S from sulfhydryl compounds in molten sulfur by using scavenging agents such as anhydrides and polymers thereof, conjugated ketones, carbonates, epoxides, monoesters and diesters of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and polymers of these esters, and the like and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, it is preferred that the scavenging agent is in liquid form at contact temperature with the molten sulfur. In another embodiment, the scavenging agent may be atomized into the vapor space over the molten sulfur to contact the sulfur with the agent.

Hydroxalkylaminium polysulfides are used to provide cold stability to ammonium polysulfide solutions. Hydroxyalkylaminium sulfides or polysulfides also are used to solubilize unwanted sulfur. Preferred aminium ions are monohydroxyalkylaminium ions, preferably monoethanolaminium ions. When added to an aqueous stream comprising free cyanide ions (including HCN), the polysulfide solution reduces corrosion of metal equipment contacted by the stream by converting the free cyanide ions into thiocyanate ions.

The present invention provides a method of dissolving coke oven gas deposits comprising treating the deposits with a combination of a first amide and a second amide under conditions and at a ratio sufficient to dissolve a first amount of the deposit greater than a second amount of the deposit calculated based upon the proportional individual solvencies of the first amide and the second amide, wherein the first amide comprises N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone.

A process for removing acrolein from a gaseous or liquid mixture, in one case aqueous solutions, involving contacting the mixture with a compound selected from the group consisting of sodium hypochlorite; an acid salt of hydroxylamine; a urea compound such as urea itself or thiourea; sodium bisulfite and 4,4-dimethyl-1-oxa-3-azacyclopentane in an amount effective to substantially remove acrolein has been discovered. The process works particularly well in selectively scavenging acrolein from aqueous solutions containing acrylonitrile.

The present invention provides a number of agents that are useful to inhibit aldol condensation in caustic scrubbers. Preferred agents include, but are not necessarily limited to benzoic hydrazide, hydroperoxides, hydrogen peroxide, salts of hypochlorous acid, nitroalkanes, monoethanolamine, peroxyesters, and N,N-dialkylhydroxylamines.

The present invention provides a large number of inhibiting agents that are useful to reduce aldol condensation in monoethanolamine scrubbers. Such agents include hydrazine, hydroperoxides, hydrogen peroxide, and dialkylketone oximes. Preferred inhibiting agents are hydrazines.

Disclosed herein is a process for removing acrolein from a gaseous or liquid mixture, in one case aqueous solutions, involving contacting the mixture with a compound selected from the group consisting of sodium hypochlorite; an acid salt of hydroxylamine; a urea compound such as urea itself or thiourea; sodium bisulfite and 4,4-dimethyl-1-oxa-3-azacyclopentane in an amount effective to substantially remove acrolein has been discovered. The present invention provides a method for scavenging H.sub.2 S from aqueous and hydrocarbon substrates using an epoxide. Preferred epoxides are styrene oxide, 1,3-butadiene diepoxide, and cyclohexene oxide.

Abatement of hydrogen sulfide with epoxides

The present invention provides a number of inhibiting agents that are useful to reduce aldol condensation in diethanolamine scrubbers. Sour sulfhydryl group containing oils are treated with an effective amount of a sweetening, hydrogen sulfide vapor reducing quaternary ammonium compound of the formula ##STR1## (a) wherein (i) R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrocarbon groups including alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or arylalkyl groups, of up to 24 carbon atoms, and if an alkyl group, may include a cycloalkyl; with the proviso that two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be in saturated heterocyclic ring which includes said nitrogen atom and may also include an oxygen atom; and (ii) at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 has two or more carbon atoms; and (b) wherein R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 independently are hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group of up to six carbon atoms, with the proviso that two of R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 may be in a cycloalkane ring. The compounds used in this treatment are especially suitable for high boiling, heavy residual fuels under low mix conditions.

In accordance with this invention, a method is provided for decreasing hydrogen sulfide atmosphere, over sour heavy fuel oils to a predetermined acceptable level, which comprises treating such fuel oil with an effective amount of a choline base at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the choline base. Surprisingly, this is effective to treat sour heavy fuel oils having atmospheric hydrogen sulfide content exceeding 5,000 ppm.
