The techniques disclosed herein enable a guest operating system (OS) to access and use a color space conversion component on a host OS. The guest OS provides, via an application programming interface, a request for the host OS to generate media data in a color space format that is used by the guest OS. To generate the media data, the host OS uses a color space conversion component on the host OS, which is more performant than a corresponding color space conversion component on the guest OS because the color space conversion component on the host OS has access to hardware-accelerated functionality. Accordingly, the color space conversion component on the host OS converts media data into the color space format that is used by the guest OS, and stores the media data in memory that is accessible to the guest OS.

Providing host media processing functionality to a guest operating system

The techniques disclosed herein enable a guest operating system (OS) to access and use a media processing component configured on a host OS. The guest OS provides, via an API, a request to create an instance of the media processing component (e.g., a codec, an encryption/decryption component, a DRM component). In association with the request, the guest OS allocates space in memory for media data that is to be processed by the instance of the media processing component configured on the host OS. The guest OS stores the input media data in the allocated memory and provides, via the API, reference(s) to locations of the allocated memory. The reference(s) to the locations of the allocated memory enable the host OS to retrieve the input media data and process the input media data using the instance of the media processing component configured on the host OS.

Techniques are described herein that are capable of reducing interrupts using buffering for data processing. In a first example, information is received at an operating system from an application. The information indicates multiple buffers, including a triggering buffer to trigger an interrupt from hardware. Portions of the data are stored in the respective buffers. A schedule for processing the buffers is provided to the hardware. The schedule indicates that the interrupt is to be delayed until the triggering buffer is processed by the hardware. In a second example, a network interface controller is configured to provide one interrupt to the operating system for each of multiple subsets of network packets that is processed by the network interface controller. Each subset includes a number of the network packets that is greater than one. The network packets are associated with a common network socket.

Reducing interrupts using buffering for data processing

Described are examples for streaming content at a device. One or more environmental parameters can be determined for the device. One or more parameters for receiving streaming content via one or more streaming servers over one or more network connections can be modified based on the one or more environmental parameters. The streaming content can be received based at least in part on the one or more streaming parameters.

Modifying content streaming based on device parameters

An electronic display system comprises first and second display surfaces and a computer. Each of the first and second display surfaces is configured to receive and transmit display light from an emissive element. Each of the first and second display surfaces includes both a flat portion and an edge portion non-coplanar to the flat portion. The computer is configured to control the emissive elements of the first and second display surfaces so as to present a first section of a display image on the first display surface and a second section of the display image on the second display surface. In this example, one or more rows of the display image rendered on the flat portion of a display surface are rendered duplicatively on an edge portion.

Display presentation across plural display surfaces

The described technology addresses one or more of the foregoing problems by receiving one or more workloads from an application. Each of the one or more graphics workloads are associated with completion deadline information and execution metadata representing execution guidance for the workload. The described technology further generates a processor performance adjustment for each of the one or more workloads using a performance model providing the processor performance adjustment based on the completion deadline information and the execution metadata for each of the one or more workloads. The described technology further communicates each of the one or more received workloads and its corresponding generated processor performance adjustment to a processor subsystem. Each of the processor performance adjustments instructs the processor subsystem on a processor adjustment to be implemented when executing the associated workload.

Dynamic processor power management

Innovations in rendering of high dynamic range ('HDR') content are described. A playback system can adjust a tone mapping function used when rendering the HDR content, thereby improving quality when rendering the HDR content. For example, the playback system includes decision logic, which is configured to receive summary information (e.g., histogram information) for sample values of a picture of HDR content, and set a tone mapping function based at least in part on the summary information. The tone mapping function can be selected from among multiple available tone mapping functions, and parameters of the selected tone mapping function can be determined based at least in part on the summary information. A tone mapper is configured to apply tone mapping to input values for the sample values of the picture of HDR content, according to the tone mapping function, and thereby produce output values.

Content-adaptive adjustments to tone mapping operations for high dynamic range content

Innovations in rendering of high dynamic range ('HDR') content are described. A playback system can dynamically and proactively adjust the brightness level of a target display device. In some cases, this can reduce power consumption when rendering HDR content, without any noticeable degradation in quality. For example, the playback system includes decision logic. The decision logic is configured to receive summary information for sample values of a picture of HDR content and determine (based at least in part on the summary information) a brightness level of the target display device. The playback system can send, to the target display device, a control signal that indicates the brightness level of the target display device. A tone mapper can be configured to apply tone mapping to input values for the sample values of the picture of HDR content, according to a tone mapping function, and thereby produce output values.

Content-adaptive adjustment of display device brightness levels when rendering high dynamic range content

In a video processing system including a video decoder, to handle frequent changes in the bit rate of an encoded bitstream, a video decoder can be configured to process a change in bit rates without reinitializing. The video decoder can be configured to reduce memory utilization. The video decoder can be configured both to process a change in bit rate without reinitializing while reducing memory utilization. In one implementation, the video processing system can include an interface between an application running on a host processor and the video decoder which allows the video decoder to communicate with the host application about the configuration of the video decoder.

Multiple bit rate video decoding

A battery operated device, having a display with two or more available refresh rates, has its refresh rate selected so as to match the video frame rate of video data played back on the display. This selection is made by coordinating the resources in the device that are used to process the video from its reception through to its display.

Adaptive control of display refresh rate based on video frame rate and power efficiency

Disclosed herein are representative embodiments of tools and techniques for facilitating decoding of protected media information using a secure operating system. According to one exemplary technique, encoded media information that is encrypted is received at a secure process of a secure operating system of a computing system. At least a portion of the encoded media information that is encrypted is decrypted in the secure process. The portion of the encoded media information includes header information. Additionally, the header information is sent from the secure operating system to a software decoder for control of decoding hardware. The software decoder is included in a process for an application. Also, the decoding hardware is securely provided access to the encoded media information for decoding of the encoded media information to produce decoded media information.

Protected media decoding using a secure operating system

The various methods and systems described herein are directed to supplying a secure channel for software executing on a host computer. The methods and systems address and provide solutions for an attack model in which rogue software executing on the host computer attempts to inappropriately obtain or otherwise manipulate data. Some embodiments can provide pixel data that can be kept confidential (in that untrusted software applications cannot read the data off of the display screen). In addition, other embodiments can preserve the integrity of the pixel data by detecting whether the pixel data has been inappropriately manipulated. Various embodiments are based on a decryption engine that is located on a video card very late in the video processing chain such that programmatic access to decrypted pixel data is denied.

Auxiliary functionality for pixel data

Various methods and systems permit digital data, such as video data, audio/video data, audio/video/subpicture data and the like, to be processed in a manner that permits playback at different speeds in both forward and reverse directions. Various embodiments are also directed to handling playback rate changes in a manner that can enhance the experience of a user.

Methods and systems for processing digital data rate and directional playback changes

A video encoding acceleration service to increase one or more of the speed and quality of video encoding is described. The service acts as an intermediary between an arbitrary video encoder computer program application and arbitrary video acceleration hardware. The service receives one or more queries from the video encoder to identify implementation specifics of the video acceleration hardware. The service interfaces with the video acceleration hardware to obtain the implementation specifics. The service communicates the implementation specifics to the video encoder. The implementation specifics enable the video encoder to: (a) determine whether one or more of speed and quality of software encoding operations associated with the video encoder can be increased with implementation of a pipeline of one or more supported encoding pipeline configurations and capabilities, and (b) implement the pipeline by interfacing with the service.
