Opal glass compositions and devices incorporating opal glass compositions are described herein. The compositions solve problems associated with the use of opal glasses as light-scattering layers in electroluminescent devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes. In particular, embodiments solve the problem of high light absorption within the opal glass layer as well as the problem of an insufficiently high refractive index that results in poor light collection by the layer. Particular devices comprise light-emitting diodes incorporating light scattering layers formed of high-index opal glasses of high light scattering power that exhibit minimal light attenuation through light absorption within the matrix phases of the glasses.

A protected organic light emitting diode includes an organic light emitting diode structure formed on a substrate, a hermetic barrier layer formed over at least part of the organic light emitting diode structure, and a light extraction layer. The barrier layer may include a glass material such as a tin fluorophosphate glass, a tungsten-doped tin fluorophosphate glass, a chalcogenide glass, a tellurite glass, a borate glass or a phosphate glass. The light extraction layer, which may be formed over the barrier layer, includes a high refractive index matrix material and at least one of scattering particles dispersed throughout the matrix material and a roughened surface.

Light scattering inorganic substrates comprising monolayers and methods for making light scattering inorganic substrates comprising monolayers useful for, for example, photovoltaic cells are described herein. The method comprises providing an inorganic substrate comprising at least one surface, applying an adhesive to the at least one surface of the inorganic substrate, applying inorganic particles to the adhesive to form a coated substrate, and heating the coated substrate to form the light scattering inorganic substrate.

Disclosed in the application are a synthetic silica glass having low fluence-dependent transmission, particularly at about 193 nm, and a process for making the same. The glass may desirably exhibit a low level of fluorescence at 290 and 390 nm when activated at about 248 nm. The glass may desirably exhibit low level of LIWFD, [SiH*] and/or [ODC].

Draw tension can be adjusted to attain the desired draw speed.

A long-period fiber grating includes a fiber having a core surrounded by a cladding, and a plurality of refractive index variations periodically spaced along the longitudinal axis of a portion of the core of the fiber. The fiber is twisted throughout at least a portion of its length that includes the plurality of refractive index variations. By twisting the long-period fiber grating, polarization dependent loss is reduced by as much as 30 percent. Also, the peak wavelength of the light propagating through the long-period fiber grating that is coupled into the cladding of the fiber may be adjusted. The peak wavelength may be adjusted in as little as 0.1 nm increments by twisting the long-period fiber grating after the grating has been written and annealed.

A dynamically tunable filter controls the magnitude of couplings between core and cladding modes of a waveguide by surrounding the waveguide with an overcladding having an adjustable refractive index. The coupled modes are attenuated along the core to produce the desired spectral response. The adjustment to the overcladding index is made in a range that is above the refractive index of the underlying cladding to vary amplitudes of attenuated bands of wavelengths without shifting central wavelengths of the bands.

The present invention is a chromatic dispersion compensator. The chromatic dispersion compensator includes a first 3-port optical circulator, a first grating coupled to the second optical port of the first 3-port optical circulator. A polarization controller is coupled to the third optical port of the first 3-port optical circulator. The chromatic dispersion compensator further includes a second 3-port optical circulator, the polarization controller is coupled to the first optical port of the second 3-port optical circulator and a second grating is coupled to the second optical port of the second 3-port optical circulator.

Compound gain flattening filters of optical amplification include a series of filter components with spectral responses that are combined to approach a target loss spectrum. Small variations in the central wavelengths of the component responses can produce large errors in the combined response of the compound gain flattening filter. However, the components can be divided into sub-components with balanced central wavelength deviations to achieve the desired response goals despite exhibiting otherwise detrimental wavelength deviations.

Packages for long period fiber gratings and other optical components (and methods for forming the packages) are described. According to an aspect of the invention, a hollow tube surrounding an optical fiber containing a long-period grating is collapsed in two areas, forming a seal at each end of the tube. According to another aspect of the invention, a hollow tube with a shelf section at each end surrounds an optical fiber containing a long-period grating. The hollow tube is sealed at each end with a fused frit. According to another aspect of the invention, a hollow tube surrounding an optical fiber containing a long-period grating is sealed at each end with a glass plug.

Methods and apparatusses for packaging long-period fiber gratings

The present invention is directed to a method of enhancing the photosensitivity of an optical waveguide and an optical waveguide having persistent UV photosensitivity following out diffusion of a loading gas such as H,or D,. The optical waveguide is loaded with a gas such as H,or D,to form an associated baseline refractive index. At least a portion of the loaded optical waveguide is exposed to UV radiation to induce a change in the baseline refractive index and the waveguide is annealed to diffuse the gas from the loaded optical waveguide and to stabilize the change in refractive index. Following annealing the optical waveguide retains a UV photosensitivity sufficient to produce significant refractive index changes relative to the induced change in baseline refractive index. The method of the present invention is particularly well suited for designing and fabricating grating devices, tuning grating strength and wavelength, and for providing accurate spatial control of waveguide photosensitivity. Waveguides having complex photosensitivity profiles as a function of length are also disclosed.
