Example devices and methods for compensating for monitoring a surge protection device are provided. In some embodiments, a device is configured to couple to a surge protection device. The device comprises a processor that is capable of sending a DC current signal. A serial data interface is electrically connected to the processor and includes at least one shift register. The device also comprises a multiplexer coupled to the serial data interface. The serial data interface is operable to direct the DC current through the multiplexer. The device also comprises an analog to digital converter (optionally embedded within the processor) that is operable to output a digital signal corresponding to a voltage induced by the DC current signal. Returned DC signals represent surge protection device's health and a multitude of other surge module information.

Devices and methods for surge protection device monitoring

A system for protecting a load from a fault on a line comprising: a detection circuit monitoring the line; and a switch interposed between the line and the load; wherein the detection circuit triggers the switch to disconnect the load from the line when the fault is detected. The detection circuit may trigger the switch within one second of detecting the fault. The detection circuit may monitor the line voltage of the line and the fault may be detected when the line voltage exceeds 125% or 130% of the normal voltage. The load may be automatically reconnected to the line when the line voltage drops to within 5% or 10% of a normal voltage. The fault may be any one or more of an open-neutral, an over-voltage, an under-voltage, a phase loss, and an external trigger, such as an access sensor, a smoke sensor, and/or a heat sensor.

Power disconnect system and method

A multidimensional addressing network for a power system comprising a number of substantially identical modules monitoring a plurality of surge suppressors. Each module may be uniquely selected or identified based at least in part on its physical relationship with the base plates and other modules.

Physical addressing for transient voltage surge suppressor modules

A transient voltage surge suppressor assembly comprising: a first energy absorbing device; a second energy absorbing device in parallel with the first device; and a voltage sense circuit configured to take the first device off-line when a voltage swell lasts for a duration. The first and second devices may be wired in parallel between a line and a neutral. The assembly may include a third energy absorbing device wired between the line and a ground, the third device also being configured to be taken off-line when the voltage swell lasts for the duration. The voltage sense circuit may be powered by a line voltage or a lower supply voltage. The first device may be more sensitive than the second device. For example, the first device may have a lower clamping voltage than the second device. The first device may be smaller and/or include fewer components than the second device.

Swell sustaining transient voltage surge suppressor

A system and method for providing acceptable output power from a wide range of received power, comprising: outputting a received voltage as an output voltage if the received voltage does not exceed a threshold; and limiting the output voltage to the threshold if the received voltage exceeds the threshold. Limiting the output voltage may comprise dropping an excess voltage across a switching element, wherein the excess voltage is the received voltage minus the threshold.

Power supply continuous input voltage extender

A system and method for converting a relatively high voltage into a relatively low voltage, the method comprising the steps of: receiving a first series of pulses at the relatively high voltage and a first frequency; and converting the first series of pulses into a second series of pulses at a second voltage lower than the relatively high voltage and a second frequency higher than the first frequency. The first series of pulses may be a waveform and the converting step may be triggered by the waveform of the first series of pulses exceeding the relatively low voltage. The first series of pulses may be direct current pulses and the receiving step may comprise receiving an alternating current voltage and rectifying the alternating current voltage into the first series of pulses. The second frequency may be some multiple of the first frequency, such as twice the first frequency.

Power supply discontinuous input voltage extender

This invention relates generally to surge suppression and more particularly, to monitoring the integrity of a neutral-to-ground suppression circuit or other suppression circuit. In accordance with the present invention, a neutral-to-ground fault monitor is disclosed, eliminating one or more disadvantages associated with the prior art. One embodiment of the fault monitor includes a suppression circuit and a monitoring circuit where the suppression circuit includes a first terminal, a second terminal, a surge suppressor, and a current fuse, wherein the surge suppressor and the current fuse are operatively connected between the first terminal and the second terminal and where the monitoring circuit indicates a fault upon sensing a loss of functionality of the surge suppressor or the current fuse. Regardless of the cause of failure (e.g., transient or continuous, or positive or negative overvoltage or excessive current) or the type of system (e.g., DC, single or multi-phase AC), the disclosed invention reliably indicates a neutral-to-ground fault caused by any one monitored component. Whether the failure sensed is a surge suppressor or a current fuse, the monitoring circuit provides one or more alternative current paths to sense particular failures and further provides a failure indication for each detected failure. A light emitting diode (LED) circuit enabled by the monitoring circuit provides a reliable visual indication of a functional and a failed surge suppression circuit.

Integrity monitor for neutral-to-ground suppression circuit

A method and apparatus for mounting heat generating components on a printed circuit board. Components mounted on the printed circuit board that generate heat may alter the properties of the printed circuit board and allow the printed circuit board to conduct current. To stop the flow of current in the printed circuit board, a slot may be used between the mounting points of the component. The slot prevents current from flowing within the printed circuit board.

Method and apparatus for mounting printed circuit board components

A method and apparatus for monitoring the integrity of a voltage regulating device. The voltage regulating device is coupled to a line receiving alternative current power. During normal operation of the voltage regulating device, the method and apparatus includes the use at least one capacitor that is either being charged or discharged on a repetitive basis. The voltage of the capacitor is assessed to determine whether the capacitor is charging or discharging and, thus, whether the voltage regulating device has failed.

Circuit voltage regulator monitor

A common mode signal attenuator includes a magnetic core, and a communications cable having at least one conductor adapted to transmit a communications signal. The communications cable is magnetically coupled to the core to form an inductive element having a magnetic flux path passing through the core. The inductive element has a volt-time capacity of at least about 0.0001 volt-seconds. An electrical transient suppression system includes an electronic device having a ground path, a communications cable, and a magnetic core. The communications cable has at least one conductor adapted to transmit a communications signal and is connected to the electronic device. The communications cable is magnetically coupled to the core to form a common mode signal attenuator having an inductance of about at least 10 times the inductance of the ground path. A method for reducing electrical transients in a communications cable includes magnetically coupling the communications cable to a magnetic core. The communications cable has at least one conductor adapted to transmit a communications signal. The communications cable and magnetic core are coupled to form an inductive element having a magnetic flux path passing through the core. The inductive element has a volt-time capacity of at least 0.0001 volt-seconds.

Common mode signal attenuator

A voltage regulator for regulating a power source that supplies an input signal includes input terminals connected across the power supply, a voltage sensor, a reference generator, a variable load unit, and a control unit. The voltage sensor is connected across the input terminals and receives the input signal and generates a scaled input signal from the input signal that is a fraction of the input signal in magnitude. The reference generator receives the scaled input signal from the voltage sensor and generates a reference signal. The variable load unit is connected across the input terminals. The control unit receives and compares the scaled input signal and the reference signal and instructs the variable load unit to dissipate a first portion of the input signal if the scaled input signal exceeds the reference signal.
