Flame retardant alkenyl aromatic compounds which are vinylbenzyl diaryl phosphine oxides and a method for their preparation are described. They may be polymerized into higher molecular weight flame retardant materials which, in turn, may be admixed with polyphenylene ether resins to form thermoplastic flame resistant molding compositions. The present materials are more resistant to losses in the flame retardancy upon thermal processing, e.g., molding, because the active flame retardant agent, phosphorus, is chemically bound to the polymeric matrix.

Flame retardant blends of an aromatic polycarbonate, preferably a tetraalkylsubstituted aromatic polycarbonate, and a copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a halogenated alkenyl aromatic compound are described. The ultraviolet light resistance and impact strength of articles molded from such compositions is superior to that of moldings prepared from corresponding blends of the polycarbonate, a polystyrene homopolymer and a conventional low molecular weight halogenated flame retardant agent.

A process for the preparation of a graft product of polyphenylene ether and diene rubber from a starting mixture of the two polymers is described. The process can be extended by further polymerizing an alkenyl aromatic compound such as styrene in the presence of the graft product to form a novel terpolymer. The polymers which result from the process are useful as impact resistant modifiers for various engineering thermoplastics, including polyphenylene ether resins.

The impact strength of unsubstituted aromatic polycarbonate resins is improved by inclusion of certain gel materials with the resin before molding. The gel additive can be derived from a rubber modified alkenyl aromatic resin, is in the form of rubbery particles comprised of rubber, rubber grafted alkenyl aromatic resin and occluded alkenyl aromatic resin, and is substantially free of all but trace amounts of soluble alkenyl aromatic homopolymer.
